Description

Hi Pod! I’m Dad is where I talk through fatherhood while raising a son with autism who does not speak. I’m James Guttman, the dad behind Hi Blog! I’m Dad. This podcast isn’t about tips or solutions. It is about what life actually feels like when autism is part of your home every day, and you are trying to be present for it without pretending it is easier than it is. Some episodes are about joy and connection. Others are about exhaustion, fear, patience, and the quiet moments that never make it into awareness campaigns. Everything you hear here comes from real mornings, real mistakes, and a deep love for my kids. There is no takeaway. Just one dad saying the things he usually keeps to himself.

What My Nonverbal Son Taught Me About Trust at 4 AM
2026/01/30
This week, I’m talking about trust. Not just the trust we work to earn from our nonverbal kids, but the trust they place in us every day, often without us realizing it. It starts in the middle of the night, when my 14-year-old son Lucas wakes me up the way he always does. What I walked into wasn’t the part that stayed with me. What stayed with me was how easily he trusted me when I told him what to do, even when he didn’t fully understand why. In this episode, I reflect on the responsibility that comes with being someone your child trusts unconditionally, and why autism appreciation means acknowledging both the weight and the beauty of that role. This isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about showing up. It's Here! Trust Goes Both Ways When You’re Raising a Nonverbal Child
2026/01/23
This week’s episode builds on Monday’s blog about talking to my nonverbal son even when I didn’t know it mattered. I reflect on trust, not just the trust my son has in me, but the trust I’ve learned to have in him. When Lucas was little, I assumed most of what I said wasn’t landing. He had significant delays, no words, and very little visible response. It would have been easy to stop talking. Instead, I kept going. I share how bedtime was the first concept Lucas ever truly understood and how something as simple as him running and hiding changed the way I viewed his comprehension entirely. Not because he followed instructions, but because he understood meaning. This episode isn’t about drills, milestones, or breakthroughs. It’s about repetition, familiarity, tone, and learning to trust that understanding can form quietly over time. It’s about believing that a child is always trying — even when you can’t see the results yet. It's Here! I Forgot That Not Everyone Knows What This Life Is Really Like
2026/01/16
Some mornings don’t announce themselves. You wake up tired, have a cup of coffee, do the same things you always do, and then suddenly you realize that the years you spent believing you could teach your son everything might not be enough. In this episode, I talk honestly about what it feels like to raise a 14-year-old boy with autism while carrying a deep love for who he is and a growing fear about what I may never be able to give him. I share why I avoid labels, why I protect my son’s privacy, and how lonely it can feel when the people around you simply cannot understand the realities you live with every day. This is not about despair. It is about the quiet grief that lives inside love. It is about the guilt that shows up when progress stalls. It is about the relief of finally saying the unspeakable to someone who already knows. There is no tidy ending here. Just the truth of being a father who adores his son and sometimes forgets that not everyone else knows what this life is really like. It's Here! I Thought I Was Helping. I Wasn’t Listening.
2026/01/09
I used to think being helpful meant being loud. That if I could just explain things clearly enough, I could turn frustration into understanding. But I wasn’t helping. I was trying to rescue myself from the discomfort of not being understood. In this episode, I talk about how that instinct followed me into parenting, how it nearly cost me the connection I was trying to protect, and how my son Lucas taught me that trust doesn’t come from clarity. It comes from staying. This isn’t about techniques or fixes. It’s about presence. It’s about learning when to put things down, stop performing understanding, and actually listen. It's Here! When My Non-Verbal Son Finally Knew I Was Listening
2026/01/02
In this episode, James Guttman reflects on the quiet shift that followed his decision to adapt communication for his non-verbal son, Lucas. What began as a practical change soon became something far deeper. As Lucas realized that his father truly understood him, everyday moments stopped feeling like emergencies. Instead of panicking, he began checking in. Instead of fighting for attention, he started trusting that his needs would be met. Rather than focusing on techniques or behavior strategies, this conversation explores how trust transforms a child’s entire world and why the real breakthrough wasn’t communication, but connection. Why I Stopped Forcing My Nonverbal Son to Communicate “The Right Way”
2025/12/26
In this episode, James talks about something he hasn’t addressed before: what happens when the communication tools everyone recommends simply don’t work for your child. When James’s nonverbal son, Lucas, couldn’t physically use American Sign Language due to dexterity challenges, it felt like yet another failure in a long list of “solutions” that sounded good on paper but didn’t work in real life. Instead of forcing Lucas to fit a system that wasn’t built for him, James made a different choice. They changed the system. This episode explores how gesture-based communication evolved in their home, why being understood matters more than doing things “the right way,” and how connection, safety, and dignity often come before progress charts and programs. If you’ve ever worried you were doing it wrong, this conversation is for you. It's Here! Holiday Respect for My Nonverbal Son: Trust and Autism Appreciation
2025/12/19
Hi Pod, it's James Guttman. As the holidays approach, I talk about what respect really looks like when you’re raising a nonverbal child with autism. My son doesn’t care about Christmas traditions, gift-opening, or big holiday moments, so instead of forcing him into them, I’ve learned to build the season around who he actually is. In this episode, I share how trust became the foundation of our relationship, from a moment after my heart surgery that changed how I parent forever to the everyday choices that make holidays calmer and more meaningful for him. I explain why I follow my son’s lead instead of correcting him, why consistency matters more than control, and how keeping my word has shaped his behavior in public and at home. I also talk candidly about single fatherhood, rejecting the “helpless dad” stereotype, protecting peace after major life changes, and what it means to invite someone into a life that already works. This episode is about autism appreciation, setting boundaries with kindness, and choosing respect over performance, especially during the holidays. If you’re a parent of a child with autism, a single parent, or someone looking to make the holidays gentler and more authentic, this conversation is for you. It's Here! Thirteen Years, One Scar: Learning To Care For My Heart
2025/12/12
What started as a walk to urgent care ended with the words, ‘you’re having a heart attack,’ and a truth I never saw coming. An angiogram gone silent, and five blocked arteries that shouldn’t have let me stand. Then the doctor’s words about my eventual fate - “that was going to be you” - became the line that split my life in two. That surgery didn’t just save me. It became the compass I’ve followed ever since. In this episode, I talk about what changed after that day: eating with intention, moving with purpose, and communicating without yelling, gaslighting, or going to emotional war. That shift carried into fatherhood too. I stopped worrying about who my son might become and started appreciating the boy right in front of me. There’s also the peace part and the ongoing lessons that continue to this day. The boundaries I drew, the twisted people I sent to the “cornfield,” and the stress I finally stopped confusing with responsibility. This is a conversation about survival, yes, but more than that, it’s about design. How you design your days, your circle, and your energy when you realize you don’t get unlimited minutes. It's Here! 2025/12/05

