Do Self Help Books Really Help? With Kristen Meinzer and Jolenta Greenberg
2024/02/26
This week Kat is joined by not one but two guests, Jolenta Greenberg and Kristen Meinzer. Jolenta and Kristen both consider themselves advice critics. They spent years living by and critiquing advice from self-help books for their podcast By The Book and now they’re ready to discuss wellness-related questions and help debunk all the self-help myths and promises in their new podcast, How To Be Fine which premiered on February 23rd. In this episode, Kat, Jolenta, & Kristen talk about their experiences- what they thought was all BS, what they learned, what worked, and what was just weird.

The Difference Between: Therapy + TV Therapy And Why No Isn't Always a Complete Sentence
2024/02/19
This week, Tara Booker is back for another installment of “The Difference Between,” a series where we break down the difference between a mental health related topic and how it shows up in pop culture. This week we rolled it back to the basics and talked about what therapy really is versuses how some popular tv shows portray it. Spoiler: It isn’t just us nodding our heads and asking you how you feel and it also isn’t us telling you what to do!
Then we breakdown why sometimes “No” is a complete sentence and why sometimes its helpful to offer more information when setting a boundary. It all goes back to the grey nuanced reality of what relationships really are- and there isn’t a right way that works all of the time!

It's Giving Unethical: When Influencers Go Too Far, with Caroline Shermer MS, RDN, CEDS
2024/02/12
The conversation that has been living rent free in Kat's head for months is now here. And she is THRILLED to have Registered Dietitian AND Certified Eating Disorder Specialist, Caroline Shermer, here to process it all with her. In this episode Kat and Caroline talk about their frustration felt while watching vulnerable populations who are desperate for help be taken advantage of by creative social media marketing tactics. You'll also hear about the latest buzzwords that are being co-opted by influencers (hello gut microbiome) to catch your attention and sell you anything and everything you don't need. Lastly, they discuss how they individually have learned to maintain their own moral and ethical guidelines while engaging in social media in their respective businesses.
More about Caroline: Caroline provides nutrition counseling empowering her clients to discover all they are meant to be and meant to eat apart from their eating disorder. She sees clients virtually nationwide and in person in Nashville TN at her private practice, Meant To Eat Nutrition Counseling. You can find her on meanttoeat.com and @meanttoeat on Instagram!

Maybe She's Born with It — Maybe It's a Result of Her Little T Trauma
2024/02/05
This week Kat is diving into the type of trauma that tends to get lost, ignored, and easily overlooked. There is a kind of trauma often labeled as "little t" that doesn't look like the typical large scale events you can easily pin point. When this type of trauma is experienced, usually, you'll be able to see the effects of the experience before you recognize the significance. Which is why so many people walk into therapy for the first time looking for relief from a symptom but assuming the problem is them— not something they went through. Listen this week to gain a better understanding of what types of things CAN be traumatic for individuals. Our hope is having a broader idea of the things that can alter the way we respond to the world, can offer both empathy and compassion for our struggles AND opportunities for healing.

2024/01/24
Couch Talks is the bonus episode of You Need Therapy that comes out every Wednesday where Kat answers questions that listeners send to [email protected]. This week Kat reads a listener e-mail responding to a recent episode about culture norms around women and marriage. This episode serves as a reminder that we all can experience life in our own unique way without needing to invalidate someone else's beliefs, experiences, or choices. The Comfort of Getting "Old"
2024/01/22
This week, Kat is talking about something that she has become more acutely aware of in the recent years-- her age. The process of growing up and "getting old" can be a weird one- and feel like a sudden one. In this episode, Kat takes listeners through the journey she has found herself on as she realizes that millennials are no longer the future and also no longer the problem child of a generation. We hope this conversation can serve as a fun and interesting listen that maybe doesn't teach you anything new but validates something you might be going through as well. After all, things just tend to feel better when we do them together.
