E150 - Matt Barnes of The Leisure Club | Third Places, Navigating the World as an Artist, Entrepreneur Hardships & More!
2025/12/29
Matt Barnes is the Founder and Owner of The Leisure Club (@leisureclub.co) here in Columbus, Ohio.
From knowing he always had a passion for the arts, community and entertainment, the journey Matt takes on us in this episode ventures from; an original interest in performance and theater, to obtaining a business degree as a safety plan, living in 27 different places before he was 30, an experiential art project turning into a full on creative agency, to eventually learning it was a struggle to work for others and deciding to go out on his own. In all of that, the concept of "The Leisure Club" third space was taking shape. From a small rented studio space to hangout with friends, to a physical venue space where others can bring their own commuities together. We cover it all!
This is indeed a great conversation with Matt as we also talk about navigating the world at large as an artist, the woes of freelance and client culture, learning the power of saying "no" and setting boundaries as a creative, the ups and downs of running a business, and why third places matter! Lots of great stuff in this one folks!

E149 - Meghann DeWees | Hair Salon Ownership, Hustle Culture, Parenthood & Entrepreneurship, & More!
2025/12/16
Megahnn DeWees (@meg.citrinehair) is a Salon Owner, Extension Specialist, and Co-Founder of Citrine Hair & Skin here in Columbus, OH.
If you've ever walked through the Franklinton Arts District in Columbus, Ohio, there's a good chance you've passed one of the coolest-looking salons in the city. Lots of plants, moss-covered walls, glowing neon, I'll say, unmistakable vibes. That space is Citrine Hair & Skin, and this week, I'm sitting down with one of the minds behind it all: Meghann DeWees!
In this conversation, Meghann walks us through her journey into the world of hair, skin, and entrepreneurship. From breaking early industry misconceptions and even experimenting with makeup FX work in LA, to building a deeply supportive client community and opening Citrine in the middle of the pandemic. She talks candidly about surviving toxic hustle and grind culture, the realities of running a business, navigating motherhood alongside entrepreneurship, and the emotional responsibility that comes with helping people feel confident, comfortable, and seen.
We also dive into her passion for extensions and hair loss solutions, the value of shared positive energy between stylist and client, and the evolving chapters of a creative career that refuses to stay in one box.
Whether you work in cosmetology, are curious about salon life, or are building something of your own, this episode feels a little like a masterclass. Full of honest stories, grounded advice, and a reminder that success doesn't have to come at the cost of yourself!

E147 - Nate Winkelmes of The Fears | A Story of Sobriety, Mental Health, Songwriting & More
2025/11/17
Nate Winkelmes is a musician under his project The Fears ( @fears.fm )
After his first appearance on the show being way back on episode 5, this week I sit down for a great return conversation with musician and creative, Nate Winkelmes.
5 years ago when Nate was first on the show, he was just beginning his real venture into making music through the first phase of his (then) band 'The Fears', after a failed venture into the creative agency world. What I wasn't aware of at the time though, was another journey Nate was on, and that was one of sobriety.
As we catch up with Nate's story since his past episode, we talk a lot about the evolution of The Fears and his songwriting process, how his relationship with making music has changed, and as mentioned above, this conversation is rooted a lot in self relfection and growth, as Nate walks us through his journey of finding sobriety. In that he shares the realities of what the battle was like, deciding to officially check in to treatment and get help, his mental health growth alongside all of it, big lessons he learned during that time, understanding self-belief, gaining clarity, and a lot of just raw honesty that I really appreciated Nate being willing to share. This one's a great one.

2025/11/03
Tanya Vora (@totalllytanya) is a Stand Up Comedian & Entrepreneur with her brand/event series Spice Up.

She would then transition this into a different type of public speaking...stand up comedy!
As Tanya shares her story, we talk about her passion for food and culture and the stories surrounding it, the power of food bringing people together, getting involved in the hustle of start-up culture and why she got out, knowing she wants to break from the 9-5 lifestyle and navigating that, the creation of her event series Spice Up and how it all came from a pitch competition, what got her into comedy, the experience of open mics, her hopes for Spice Up & a lot more!

E145 - Ryan Francis [RETURNS] to Talk 'Riot Fest', Huge Euge, Processing Grief, Life Changes, Hopeful New Goals & More!
2025/10/21
Ryan Francis performs under the name "Huge Huge" (@hugeeugeofficial), was in cult-favorite indie horror movie ThanksKilling, and is (dubbed by me) a real good liver of life!
Ryan's back on the show this week for a proper catch up and my goodness does it not dissapoint.
If you're a longtime listener of this show, you'll know that one, Ryan is a past guest of the show with his first appearance being back on episode 41 and that in itself is worth going back and listening to if you haven't. It's one of my favorite conversations. So, I say, if you're an avid listener, there's a chance you'll know how much I appreciate the conversation I had with Ryan. For many reasons I could list again, mainly covering how the conversation was filled with a lot of very fun stories and reminders to just live life and let yourself experience things, and this episode, is such a great follow up to that.
So while Ryan shares many new fun stories of what he's been up to with his music project Huge Euge, the crazy story of playing Riot Fest, and a lot of other fun stuff I've come to expect from him, he actually also opens up about grief and processing the loss of his mom. I'm incredibly thankful for Ryan being as open as he is in this conversation and I just can't say how much I appreciate him sharing all the highs and the deepest of lows in this one. And for all of that, it's a really great conversation that I'm very excited to share with you guys.