We dig into myths around RPM, the “you don’t look autistic” trope, and why dignity beats spectacle every time. • why the format shift matters and keeping it ad-free • curiosity vs offense when asking about autism • why “you don’t look autistic” misses the point • RPM’s (Rapid Prompting Method) place, limits, and consent • the barbecue incident and speaking for someone • pushing back on “nonverbal understands everything” • rejecting telepathy myths and miracle promises • dignity over content and never filming meltdowns • parents as experts on their own children • how we’ll handle topics and questions going forward Check it out, HiBlogImDad.com every Monday, every Wednesday Every Friday, new HiPodImDad.com It's Here! No Words Needed: Podcasting With My Non-Verbal Son
2025/08/29
This week’s co-host doesn’t say a word, but his presence says everything.  James sits down with his son Lucas, a non-verbal teenager with autism, for a special episode. With the help of Pirate Booty, duck noises, and an AAC device, Lucas shows listeners what communication looks like when it’s completely authentic. Whether it’s asking for water or no-selling a dad joke, nothing Lucas does is performative and that honesty has become one of James’s greatest parenting lessons. You’ll hear about real moments: a silly game that’s only funny when Lucas says it is, how years of practice lead to a single successful request on a talker, and the deep frustration of strangers assuming they know your child better than you do. This is more than a podcast episode, it’s a window into trust, growth, and fatherhood that doesn't need subtitles. My Nonverbal Son With Autism Is Everything He Needs to Be
2025/08/22
In this episode, James Guttman explores how his nonverbal son with autism, Lucas, redefined the very idea of perfection. It’s not about milestones, math scores, or sports trophies. It’s about honesty, love, and authenticity. Lucas doesn’t hide his intentions. He doesn’t play emotional games. And while life with severe autism comes with real challenges, James shares how those challenges are matched by something even more powerful: a son who is, in every meaningful way, perfect. If you’ve ever felt like the world’s definition of “normal” doesn’t fit your life, this is the episode for you. Watch The Video From This Show: https://youtu.be/CxM41UtGOMs It's Here! Life After Heart Surgery: From Near-Death to Autism Appreciation
2025/08/08
At 35 years old, James Gutman was given just four hours’ notice before undergoing a quintuple bypass with no prior health issues, no medications, and no warning signs. But that life-saving operation wasn’t the end of his story. It was the beginning of a new one. In this powerful episode of Hi Pod! I’m Dad, James shares how surviving heart surgery changed everything: how he viewed stress, how he approached parenting, and how he discovered a deeper connection with his nonverbal son Lucas through what he now calls “autism appreciation.” Lucas became an emotional mirror, reflecting James’s calm or stress back at him, and their bond grew stronger when James stopped trying to control everything and instead entered his son’s world. From heart health to emotional growth, this episode is a raw, inspiring look at what happens when life delivers challenges that turn into unexpected gifts. When Haircuts Hurt: A Father’s Autism Parenting Breakthrough
2025/08/01
Every parent has their share of parenting challenges, but when your child has severe, non-verbal autism, even something as ordinary as a haircut can become a years-long emotional battle. In this week’s episode of Hi Pod! I’m Dad, James Guttman shares the raw and personal story of how a supposedly “autism-friendly” salon failed his son Lucas and how that painful moment led him down a years-long journey of cutting his son’s hair himself. From heartbreaking meltdowns to trying every trick in the book (and on Amazon), James reflects on what it truly means to parent through difficulty and how progress often looks nothing like what we expect. The solution? Not special clippers or a miracle strategy, but growth, both his son’s and his own. This episode is a powerful reminder that yesterday’s impossible struggles can become tomorrow’s triumphs. ▶️ Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/ErslqmGlIC8  📺 Subscribe: https://youtube.com/@hiblogimdad 📝 New blog posts every Monday & Wednesday at HiBlogImDad.com 📱 Follow @HiJamesGutman on Instagram, TikTok, Threads & Facebook It's Here!
