Nick Fowler and the PCT Self Supported Fastest Known Time
2023/09/29
In this episode, I had the pleasure of catching up with Nick Fowler for the third time. Now, you might remember Nick as the guy who conquered the Self-Supported Fastest Known Time (FKT) on the Pacific Northwest Trail and the Ozark Trail in our previous chats. Back then, he was dealing with some pesky ankle injuries but was determinedly preparing for a shot at the Self-Supported FKT on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). It's been a fantastic journey following Nick's evolution as a runner, hiker, and all-around person. And guess what? Nick not only took on the PCT challenge but crushed it in a jaw-dropping 52 days, 9 hours, and 18 minutes! We dive deep into his experiences, lessons learned, and how he's grown. His journey has it all….including blood, sweat, and tears! So, if you're up for some inspiring stories and a good dose of ultrarunning enthusiasm, you're in for a treat. Nick's journey is a testament to dedication and pushing boundaries, and it's always a blast chatting with him! Show notes: http://www.theriot.run/nickfowler3

Kayla Straub - The Beast of Kansas
2023/09/15
In this episode of the Run the Riot Podcast, I had an amazing chat with Kayla Straub, the beast of Kansas!. Kayla's journey into running is pretty incredible. She didn't start long ago, but when she did, she dove in headfirst. Her first ultramarathon was the extremely hot and exposed Honey Badger 100 in June 2020. She snagged second place right out of the gate! But that's just the beginning of her story. In 2021, she went back to the Honey Badger 100 and came out as the champion. Talk about determination, right? And then, in 2022, she set the Kansas state female record at the Prairie Spirit 100. She's overcome some seriously tough personal challenges before she even laced up her running shoes. Her story is not just about running; it's about resilience and grit in the face of adversity. And she's not stopping there. Kayla has some big goals for her future races, and she thrives on challenges. It's not just about the medals; it's about pushing her own limits and proving that anything is possible. But Kayla's life isn't all about running. She lives on a farm with her kids, juggling the demands of parenthood with her passion for running. Kayla is demonstrating what can happen when you embrace your dreams and overcome life's hurdles. So, be sure to listen in and get inspired by Kayla Straub's incredible story! Show notes: http://www.theriot.run/kaylastraub

Wesley Hunt - Embracing the Pain
2023/08/05
If you run trails around Arkansas, you probably know who Wesley Hunt is.  Wesley is a beast of a runner and an all-around great guy.  He’s run Arkansas Traveller 100 five times and won it 4 of those times - placing 2nd on his first outing.  Earlier this year, he won the LOViT 100 and plans to return to Traveller this year after a 5-year break.   I love his outlook on embracing the emotions that come out during a race.  We get into the mental aspect of running Ultras, competition, and training for longevity in the sport.  We also chat about his experience with Arkansas Traveller 100, Western States 100, LOViT 100, Leadville 100 and others.  You’ll definitely enjoy the many nuggets of wisdom he drops in casual conversation! EP138 - Catching up with Bryan Gillette
2023/06/23
Bryan Gillette started doing epic things at an early age. At 20 years old, he rode his bike across the US. Then he got into ultrarunning and after running other distances, completed the Tahoe 200.   He took his experience on the trail and then interviewed 100 leaders (CEOs, CXOs, CIOs, CHROs, CFOs, founders, and ultra-distance athletes) to see how they take really big ideas across the finish line. He then penned the book, EPIC Performance. It was great to visit with Bryan again after reading his book EPIC Performance. We not only talked about his book, but we caught up on the latest big things he and his family have done and have planned! Show notes: http://www.theriot.run/bryang2
