Life can seem pretty dark at times; yet the darker things get, the more Christ's light will shine! Join us for today's study in Isaiah 9 where we'll look into prophecies of light in the midst of darkness and judgment.  DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. Isaiah 9 continues God’s message that began back in Chapter 8 of both judgment and restoration. Verse 1 introduces us to the person who will bring about their restoration. How will the lands of Zebulun and Naphtali be made glorious? According to the podcast, why do they play such an important role in that region? How does referring to them as “Galilee” give us a time stamp of when these events are to take place? 2. In verse 2, what is the great light that they will see? 3. In verse 3, what will be the people’s response to the work of God spoken about in this passage? 4. In verses 4 & 5, what will God be accomplishing among them? What does He do to their oppressors? What is the extent of this victory? 5. Who is the “child” being spoken of in verse 6? What will be His domain? What will He be called? What do these names signify about His character and His work? 6. The podcast explained that the wording of verse 6 teaches us an important aspect of the nature of Christ. How does the phrases a “Child who is born” and “a Son who is given” give us a window into Christ’s preexistent nature and His incarnation? 7. In verse 16, what role do the false teachers have in this judgment? In verse 17, what is the Lord’s view of them? 11. What picture of judgment does Isaiah give in verses 18-20? How do the people respond to the Lord in verse 21? Why do you think they would respond this way? As we work through the Book of Isaiah, we are increasingly seeing Christ's kingdom come into focus. Sometimes being faithful to the Lord means finding difficulty rather than ease. Today as we discuss Isaiah 6, we look at the Lord's call for Isaiah and the warning that God's calling for Isaiah going to be rough. We can be encouraged that difficulties in life and service to the Lord may be part of the call God has for our life too! DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. In your life, where are you serving the Lord? When times get difficult in that service, how do you tend to respond? 2. Verse 1 contains Isaiah’s vision of the Lord. What (of the Lord) fills the temple? What is this? What does its size indicate about the Lord? 3. In verse 2, what stood above the Lord? The podcast mentioned that the name of these beings literally means “burning ones” and yet, they cover their faces. What does this indicate about the presence of the Lord? 4. In verse 3, what did the seraphim call out to the Lord? What is the importance of repeating this three times? What does this indicate about the Lord’s character? 5. In verse 5, how does Isaiah react to this vision of the Lord? What was his main concern? Why? 6. In verse 6, what does the Seraphim do? How might it have been possible for this seraph to be holding a burning coal? 7. In verse 7, what is the result of the Isaiah’s lips touching the coal? How might passages like Numbers 31:22-23 help us understand the impact of fire on a person’s sin? 8. Notice the “us” in verse 8. What does this indicate about the nature of God? 9. What does the Lord ask in verse 8? What does Isaiah’s response indicate about his heart to serve the Lord? 10. What does the Lord tell Isaiah he is to do in verse 9? How will the people respond in verses 9 & 10? 11. If the Lord gave you this commission, how would you feel? Along these lines, what did Isaiah ask at the beginning of verse 11? Why? What was the Lord’s answer? 12. What kind of judgment does the Lord foretell in verse 12? 13. What glimmer of hope does the Lord give Isaiah in verse 13? The Book of Isaiah is filled with complex messages that combine warnings, prophecies and encouragements. Today's passage is foundational to understanding the Book of Isaiah and includes warnings about abandoning the Covenant with God and the Coming Day when He will establish a New Kingdom for His covenant people. DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. Isaiah 2 is looking far down the timeline of history. According to verse 1, when will these things take place? 2. Verse 2 starts out talking about the “last days”. If you have time, glance at Ezekiel 38:16, Hosea 3:5 and Micah 4:1. When will these prophecies take place? However, the authors of Acts 2:17 and Hebrews 1:2 indicate that they were in the last days. Based on all of these verses, when are the last days? The podcast mentioned the principle of prophetic mountain ranges. What is that principle and how does it relate to this verse? 3. Read over verses 2 & 3. How do these verses characterize the last days? 4. According to verse 4, when these events take place, what kinds of things will the Lord be doing? What will the nations not be doing? Why? 5. In verse 5, Isaiah calls the people to walk in the light of the world. What “light” (so to speak) were they walking in verses 6 to 8? 6. What impact did their sins have on the overall society, as exemplified in verse 9? 7. In verses 10 & 11, when the Day of the Lord takes place, what will happen to the people? How will the Lord be exalted? 8. Read over verses 12 to 21, what kinds of things will happen on that “day”? 