The Golden Knights dropped their fourth straight home game Thursday night, falling to the Toronto Maple Leafs, 7-3. Toronto raced out to a 4-0 first period lead and chased starting VGK goalie Adin Hill. Bruce Cassidy said afterward that the team was soft on pucks and made several mistakes leading to Maple Leafs goals. Cassidy expects veterans and younger players to step up in the absence of Mark Stone, who suffered a spleen injury against nashville this week. Appearing on the Sick Podcast Wednesday, GM Kelly McCrimmon said Mark Stone will be out for a while after a vicious collision with the Predators Yakov Trenin Tuesday night. McCrimmon said Stone would be evaluated but he won't be returning anytime soon. Stone had 53 points on the season so far. McCrimmon did say that Jack Eichel and William Carrier will be back soon. He said five players from the AHL Silver Knights will be on the road for the five-game trip following tonight's game against the hot Maple Leafs. Logan Thompson returned to net Monday after a 3 week period of inactivity. He posted a shutout over the hapless San Jose Sharks 4-0. Thompson missed at least one start during that period due to illness, but he came back sharp. VGK had an early Michael Amadio goal and coasted to victory to break a two-game losing streak. The Golden Knights also didn't give up any third period goals for the first time in three games. The Golden Knights also saw Mason Morelli score a goal in his first NHL game. VGK returns to home ice this evening against the Nashville Predators who are just two points out of a wild card spot. The Golden Knights third period woes continued for a second game as VGK fell to the Hurricanes 3-1 Saturday night. VGK allowed two Carolina goals in the third period. They have dropped two games in a row, after winning twice after the All-Star Break. Jonathan Marchessault, again, scored the lone VGK goal. The Marchessault line with Barbeshev and Roy has now scored in 11 straight games. VGK gave up a shorthanded goal in a 1 on 3 in the game. We said Friday that special teams would probably determine the outcome. VGK plays a President's Day matinee in San Jose at 1pm. Despite being in last place, the Sharks are 1-2 after the break and have lost twice by one goal. Tomas Hertl and Logan Couture are both out of the lineup for the Sharks due to injuries. The Golden Knights hurt themselves by not protecting the puck in last night's 5-3 loss to the Minnesota Wild. VGK let up two goals in a span of 1:01 to Marco Rossi and Matt Boldy in the third period, which put Minnesota up for good.
