When you ride a recumbent in Switzerland climbing mountain roads is unavoidable. Dario Ciani designs and builds custom battery/motor systems for trikes, bikes and velomobiles that are meant to conquer these challenging conditions. He owns the "Bike to the Future" recumbent bike shop in Neuchâtel and we were fortunate enough to visit him last month for an interview.  I also made a shorter visit to Grand Rapids, Michigan where I met up with the producers of Recumbent Cycle-Con 2026 Marshall and Kelle Randall. We travel to Rennes, France after Spezi 2026 to meet up with Philippe DesCubes. He is a recumbent trike world champion racer and also just happens to own a highly regarded recumbent bike shop named Velofasto. Philippe walks us through his amazing shop and then we talk about his racing achievements. In this episode of the Laidback Bike Report, we go behind the scenes of one of the most exciting and secretive recent developments in the recumbent world: The Theta Velomobile. For months, a small team of 4 scientists and engineers in Germany worked in total silence, even hiding their Strava data to keep their project a secret from the "nosy folks" on the German Velomobile Forum. They decided to move beyond modifying existing designs like the DFXL to start with a completely clean slate. The result is a 19kg racing machine that didn't just meet expectations—it dominated. In its public debut at Aldenhoven, the Theta shattered the long-standing 4,000m world record and went on to set a new 24-hour relay record with an average speed of 64 km/h. Step back in time to the "virtual free-for-all" of the early 1980s American recumbent revolution! In this episode we sit down with industry veteran Jeff Wills to uncover the forgotten history of the Aerocoupe—a pioneering human-powered trike born out of the Southern California HPV racing scene. What happens when a young upright bike racer makes the switch to recumbents? In this episode of the Laidback Bike Report, we’re joined by Matthew Lefthand. Nothing short of a revolution in electric assisted trikes is on the way before the end of 2025! We've talked about the French CIXI system in the past (most recently in our interview with their engineers at Spezi 2025) but now they are being implemented on trikes from ICE, HASE and maybe more. These trikes will have no chain, chainrings, chain tubes, idler wheels, derailleurs, cassettes, shifters or shifter cables. Let that sink in... On this webcast we interview Pierre Francis from CIXI. He is the co-founder and CEO who is excited to explain the PERS system in detail, talk about the early recumbent trike adopters and gives us a tour of the company's headquarters in the French Alps. Many of the frames for our bents are manufactured in Taiwan.
