The Sears Brothers - 2025 Charter Season Recap
2026/01/20
Happy new year everyone and thank you for tuning into the SeaBros Fishing Podcast! On this episode, Taylor and I sit down to review the 2025 Mass Bay Guides charter fishing season. It's been a bit since recording our last podcast, and it felt really good to sit down and talk fishing. Since our season ended, we have spent the past couple of months focusing on family time and relaxing during the holidays.  In this conversation we discuss our experiences and what we learned during each phase of our fishing season last year. We talk about the early migration striped bass fishing, shad fishing, summer & fall tuna fishing, and the amount of shark bi-catch that we had last season.  2025 was hands down one of our most challenging years of fishing in our area, especially in regards to tuna fishing. We theorize and explain our best educated guesses on why we didn't see consistent tuna fishing in Massachusetts Bay last year. This was also our first fishing season without our father "Old Greg" in the mix. He's still around, and doing well, but some medical issues impacted him prior to our fishing season and he couldn't be on the water last year. It was great to sit down as brothers, talk fishing, hunting, and just catch up on life. We are both excited to get season 7 of the SeaBros Podcast going. There are some great guests and topics lined up for this year. As always, thank you all for listening and for the support! Captain Joe Dion and Mike "Hackah" Miller - "Bronze Mackerel"
2025/06/02
Thank you for tuning into the SeaBros Fishing Podcast! On this episode we had the pleasure of chatting with two very experienced bluefin tuna harpooners, Captain Joe Dion and Mike "Hackah" Miller. We have known Joe and Mike since our dock rat phase as kids. Mike has been chasing giant bluefin tuna since the hand-line fishing days in the 1970s and 1980s. Joe has been tuna fishing since he was a child, and his first ever trip harpooning was with Mike back in the 90s. Both of these guys were recently featured on the new Discovery Channel show "Harpoon Hunters." If you haven't watched the show yet, you absolutely should. Some of the aerial shots they captured are incredible. In this conversation Joe and Mike talk in detail about the harpoon fishery. They discuss everything from flying and spotting fish from the airplane, the type of water and conditions they look for from the tower, and the different behavior fish exhibit during their migration into New England waters in the early summer. Some of the stories that these guys share are amazing. They talk about what they have found in fish's stomachs, sticking big fish right off the beach in shallow water, and much more. This podcast was truly awesome. Joe and Mike are hilarious and shared a lot of information with us. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did! Zack Richardson - "Zack's Custom Rods"
2025/02/01
Thank you for tuning into the SeaBros Fishing Podcast! On this episode we sit down with long time friend and custom fishing rod builder, Zack Richardson. We first met Zack during our past time in the tackle industry; making squid bars, offshore lures, manufacturing skirts, and building custom rods.  Zack is one of the most determined and professional young business owners in the fishing industry in our opinion. Since 2011, he has owned and operated Zack's Custom Rods based out of Westport, Massachusetts. He and his crew offer the full spectrum of offshore and inshore rods, designed and specialized for anything from giant bluefin tuna to striped bass. For any young aspiring entrepreneurs listening, Zack was a full time college student studying entrepreneurship and marketing, while minoring in environmental science at Bryant University. Throughout Zack's career at Bryant, he was awarded the GOSS Prize, received recognition from American/RI Innovation, and has been published as one of the most successful students at the university. In this conversation we discuss building a business from scratch and juggling school work and while running a company. Zack takes us through his entire process of building a rod, or set of rods, from start to finish. He talks about the captains and anglers that he worked with throughout many seasons of testing specific blanks and setups, before offering them to the public. Zack is an awesome person and is very passionate about what he does. We hope you enjoy this as much as we did! Captain Fred Malcarne - "The Proof is in the Pudding"
2025/01/17
Thank you for tuning into the SeaBros Fishing Podcast! On this episode we sit down with a true innovator in the fishing tackle industry, Captain Fred Malcarne. Fred grew up in New England, has been a fisherman and a hunter for the majority of his life. He owns and operates a company that many of you are probably familiar with, Winthrop Tackle. Fred has had a long career as a tool maker and is a talented craftsman. Winthrop Tackle was born when he demanded higher quality components for his own fishing rods. Winthrop is an American-made manufacturer of the finest quality, custom sport-fishing products that are used by some of the best sportfishing boats all over the world. The continuous evolution of Winthrop's product lines starts with the input from experienced rod builders and world-class fishermen. Thank you for tuning in to the SeaBros Fishing Podcast! On this episode we sit down again with our deckhand Ben Makaroff and our father, Old Greg, to review our 2024 charter fishing season on the Mass Bay Guides boats. The Mass Bay Guides 2024 season was action packed. We ran over 250 charters on our boats, experienced many amazing days of fishing, laughed a lot, and had incredible guests aboard. The main focus of this conversation was to review our logbook from this past season and discuss what we experienced in our local waters around Massachusetts. We talk about everything from light tackle shad fishing in the spring months, striped bass fishing through early summer, and share what we experienced during our tuna season. Old Greg ensures there is plenty of filterless humor sprinkled throughout our discussion... We had a lot of fun on this one and we are officially in winter mode. We will be pushing out bi-weekly content this off-season as we start season 6 of the podcast, so stay tuned. Thank you to all of our listeners for the continued support. Captain Matt Perachio - "Tighten Up"
2024/11/12
Thank you for tuning into the SeaBros Fishing Podcast! On this episode we had the pleasure of having a conversation with local captain Matt Perachio of Tighten Up Charters, Cape Cod. We have known Matt for several years, and fish a lot of the same grounds throughout Massachusetts and Cape Cod Bay. Matt's offshore fishing career began during his childhood summers on Cape Cod with his family. Over the years his affinity for the ocean left him wanting more and eventually he transitioned from  recreational and commercial striped bass fishing, to the adrenaline packed pursuit of light tackle bluefin tuna and taking out clients for hire. Today, Matt is a full time charter fisherman and guide. He runs over 150 trips a season, with most of his trips being light tackle bluefin tuna trips; specifically targeting bluefin using casting and jigging tactics. Matt owns and operates a 27' Onslow Bay, and has several other charter captains and run and gun boats under his wing. Matt is a wealth of knowledge and is extremely passionate about all types of fishing. In this conversation, Matt takes us through his charter fishing program. We talk about different tactics that we use for chasing striped bass and tuna throughout New England. Matt goes into detail on how he approaches light tackle tuna fishing. He talks about everything from rigging, finding fish, to approaching schools of busting tuna. Recently Matt and his crew have started an online resource for everything light tackle tuna fishing called Bluefin Plus. If you are a light tackle junky, make sure you check it out. Captain Mark DeCabia and Shark - "Everyone's Tom Brady When Throwing a Vortex"
2024/04/19
Thank you for tuning into the SeaBros Fishing Podcast! We have two returning guests on this episode of the podcast. Captain Mark DeCabia is back with his good friend and first-mate aboard the Rebel,  Bryan "Shark" Youngkin. If you haven't listened to the previous episodes with these guys, make sure you do. Mark has decades of offshore fishing experience, and he and Shark make a hell of a crew. In this conversation we talk about everything from northeast canyon fishing to who Mark considers to be legends in the fishery. It's always a pleasure to sit down and talk with fishermen of Mark and Shark's caliber. We hope you enjoy this as much as we did!
