Renewal is not about becoming new people as much as remembering who we already are in Christ.

What Does “Conform to the Patterns of This World” Mean?
Ephesians 4 mentions some of the patterns of this world: In vs. 22 on down
You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires.
What do the Patterns of this world look like for you today??
Busyness = that somehow how busy your calendar is defines your worth and value
PERSONAL COMFORT-That somehow your personal comfort matters more than your character
IMPULSIVE REACTIONS-That its ok to just impulsively react rather than intentionally and thoughtfully respond
IDENTITY-Who you are is what you do
SELF SUFFICIENCY-That its weakness to surrender and be dependent on God. You somehow have to muscle up and do it all yourself.
STRIVING FOR MORE- rather being content with what we’ve been given.
Key Truth: The truth is most families don’t consciously choose worldliness—they slowly absorb it. We become kind of like a chameleon based on what or who we’re around.

Are We Being Punished By The Storms?
Background - As we have tuned into the news over the past week, we have seen incredible tragedy from the storms and flooding across Texas, New Mexico, and up the eastern part of the country. In the meantime, we hear about the growing wildfires sweeping across California and the Northwest. These days, it seems like no one is safe or spared from the storms. I’ve heard all kinds of reasons and thoughts behind these events. “God is punishing us”, “Climate change is real”, “We get what we deserve”, the list of explanations goes on as we try to use ideas of faith, science, and whatever else we can insert into the picture to help us reason through the storms we face. During today’s show, we are not going to attempt to explain why these storms occur. We are not going to point fingers at who is doing things right and who is possibly doing things wrong. What we are going to do is discuss what God wants from us and what we can do to work through the storms of life. 1. Storms are Inevitable, Not Always a Consequence of Sin: If your neighborhood was hit by a tornado you might take that personally and think it was something about your sin that caused the tornado.
It’s a common misconception that storms or hardships are always a direct result of personal sin.
Jesus Himself stated, "In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world" (John 16:33). Troubles are a given, even for believers. How about Job? He endured immense suffering despite being described as "blameless and upright" (Job 1:1).
2. Storms Can Be a Means of Growth and Refinement: Just as a refiner's fire purifies gold, storms can purify our faith and character. Difficulties often expose areas where we need to grow, deepen our dependence on God, and develop perseverance. James 1:2-4 encourages us with this perspective: "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." The storms, therefore, are not meant to break us, but to build us up.
3. Storms Can Be a Testimony to God's Power: When we navigate storms with faith and integrity, our lives can become a powerful testimony to God's faithfulness and strength. Others observe how we respond to adversity and can be drawn to the God who sustains us.

Difference Between Prayer and Meditation
Prayer is generally understood as communicating with God. It's a two-way conversation, where you speak to God (through requests, thanks, confessions, adoration) and also listen for His response. Prayer is often outwardly focused, expressing thoughts, feelings, and desires to a divine being. It can be spontaneous, structured, vocal, or silent.
Meditation, in a broader sense, is about focused attention and internal observation. While its specific practices vary widely across cultures and spiritual traditions, the common thread is to quiet the mind, increase awareness, and gain clarity. Some forms of meditation aim to empty the mind, while others focus on a particular thought, image, or sensation.

Does the Christian Faith Support Meditation or Should We Stick with Prayer Only?
The Christian faith absolutely supports a form of meditation, but it's distinct from many secular or Eastern meditative practices. Christians are encouraged to engage in "Christian meditation" which is fundamentally different from practices that aim to empty the mind or detach from the self.
Here's how Christian meditation differs and why it's supported:
Filling the Mind, Not Emptying It: Unlike some Eastern meditation forms that aim to empty the mind, Christian meditation is about filling the mind with thoughts of God, His Word (the Bible), and His character. It involves deep reflection, contemplation, and rumination on biblical passages, God's attributes, and His works.
The saying "If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything" means that if you lack core principles or values, you're more susceptible to believing or accepting anything that comes your way.
The question might be, “What are you going to fill your mind with?” This is when we must be intentional with our meditation. Simply emptying ourselves only creates a void to be filled with something else. The world will have no problem giving you things to put in that void. You must choose to put the good and God in that emptiness.
Focus on God, Not Self: The purpose of Christian meditation is to deepen one's relationship with God, to understand His will, and to be transformed into Christ's likeness. It's not primarily for self-improvement or personal serenity in isolation from God, though these can be beneficial byproducts.
Biblical Basis: The Bible itself encourages meditation. Numerous Psalms speak of meditating on God's law day and night (e.g., Psalm 1:2, Psalm 119:15, 77:12). Philippians 4:8 exhorts believers to "meditate on these things" – referring to whatever is true, noble, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, or praiseworthy.

Integration with Prayer: Christian meditation often complements prayer. Through meditation on Scripture, one gains understanding and insight that can inform and enrich their prayers. It can be seen as a way of listening to God speak through His Word, preparing the heart for more intentional communication (prayer).
