Description

Empowering women (and the partners who love them) to live their best sex lives. Combining the power of mind-work, body-science and relationships, I joyously smash the societal barriers that are keeping us from living our best intimate lives. Whether you are young or past menopause, single or in a long-term relationship, it is never too late or too early to realize YOU ARE NOT BROKEN. With humor, candor and ease, I break down the stories that we have been told about being sexual beings, to help us play, and normalize our intimacy. Nothing in this podcast is personal medical advice, of course.

This conversation covers a wide range of topics related to sexual health, hormones, and the impact of technology. Some of the key themes include the role of role modeling and accountability in personal fitness, the misconceptions about menopause and desire, the influence of hormones in personal training, the potential use of clitoral ultrasound for evaluating cardiovascular health, the effects of stress on sexual desire, the relationship between diabetes and sexual function, the concerns and considerations of hormone replacement therapy, the impact of coffee on a new menopause medication, the importance of advocacy and education in sexual health, the connection between orgasm and pain, the use of sex tech and its effects on sexual function, the importance of human touch in sexual experiences, and the debunking of myths surrounding semen retention and rough sex. Enjoy! Reminder to follow, subscribe and share for more! Take Aways Lifelong learning is important for staying up-to-date with evolving knowledge about sexual health and hormones. Sexuality is a human right and should be appreciated as part of the human experience. Definitions and labels in sexuality can vary and it is important to ask individuals how they define themselves. The microbiome and immune function play a role in vulvar pain and sexual desire. Healthcare providers should prioritize addressing quality of life and understanding the unique needs of their patients. Accountability and role modeling can be powerful tools in personal fitness and wellness. Menopause does not always lead to low desire, and the quality of a long-term committed relationship can be a risk factor for low desire. Hormones play a significant role in personal training and muscle recovery. Clitoral ultrasound may have potential applications in evaluating cardiovascular health in women. Stress can have both positive and negative effects on sexual desire and function. Diabetes can impact sexual function, and physical activity can help protect against sexual dysfunction in women with diabetes. The use of hormone replacement therapy should be carefully considered, and the marketing of hormone-free alternatives can be misleading. Coffee may have an impact on the efficacy of certain medications, including new menopausal medications for hot flashes. Advocacy and education are crucial in promoting sexual health and debunking myths. The brain plays a significant role in sexual pleasure and pain perception. Sex tech can enhance sexual experiences but should not and can not replace human connection and touch. There is a need for knowledge translation in research to ensure that findings are effectively communicated and applied in clinical practice. It is important to prioritize consent and safety in sexual activities, and to debunk myths and misconceptions surrounding rough sex and choking. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/kj-casperson/message

246. Midlife Transformation: The Power of Education, Empowerment and Hormone Therapy In this conversation, Katey Armstrong shares her journey of discovering Dr. Kelly Casperson and the impact of hormone education on her life. She discusses her experience with prolapse and the challenges she faced in accessing hormone treatment in Canada. Katey emphasizes the importance of taking responsibility for one's health and wellness and the need for individualized approaches. She also highlights the positive impact of hormones on her fitness and overall well-being. Katey expresses curiosity about trying testosterone in the future. In this conversation, Katey Armstrong and Dr. Kelly Casperson discuss the use of estrogen and progesterone in hormone therapy. They cover topics such as the application and benefits of estrogen, the routine and benefits of vaginal estrogen, and the use of oral progesterone. They also discuss the timeline for feeling better after starting hormone therapy and the challenges of getting dexa scans. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the long-term benefits of hormone therapy and the importance of personal empowerment in taking control of one's health. Takeaways Education and self-advocacy are crucial in navigating hormone treatment. Individual experiences with hormones can vary, and it is important to find what works best for each person. Taking responsibility for one's health and wellness is empowering. Hormones can have a positive impact on fitness and overall well-being. Estrogen gel can be applied topically and provides benefits such as improved skin health and reduced hot flashes. Vaginal estrogen can be used to improve vaginal dryness and overall comfort. Oral progesterone is often taken in the evening to help with sleep. It can take several weeks to start feeling better after starting hormone therapy, and it's important to give the body time to adjust. Getting dexa scans to assess bone health can be challenging in some areas. Estrogen receptors need time to regulate and upregulate in response to hormone therapy. Hormone therapy has long-term benefits for conditions such as dementia, heart disease, and bone health. It's important to educate oneself and take control of one's health, rather than relying solely on healthcare providers. 2024/01/07
Changing Women’s Healthcare From Inside Medicine Dr. Sarah Cigna (She/Her) is an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology with The George Washington University. She is the current Director of the SAGA (Sexual Health and Gender Affirmation) Center and Director of the first Sexual Medicine Fellowship in the country for OBGYN physicians. She is active in the International Society for the Study of Women's Sexual Health (ISSWSH); she has served on the education committee for several years and will be taking over as the Education Chair this year. She is a Fellow of ISSWSH and runs a busy sexual medicine outpatient service, teaching medical students, residents, fellow clinicians and patients the wonders of sex medicine! She still enjoys birth work (delivering babies), and benign GYN surgery. She hopes to model the role of sexual medicine specialist in an academic setting for aspiring sex detectives.  Dr. Sarah Cigna, an expert in sexual medicine, discusses the importance of sexual health education, challenges in talking about sexual health, the need for comprehensive vulvar examinations, improving access to sexual medicine education, expanding sexual medicine fellowships, addressing side effects of birth control, individualized contraceptive options, improving pain control for IUD placement, and the misconception of testosterone as the desire hormone. The conversation explores the complexity of hormones and desire, emphasizing that there isn't just one hormone responsible for desire and that they all play together. The importance of individualized treatment and its impact on quality of life is discussed, highlighting the life-changing nature of sexual medicine. The significance of referrals and second opinions is emphasized, encouraging healthcare providers to seek help from specialists and patients to seek multiple perspectives. The need for expanding sexual medicine fellowships is addressed, calling for advanced learning opportunities for all healthcare professionals. Takeaways Sexual health education is crucial for healthcare providers to better serve their patients. Comprehensive vulvar examinations are essential for diagnosing and treating sexual health issues. Expanding sexual medicine fellowships can help train more clinicians in this specialized field. Individualized contraceptive options should be offered to patients based on their specific needs and preferences. Improving pain control options for IUD placement can make the procedure more comfortable for patients. Testosterone is not the sole hormone responsible for desire, and other factors, such as estrogen, play a significant role. Hormones and desire are complex, and there isn't just one hormone responsible for desire. Individualized treatment in sexual medicine can greatly improve quality of life. Referrals and second opinions are important in sexual medicine to ensure patients receive the best care. Expanding sexual medicine fellowships is crucial for advancing the field and providing evidence-based care.
