It’s officially spooky season, and we are kicking things off with a story that has just about everything: a whirlwind romance, a handsome doctor, a picture-perfect family, funeral homes, stolen body parts and a whole lot of things happening to dead people that absolutely should not have been happening. When Barbra Reifel met Michael Mastromarino at a Manhattan tanning salon, the connection was instant. Within two years, they were married, raising two little boys and living what looked like a fairy-tale life. But behind the successful doctor, beautiful home and seemingly perfect marriage was a secret life Barbra could never have imagined. Grab your favorite drink, and hold on for one wicked story!  References: https://nymag.com/news/features/22326/https://www.nj.com/news/2013/07/michael_mastromarino_nj_mastermind_of_body-parts_theft_ring_dies_of_cancer.htmlhttps://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2013/07/09/200481947/mastermind-of-body-stealing-scheme-dieshttps://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC2443573/https://www.brownstonelaw.com/blog/michael-mastromarino-bone-snatcher/https://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/09/nyregion/michael-mastromarino-dentist-guilty-in-organ-scheme-dies-at-49.htmlhttps://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/1qbkkba/til_michael_mastromarino_aka_the_bone_snatcher/https://www.momsandmysteries.com/blog/the-dentist-who-stole-1000-bodieshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biomedical_Tissue_Serviceshttps://www.brownstonelaw.com/blog/category/michael-mastromarino/, https://abc7ny.com/archive/6359492/https://www.cbsnews.com/news/michael-mastromarino-aka-the-brooklyn-bone-snatcher-dies-from-bone-cancer-report-says/https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna25414798https://www.facebook.com/InvestigationDiscovery/videos/love-honor-betray-on-id-and-discovery/971675857026835/https://www.icij.org/investigations/tissue/from-the-archives-how-body-brokers-profited-from-stolen-human-tissue/https://www.dentistryiq.com/practice-management/overhead-and-profitability/article/16354576/michael-mastromarino-a-former-dentist-who-illegally-sold-body-parts-to-make-millions-diedhttps://news.sky.com/story/bodysnatch-leader-michael-mastromarino-dies-10440724https://www.upi.com/topic/Michael_Mastromarino/https://www.theguardian.com/world/2008/jun/28/internationalcrime.usa, https://abc7.com/archive/6027459/https://www.nydailynews.com/2013/07/07/bone-snatcher-michael-mastromarino-dies-of-bone-cancer-as-victims-see-sad-irony/https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/obituaries/2013/07/10/michael-mastromarino-dentist-guilty-organ-scheme-dies/414qkgj8ZeSrl1mGZQMKYN/story.htmlhttps://6abc.com/archive/6232624/https://www.smh.com.au/national/addict-former-oral-surgeon-modernised-bodysnatching-20130710-2pqj0.htmlhttps://www.gregmonforton.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/20/assets/files/PDFs/stolen-body-parts.pdfhttps://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/shadow-boxing/201307/death-of-a-body-snatcherhttps://www.theguardian.com/world/2008/mar/20/usahttps://www.cnn.com/2010/LIVING/personal/01/21/o.husbands.secret.lives/https://www.cnn.com/videos/crime/2012/11/20/exp-ng-mastromarino-ex-wife.hlnhttps://tv.apple.com/us/episode/the-corpses-bride/umc.cmc.5svo3tannjr404tr3ikks3yrx?showId=umc.cmc.7czr84lr069csjhqhrxauygz2https://clevnet.overdrive.com/media/4997074https://www.sportskeeda.com/us/shows/who-barbra-mastromarino-do-details-explored-ahead-knife-heart-investigation-discoveryhttps://starcasm.net/love-honor-betray-barbara-mastromarino-found-out-her-husband-was-stealing-body-parts/https://thecinemaholic.com/where-are-michael-mastromarinos-wife-and-kids-now/Please like, follow, and share this podcast - we're on all of the platforms! **CONTENT WARNING**  This episode includes discussion of domestic violence, coercive control, stalking, sexual abuse allegations, mental health, and suicide. Please take care while listening.  When Mica Francis Miller died by suicide in April 2024, questions surrounding her marriage to pastor John-Paul Miller quickly captured national attention. But Mica’s story is about much more than the circumstances of her death. Kat and Ashley are joined by Bay Area Turning Point’s Melissa Prentice to examine Mica’s documented attempts to seek help, the allegations of stalking, surveillance, financial and spiritual abuse, and the pattern known as coercive control. They also look at the fight for Mica’s Law and ask whether our current domestic violence laws recognize abuse before it turns deadly.  References: COERCED: The Devotion & Death of Mica Francis Miller / LunaShark MediaLunaShark Media: Mica Miller TimelineMica’s List / Mica’s Law, Regina B. In this week’s episode, Ashley highlights the women whose groundbreaking work changed the way we understand victims, criminals, and forensic evidence. At the center of the episode is Ann Burgess, the forensic nurse whose research on rape trauma and violent offenders helped shape modern criminal profiling and transform the FBI’s approach to investigating serial killers. Ashley also explores the contributions of other trailblazing women in forensic science, including the creators and innovators behind the rape kit, homicide investigation training tools, advanced DNA profiling, forensic anthropology, hand-vein identification, and more. Their work helped bring science, structure, and compassion into criminal investigations, giving victims a stronger voice and investigators better tools to pursue justice.