E144 - Mike Larsen | A 20 Year TV Writing Career, The Tonight Show, Navigating the Comedy World & MORE
2025/10/06
Mike Larsen ( @writemikelarsen ) is a Comedian and Writer.
This week it's a really fun dive into the world of comedy and television as I sit down with Mike Larsen who's got plenty of experience and plenty of stories to share across his time in performing and writing comedy, and even writing political speeches along the way. Whether it's stories from sharing stages with the likes of Robin Williams, Paula Poundstone and Dana Carvey, or his time spent in the writers room for shows like 'Grace Under Fire', 'Ellen', 'The Drew Carey Show' & more, Mike has a lot of really great insight into not just joke writing and scripting and pitching in general, but also into the ever-changing entertainment world and how to navigate all the ups and downs that come with it.
Mike really does share a lot of good advice from all that he's learned (and tried himself) over the years, and many simply fun stories to go along with it. From learning alongside the greats, getting hired for TV, how to pitch scripts, dealing with bad stahd up sets and even battles with panic attacks and drinking, it's a really great chat with Mike as he shares all.

E143 - Embracing the Randomness w/ Travis Irvine | Ohio Politics, Killer Raccoons, Stand Up Comedy & More!
2025/09/15
Travis Irvine is...well many things! Some of which are a Journalist, Stand-Up Comedian, Filmmaker, avid Traveler and with involvement in Politics, he once ran for Mayor of Bexley Ohio.
This week we get to hear all the stories of Travis, and I thought I was really good at collecting side quests in life, but this man has me beat by a mile! It's a story pillared by those 5 subjects I listed at the top; Comedy, Travel, Journalism, Politics & Filmmaking. If you see the runtime, you'll know this one's a long one, and it's genuinely a blast the whole way through. As Travis shares the value of simply doing whatever we find interesting in life and learning to "embrace the randomness" we cover SO much. Including but not limited to; Making 2 movies about killer raccoons, documentary filmmaking, legitimately running for Mayor of his hometown, having many many freelance gigs over the years, some near-trouble some comedy sketches brought him from the Nigerian Gov, traveling all over the country, and doing stand-up comedy the entire time...
Folks, that list doesn't even scratch the surface! If you're looking for not just fun stories from a fun guy, but stories that serve as solid reminders to simply fill your life with whatever experiences you want, this one's for you!

E142 - Brandon McMaster talks Music Journey, Sleeping With Sirens, Nandan Street Food, Managing Ego & More
2025/09/01
Brandon McMaster is a musician in the bands Former and Lucky Shot.
Brandon's story I will kind of categorize as one of really knowing your passion and having that love really stick with you through lots of ups and downs. His story is one of reinvention, and a lot of self-reflection.
We start with discovering that love of music through his mom, to starting bands in high school, to helping launch the band Sleeping With Sirens. He opens up about the story of Sleeping with Sirens and what led to leaving the band, and while all that was happening, he was dealing the loss of his mom, and we chat the years of growth that followed in dealing with that grief.
Something in this one that I really appreciated Brandon sharing as candidly is he does, is his navigating of ego and identity. I think it's difficult for many of us, I know myself included for sure, to look back on things and take some blame or responsibility. Brandon makes some really good points here about navigating some ego checks during his time in music. We also talk what it was like when he actually stepped away from music for a little bit and found new ways of creativity in the culinary world with his project Nandan Street Food.
Eventually, music came calling again, but this time with a different mindset, one rooted in love for the craft, not chasing recognition. We talk about the highs, the lows, and everything in between.
This is what I'd call a really great raw conversation, an honest look at grief, growth, and what it really means to follow your passion when it just keeps calling.

E141 - Mo Hill on Columbus & New York Comedy Scenes, The Power of Networking, & Just Wanting to Make People Laugh
2025/08/18
Mo Hill ( @mo_funnyyy ) is a Stand-Up Comedian from Columbus, OH.
While getting his start in Ohio, Mo now often calls New York his comedy home as he travels there (and all over) while building a pretty active stand up career, as well as writing for sketches and film projects! In this episode we uncover how it all got started for Mo from simply growing up around laughter and humor, to realizing that's what he wanted to do for others and decided to pursue comedy. We talk how it started with improv and then what the transition was like from that to the world of stand-up, hitting low points where he felt he had no direction or purpose even while chasing career goals, how beginning to travel to NY began to change his career trajectory and the great networking tips he learned to put into action and practice while doing so. He also shares some favorite stories from the NY comedy scene, those moments of breakthrough throughout his journey (and feeling lost), the creation of his 'INNER SIRCLE' web series, learning to be intentional and build true confidence, + a lot more!

