Comedian Jay Black left his job as a high school English teacher ten years ago to embark on a career as a stand-up comic. In that time, he's achieved an incredible amount of success. On the stage, Jay has headlined clubs across the nation, from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas to the Tropicana in Atlantic City and just about every comedy club in between. He also toured extensively in Europe as the host of the US Army's "I Am Strong" tour. He's met with equal success on the college market, performing at nearly 1,000 schools across the country, winning the "College Performer of the Year" award once and the "College Comedian of the Year" award three times. For the last ten years, Jay has done a weekly spot on WIP Radio, discussing television, pop culture, and sports. In 2009, Jay started writing screenplays with his lifelong friend, Brian Herzlinger, producing a string of successful projects from 2012's "Paulie" with Paul Sorvino, 2014's "Meet My Valentine" with Scott Wolf, 2016's "Love Always Santa" with Margueritte Morea, and the upcoming "Orchard" with Tiffani Thiessan. Why YouTube and Substack? There's more news being posted on the internet than ever before. But a lot of it isn't actually reporting. There's nothing inherently wrong with commentary, but somebody still has to do the expensive part: get on a plane, go to the place, find the people who actually know what happened, hire good local producers, ask difficult questions, check the answers and come back with something we didn't already know. Increasingly, the news business is having trouble paying for that kind of work. That's why I've launched my own YouTube channel and Substack. I want to see if I can use the same internet economy that has disrupted traditional news to help finance actual reporting. The idea is pretty straightforward: if you can support my work through a subscription on Substack, I'll put that money back into the journalism—travel, local producers, camera crews, investigations and documentaries. I don't want to sit at home and tell you what I think about whatever everyone is arguing about that day. I want to go places, talk to people, find things out and show you what I found. The internet itself isn't the problem. In fact, it's a big part of how my reporting first reached a large audience. The problem is that we've built an online news economy where it can be easier to make money talking about other people's reporting than paying for the reporting itself. I'd like to see if we can flip that around. YouTube is where I'll publish my video reporting—dispatches, investigations, documentaries and stories from the field. Substack is where I'll write directly to readers, share what I'm working on and take you behind the scenes of how the reporting gets done. Some stories will be quick. Others may take months. But the basic idea is the same: don't just post about the story. Go there. Consistent in this work is a passion for writing and a belief in the transformative power of story. As a writer and journalist -- from the U.S. and Europe -- his writing on international and urban affairs, politics, economics, education, art and culture has been published by The New Yorker, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The New Republic, Smithsonian, The Chicago Tribune, The Wall Street Journal, Parade Magazine, National Geographic, The Economist Intelligence Unit and dozens of other print and online outlets. He's been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, selected Journalist of the Year in Virginia, and honored with a magazine writing award by the American Society of Journalists and Authors. He is the author of the narrative book, The Gunman and His Mother: Lee Harvey Oswald, Marguerite Oswald and The Making of an Assassin, a bestselling Amazon Kindle Single and newly updated and published by Open Road Media. He is also the co-author of Adrift: Charting Our Course Back to a Great Nation (Prometheus Books), a featured guest on MSNBC, Fox Business and NPR, and he writes and publishes America, America, a popular Substack newsletter focused on politics and society, democracy and justice. Beschloss is also an adjunct professor at New York University's Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. He was previously a professor of practice at Arizona State University, where he founded and directed the Narrative Storytelling Initiative and worked at the College of Global Futures and the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. At ASU, he also led narrative development, serving under the president's office. In addition to his work as a journalist, writing and editing for magazines and newspapers, Beschloss has taken on various roles as a scriptwriter, producer and director for film and television. His projects have included documentary and fiction films for European television, such as The Miracle, shot in Saint Petersburg, Russia, for the French-German ARTE channel and first screened at the Pompidou Centre in Paris. In 2003, he co-wrote and co-produced Paris, a noir thriller shot in Los Angeles and Las Vegas that premiered in competition at the Tribeca Film Festival, was acquired by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, sold to more than 20 countries, and aired for nearly two years on the Showtime movie channels. A Chicago native and married father of two daughters, Beschloss has lived and worked in New York, London, Helsinki, Moscow and Los Angeles. He is a graduate of Haverford College, earned his master's degree at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, and spent a year studying economic history in the graduate school of the London School of Economics. He currently resides in New York.