9. This chapter ends with a sudden exhortation in verse 22. In light of the judgment to come, what should our view of “man” be? Why? 10. Take a moment to reflect on the kind of kingdom described in Isaiah 2. How is this different than the “kingdoms of men” that we live in today? Today we begin our study of Isaiah! Isaiah is an incredibly important book in the Bible and today we'll give a quick overview of the book of Isaiah and his message to us repentance and faithfulness to our faithful God. Join us!  DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. The name “Isaiah” means “The Lord is salvation”. According to the podcast, why is that a great summary of the Book of Isaiah? How does God’s covenant relate to the theme that the Lord is our salvation? 2. Based on the podcast, what is a prophet? Likewise, what is the “office” of a prophet? Do you remember what the podcast said was the difference between “foretelling” and “forthtelling”? What are those differences? What were these differences for? 3. Verse 1 tells us that Isaiah prophesied during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah. Generally speaking, what was going on during this time? 4. Read over verse 2. What does this verse mean? Why do you think that the Lord has Isaiah begin on this point here? 5. In verse 3, who is the “Israel” that is being spoken about? What do we learn about them from this verse? 6. Read over verses 4 to 6. In verse 4, how were the people weighed down in iniquity? In verses 5 & 6, what was the result of their sin? 7. Verse 9 & 10 makes the amazing comparison between Israel and Sodom and Gomorrah. From what you know about Genesis 19, what happened in Sodom and Gomorrah? Why is verses 7 to 9 warning the people that they are at risk of the same judgment as those infamous cities? 8. In verses 11 to 15, what religious acts were rejected by the Lord? Why did He reject them? In our world today, how might a person have a similar mindset in their religion and likewise be rejected by the Lord? 9. Clearly Israel has been rebelling against the Lord and they are about to face His judgment. Yet the Lord gives them a path of repentance in verses 16 & 17. What does He tell them to do? Why? What would it take for them to carry out this kind of righteous pursuit from now on? 10. Verse 18 is a heartwarming verse reflecting God’s heart for His people. What does He tell them? In verse 19, what does He promise them? 11. Verses 21 to 23 return to the theme of Israel’s sin. What sinful things were the people doing? What righteous things were they not doing? 12. In verse 25 & 26, what is the relationship between God’s judgment and their purification? Why would we want to submit to this kind of “refining fire” in our own life? 13. In verse 27, when God redeems His people, by what means will He redeem them? 14. In verses 28 to 31, what will be the fate of those who are not redeemed? In light of their sins, why is this fate “just” and deserved? As we've been working through God's Wisdom; today we turn to Ecclesiastes chapter 12. Although this is the final chapter of this book of wisdom, Solomon's wise conclusions are just as relevant today, as they were when he first wrote them. Join us! STUDY AND DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: 1. Who is the likely author of the Book of Ecclesiastes? According to the podcast, at what point of life did he write this book? What path has he taken to arrive at these conclusions? 2. Read verses 1-7. What stage of life is Solomon referring to? Why is it important to follow God when we’re young and not just when we’re at the later stages of our life? 3. What does the term “vanity” mean in verse 8? What does Solomon mean by saying that “ALL is vanity”? What is he referring to? 4. According to verse 11, what are wise words liken to? How are they like this? In your own life, do wise words have this effect on you? Why or why not? 5. In verse 12, what is the danger of “many books”? What could “many books” be compared with in our day? Is there a danger, in your life, of reading too many “books”? 6. Verse 13 sums up the whole book by saying “The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments.” From what you know of Solomon’s life, why is this final conclusion so surprising? Why do you think he eventually came to this conclusion? Have you come to this conclusion yourself, yet? Why or why not? 7. Verse 14 provides the reasons for Solomon’s conclusions in verse 13. Why should we always be aware of the fact that “God will bring every act to judgment”? Think about that word “every”. How should the fact that God will bring your “every” act under judgment change how you live? 8. Verse 14 has an added layer of meaning for those whose sins have been cleansed by Christ. How does the fact that Jesus has paid the penalty of your “every” sin change how you live? 9. As we wrap up our short study in Ecclesiastes, are there any life-corrections that you need to make in light of this key chapter in God’s Word? Proverbs 31 is known for its instruction for an Excellent Wife. Although this chapter can be intimidating, today, we'll discuss how God will give wisdom to anyone who desires to follow these wise words in their home. Join us!  1. Verse 1 tells us that the proverbs in this chapter were the words of King Lemuel. According to the podcast, who might he be? Ultimately, do we need to know his identity? 