E140 - Rochelle Collins talks Columbus Comedy, Getting Started in Stand-Up, Finding Joy in Your Career & More!
2025/07/28
Rochelle Collins ( @therochellecollins ) is a Stand-Up Comedian based in Columbus, Ohio
In this episode, I sit down with Comedian and all around funny person Rochelle Collins — a Columbus-based comic whose roots in farm life might of taught her a thing or two that now fuels her creative world. But listen we don't talk about farming much in this one honestly, but what we do talk about is her journey from discovering comedy early on to hitting the stage for the first time at an open mic, and what she's learned along the way performing now countless shows. Rochelle's all over the place in the Columbus comedy scene. Throughout this conversation she also shares a refreshing perspective honestly on just creating and doing comedy for the love of it and how she's had clarity on that from the start, we also talk balancing a comedy career with a day job, gatekeeping in creative worlds, and why chasing joy — not fame — is the real win for her.
We also dive into her writing process, how she approaches joke-building as she teaches me a thing or two along the way, how one gets involved in comedy in general with plenty of good starter tips, and the biggest lessons she's learned over the years of doing things simply because they sound fun to do + tons more!

E139 - Adam Little [RETURNS]
2025/07/14
Adam Little (@alilshow) a sketch Comedian, Writer & Filmmaker from Columbus, Ohio.
In this episode, it's a RETURN guest from a few years back, it's Adam Little back on the show for a fun catch up conversation since his last time on the show, back in 2021 and as you could guess, a lot has changed.
We talk a lot about his changed perspectives on content creation and his social media presence now and how it's evolved from years ago when, at that time, he was pretty actively pursuing the creation of sketches and his personal brand at that time. Now he's got plans and goals that expand outside of the cycle of creating just for social and more for the actual joy of it. We talk filmmaking plans and other ideas in general, the difficulty of ambition coming and going in waves, learning to let your authentic wants and needs guide you, and a lot of talk about finding personal comfort and understanding of what we truly want and not always feeling like we have to be "on" – simply giving ourselves space and time to navigate the waves of life. It's all that and a lot more for a really fun return conversation!

E138 - Corey Mouch of 'Southcourt'
2025/06/23
In this episode, I catch up with Corey Mouch, musician from the band @Southcourt (formerly 90s' Kids), and we talk all about what it's like being a musician chasing the dream of music in this one, the highs and lows of chasing a dream in general, and how he's learned to create just for the love of it. I've gotta say, as I always do, these episodes, stories and perspectives are always in my opinion, good for anyone of any background to hear, but I'll double down on saying that this episode is a GREAT one to listen to if you're a musician. Creator of any kind yes, but for sure if you're involved in the world of music.
He shares how it all started with asking for a guitar as a kid, jamming in friends' basements, and accidentally becoming the singer of his first band. Corey later opens up about balancing his music with a day job, what it's really like to "almost" make it (a couple times over), and the kind of perspective that comes with doing this for seven years with the same group of guys.
We talk about the band's move from Columbus to Nashville, their name change, learning how to play the social media game, and why letting go of chasing what's popular can lead to better, more honest music. It's Cory's story yes, but it's honestly far more of a conversation about staying passionate, staying honest with yourself, staying the course, and remembering why you started it all in the first place. Corey was a great interview, great storyteller and shared in an honest way that I think will land with a lot of you!

E137 - Angela Petro - Founder of Sweet Carrot & Together & Co. - Talks Food Hospitality, Ohio Food Culture, Scaling a Business & More!
2025/06/03
This week on I'm joined by Angela Petro, the founder of Sweet Carrot and catering company Together & Co., and simply someone with a lot of stories, laughs, and insight to share!
In this conversation, Angela shares a ton of wisdom, and also a little judgment, mostly for the fact that I've never worked a serving job and haven't watched enough Ted Lasso...(This is fair.)
We get into how she built Sweet Carrot from a food truck, to one physical location to three…and why she eventually brought it back down to one. We talk about the reality of running businesses in the hospitality world, how the pandemic changed everything, and how her first catering gig was…of all things, a funeral! Angela also shares how living in Germany helped her discover her love for hospitality, the differences in how other countries view service work, and how Columbus has its own food culture and challenges. We dig into creative burnout, figuring out if you're more of a visionary or an implementor, and what it's like for our goals to change shape and navigating the change.
Angela's now doing some amazing work in leadership development, and we also chat about what's next as she gears up for a Sweet Carrot relaunch. It's a good one, especially if you've ever worked in food service, tried to build something from scratch, or just love a good story!
