In Case You Missed It: Conversations with Grammy Nominees Jason Isbell and Allison Russell.
2024/02/13
While host Paul Myers is away, we're looking back at two different interviews from 2023 featuring artists who were nominated for Grammy Awards this year. One of them, Jason Isbell, was also in Martin Scorsese's Academy Award nominated film, Killers Of The Flower Moon, and was 2023's RSD Ambassador along with his partner, and friend of the show, Amanda Shires. Jason and the 400 Unit delivered the Grammy nominated album Weathervanes, which we discuss in this interview. And we're also running an interview with Allison Russell, who caught the Recording Academy's ear for her triumphant 2023 album, The Returner. The Record Store Day Podcast is written, produced, engineered, and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme and selected interstitial music. Sponsored by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, Tito's Handmade Vodka, RSDMRKT.com, and Furnace Record Pressing (the official pressing plant of RSD.) Thanks to RSD co-founders Carrie Colliton and Michael Kurtz.

Remembering The Shangri-Las' Mary Weiss with filmmaker Allison Anders.
2024/01/30
When Paul invited the filmmaker Allison Anders (Gas Food Lodging, Mi Vida Loca, Grace Of My Heart) to remember the late great Shangri-Las lead singer Mary Weiss (who passed away on January 19th at the age of 75) we thought it was only going to be a 15-minute segment. In hindsight, this was always going to be the full hour. Enjoy! And Record Store Day co-founder Carrie Colliton alerts us to some important RSD announcements coming up at RecordStoreDay.com, and remarks on the passing of Melanie Safka who passed away on January 23rd at the age of 76). The Record Store Day Podcast is written, produced, engineered, and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme and selected interstitial music. Sponsored by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, Tito's Handmade Vodka, RSDMRKT.com, and Furnace Record Pressing (the official pressing plant of RSD) Thanks to RSD co-founder Michael Kurtz.

Legendary L.A. session group, The Immediate Family.
2024/01/02
Happy New Year from The Record Store Day Podcast. We ring in 2024 with a 40-minute special episode featuring legendary Southern California session players, Danny "Kootch" Kortchmar, Waddy Wachtel, Leland Sklar, Russ Kunkel, and Steve Postell, also known as The Immediate Family, which just happens to be the title of a new documentary by Denny Tedesco (The Wrecking Crew). And through the sporadically shaky miracle of Zoom, we had all six of these guys converge to talk about their collective brotherhood, the great artists they've worked with, the new documentary, and their own upcoming album, Skin In The Game. For the latest in Record Store Day news, go to RecordStoreDay.com. Holiday Music Book Episode 2023
2023/12/05
At the holidays, the best kind of "Wrapped" is physical media (records, CDs, and even music books) nicely wrapped and placed under the tree. From time to time we do episodes about music books that celebrate the art of record making, and on this one we speak with author Ben Greenman who worked with the legendary Sly Stone, to give us the memoir Thank You (Faletinme Be Mice Elf Agin) out now from AUWA Books, with a foreword by the publisher, Questlove himself. We also spoke with Slate's Chris Molanphy about his extensive study of the historically significant Lil Nas X hit, "Old Town Road," in his book Old Town Road, out now from Duke University Press. And Bay Area journalist Joel Selvin speaks on behalf of his late co-author, Arhoolie Records founder and mainstay Chris Strachwitz, about their new book Down Home Music, featuring Strachwitz's photographs from travels in the American rural south to curate the music that inspired a generation.  And RSD's Carrie Colliton explains the new RSD MRKT initiative and even recommends a few books of her own. For more information go to RSDMRK.com, and RecordStoreDay.com Also sponsored by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, and Tito's Handmade Vodka. The RSD Podcast is written, produced, engineered and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music.