2. Proverbs 31 can be pretty intense. Yet, verse 1 tells us who first taught these principles to King Lemuel. Who was that? Does this help us accept these truths? Ultimately, should that matter to us? 3. In verse 3, why do you think Lemuel’s mom warns the king about giving his strength to women? What does this look like? According to verse 3, why is this a problem? 4. What is being warned about in verses 4 to 7? According to these verses, who should not be drinking wine or strong drink? Why? In these verses, what exception is given as a sensible use of alcohol? What might be a modern application of this principle? 5. Verses 8 & 9 speak of the influence that kings have. Who (or whom) should they be using their influence for? What might this look like in our day and age? 6. The podcast mentioned that verses 10 to 31 form an acrostic in the Hebrew language. Why do you think King Lemuel’s mother gave him these principles in this acrostic format? How important do you think this acrostic was for him to remember this all those years later? 7. Read over verses 10 to 31. a. What principles do you see regarding how a wise wife relates to her husband? b. What principles relate to how she handles her children? c. What principles relate to how she handles her home? 8. If you’re a wife, take a moment and evaluate how your own life conforms (or does not conform) to these principles. Are there any areas where you need to improve? 9. If you’re not a wife, read over verses 10 to 31 and write down the principles that are generic enough that the principle relates to everyone. Are there any principles here that are exclusive to wives? 10. As you reflect on the principles of the Wise & Excellent Wife, is this standard “impossible”? As you reflect on how we have any spiritual growth, what spiritual realities must be present within a person to live according to this chapter? Most of us face conflict from time to time and God's Word tells us there IS a way to speak with wisdom, even in conflict. Today we'll work through Proverbs 18 and learn about how to work through conflict with God's wisdom. STUDY AND DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: 1. Hopefully, you’ve already read Proverbs 18. Take a moment and make a note of which verses address godly speech. How many did you find? Why do you think godly speech is so important for having godly wisdom? 2. In verse 1, why is it foolish to quarrel against wisdom? Why do people sometimes “stomp off” when faced with wisdom? How is this a reflection of verse 2, where that person just wants to “reveal their own mind”? 3. What are the benefits of wise words in verse 4? What is the danger of foolish words in verses 6 & 7? 4. How are whispering words described in verse 8? What do you think the author means by “whispering words”? 5. In verse 13, how might a person give an answer “before he hears”? Why do you think this would be folly and shame to him? 6. What is the principle of impartiality in verse 17? Why is this a key aspect of gaining wisdom? 7. According to verse 20, what is the fruit of wise words? 8. According to verse 21, what are the dangers of evil words? 9. As you reflect on this quick study of Proverbs 18, which principles of these verses most describes you? Are there any areas that you need to work on, that you might be a person who speaks with wise and godly words? God has given His people wonderful riches of wisdom. Join us as we dig into Proverbs 3 and discover the riches God has for us! DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. Today’s podcast on Proverbs 3 opened by explaining how a key message throughout scripture is that of obedience to the Lord. The podcast then explained how various biblical teachers explain obedience with different terms such as holiness, or righteousness, etc. How is “wisdom” another way of characterizing “obedience to God”? Does your life reflect wise obedience to God? 2. Read over verse 1. What does a parent typically mean when he or she calls upon their children to remember what they’re saying? What promise does Solomon give in verse 2 for listening to him? Why would this promise be valid? 3. In verses 3 & 4, what is the value of kindness? How would you define kindness? How does a person maintain an attitude of kindness towards others? What impact would this have on the world, if everyone walked around with an attitude of kindness towards their fellow man? 4. Read verses 5 & 6. What does it mean to “trust in the Lord”? What other places might we be tempted to trust, instead? What promise does Solomon give to those who trust the Lord? Why would this promise bear out in the lives of these people? What does it mean to “lean” on something? Why is it a danger to lean on our own understanding of things? What is the antidote to leaning on our own understanding? 5. How are people tempted to be wise in their own eyes (as stated in verse 7)? Why would people begin to think that they “know better” than God? Why might this become a hindrance to obeying the Lord? 6. What is the gist of verses 9 & 10? What does it mean to “honor” the Lord from our wealth? Is this talking about “amounts” or “heart attitudes” or something else? How is it possible to give towards the Lord’s work in a way that dishonors Him? Are you honoring the Lord from your wealth right now? 7. In verses 11 & 12, why is it a blessing to receive discipline from the Lord? Has the Lord ever disciplined you? Was your reaction similar to the exhortation in these verses? Why or why not? 8. Read over verses 13 to 24. What are some of the riches and blessings that come from knowing and obeying wisdom? 