Marathon runner Sinead Diver challenging stereotypes and breaking barriers

Marathon runner and mother of two Sinead Diver is the eldest member of the Australian Athletics Team for Tokyo 2020 at age 44 - and she's considered a fairly newcomer to the gruelling sport. Melbourne-based Diver shares her unique story from growing up in a small country town in Ireland where sport was not encouraged for girls, to doing her first fun-run to improve her fitness following the birth of her son at age 33. Over the next decade, Diver transitioned from running novice to three-time World Championships representative, and has been selected for her debut Olympic Team at Tokyo 2020. Diver shares how she balances training, work and spending time with her family, how she mentally prepares to run the demanding 42-km race, and her hopes and dreams for her Olympic debut. At the time of recording this episode, Diver and her fellow Athletics Australia marathon teammates were in Queensland preparing to race the Gold Coast Marathon, however, the event was unfortunately cancelled this week due to the progressing COVID-19 situation.

With state-wide lockdowns, no access to a rowing boat, and being away from his teammates during most of 2020 - all while working long hours in the hospital - Booth says it took a new level of resilience and determination to be in contention for selection for a third Games. He relives the highs and lows of his previous two Olympic campaigns at London and Rio, and what it was like to finally be selected for the Tokyo Olympics in Adelaide this week. Alongside his teammates in the men's eight, he shares his hopes and dreams for the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Now, that opportunity is closer than ever with the pitcher landing in Japan last week with the 23-player Aussie Spirit Softball Australia squad. The team were the very first international athletes from any country or sport to arrive in Japan ahead of this year's Tokyo Olympic Games, and their arrival was met with a flurry of international media attention as the team created history in Ota City. Smethurst shares what this experience has been like, and what the team's day-to-day life looks like in their unique bubble environment in Japan. She relives her Olympic debut as the youngest member of the Softball Team that won bronze in 2008, and what she's been up to since then. She shares the significance of her sport returning to the Olympic programme in 2021, and her hopes and dreams for a second Games appearance in Tokyo.