9. What kind of confidence does verse 25 & 26 exhort us to have? Where does this confidence come from? Can a person disobey God and still have this kind of confidence? Why or why not? 10. In verses 27 to 30, how might a person “withhold good” to those whom it is due? What might this look like in your life today? 11. Read over verses 31 to 35. What is God’s view of the wicked and foolish? Why should we, also, have to have this view of these kinds of people? Where might we be tempted to envy or admire the wicked and foolish? What is the danger of that kind of thinking? 12. Take a few moments to reflect on Proverbs 3. What verse(s) stand out to you as a gem of wisdom you can carry with you throughout your day today? What is wisdom and how do we get it? Join us today as we begin our study in the Book of Proverbs and mine out God's true wisdom for life! DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. How would you define wisdom? What does it look like? What does it accomplish? How does a person gain wisdom? 2. The podcast mentioned that the book of Proverbs is “Gnomic Literature.” What is “Gnomic Literature” and why is that important when applying the countless promises that are in the book of Proverbs? 3. The podcast explained that the Hebrew word for wisdom is “chokmah” which also means “skill” and that wisdom is “skill for life.” How is this different from your understanding of wisdom? Does this affect your hope that you could be able to gain more wisdom? 4. The podcast suggested reading the Book of Proverbs very slowly, perhaps even only a few verses a day and then meditating on them. Why would this be a helpful way to study this important book? 5. Going on to Proverbs 1, verses 2 – 6 tell us what this book is intending to accomplish. What are they? Which of these benefits are you in most need for today? 6. According to verse 7, where must we start in our endeavor to grow in knowledge? In your understanding, why must we start here? What would be the danger of starting in other places? 7. According to verse 7, what is the mindset of fools? Why do they think this way? In terms of your own walk, does your life more align with the first half of verse 7, or the second? 8. What kind of harm can befall us when we walk with “sinners”? 10. What does a wise person do in verse 20? How is this different than the fool or the sinner that this chapter has warned about? 11. Why do you think that verses 20-33 personifies wisdom as a woman? What is she like in these verses? What does she promise? What does she warn about? 12. How should we respond to wisdom’s reproof in verse 23? How do people tend to respond, instead? 13. What is the final promise in verse 33? Why do you think this promise holds true for those who listen to wisdom? 14. Think about your own approach to wisdom. Are you a person who listens to the wise counsel of others? If so, what does that look like in your life? If not, what might have to change in your thinking so that you would align with God’s instructions? We know we're supposed to worship God, but sometimes it's a challenge. Today we look at Psalm 150 and talk about several key principles to worshiping our Lord in spirit and truth. Join us! STUDY AND DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: 1. The podcast began by citing John 4:23 & 24 where Jesus said, “But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” What does it mean to worship God in our spirit according to Hid truth? Since this is what God seeks, would you say that a worshipful attitude characterizes you and your life? 2. The podcast mentioned that the word “praise” has a wide range of meaning that can be boiled down to admiration and speaking well of someone. This word “praise” occurs in every verse for a total of 13 times in 6 verses. What does this tell you about the importance of you personally speaking well of God to Him? How is this principle reflected in your private worship? How about your worship with your church community? 3. Keeping with the idea of “praise” meaning to speak well of the Lord, how is that principle demonstrated in verse 2? What are we to speak well about with God in this verse? How about taking a moment to reflect on “mighty deeds” that God has done (either in your life, the Bible, etc)? How is God “excellently great”? 4. The podcast mentioned that it’s important that we praise God in truth about things that are true about Him. Why is truth so important? How would a person’s praise be limited by not knowing truth about God or for praising Him for things that are not true about Him? 5. Verses 3 – 5 talk about praising God with various instruments. Do you know how to play any of these (or their modern equivalents)? Are you using that skill to worship God? How does putting praise to music deepen our connection with what we’re celebrating about God? 6. Have you ever arrived at church, or some other setting where God’s people were worshiping Him, and you didn’t arrive with a heart of praise? Does verse 6 give wiggle room for that kind of thinking? How might a person, who’s having an off day, bring their spirit around to worshipping God? 7. Finally, the last couple of key chapter episodes have focused on worship. Why is this instruction necessary? Is praise and worship automatic? Why or why not? 8. In light of the priority of worship in God’s Word, how might you increase the priority of praise and worship in your own life?
