Small Business, BIG Opportunity: What's Next for Main Street with Jacqueline Snyder
2026/10/19
Can small retail businesses REALLY compete in today's world? With Amazon, big-box stores, rising costs, and changing shopping habits, it's easy to wonder what the future holds for our Main Street businesses. But you guys, the future of small business is NOT all doom and gloom! And today's guest has the experience, stories, and perspective to remind us why. I'm joined by Jacqueline Snyder, creator of the Profitable Product Boss Method and host of The Product Boss Podcast, one of the top-ranked business podcasts serving product-based entrepreneurs. And OH MY GOODNESS, did we have a fantastic conversation! We're talking about the future of retail, profitability, and one of the greatest advantages small businesses have over the big guys: The customer EXPERIENCE. Because people aren't just buying products. They're buying into the people, places, and experiences that make them feel connected. And that's something local businesses can do incredibly well. We also dig into a truth that might surprise you: Selling MORE products doesn't always mean making MORE money. Jacqueline shares why focusing on your bestsellers and understanding what's actually driving revenue can be far more valuable than constantly adding more products, more inventory, and more work. In this episode, we talk about: Why Jacqueline is optimistic about the future of small retail and product-based businesses. The power of creating a memorable in-store customer experience. How small businesses can lean into advantages that big-box stores can't easily replicate. Why profitability matters more than simply increasing sales. How focusing on your bestsellers can create more sustainable growth. Why knowing your customers and what they value is essential to building a business that lasts. The opportunities ahead for Main Street businesses willing to embrace what makes them different.Whether you own a boutique, gift shop, specialty store, or sell products online, this conversation is full of encouragement and practical perspective. Because the goal isn't just to sell more. It's to build a profitable business that people love supporting. People Are Finding Your Business. Here's Why They Might Not Choose You.
2026/10/12
Getting found on Google and AI is great. But what happens AFTER someone discovers your business? Do they like what they see? Do they feel a connection? Do they think, "YES! This is exactly what I've been looking for!" Because getting FOUND is only the beginning. This week on The Visibility Podcast, we're continuing my Found, Liked, and Trusted visibility framework with two more steps to help your local service business become the go-to option in your community. And you guys, one of these is my absolute FAVORITE things to work on with business owners! We're talking about photos and messaging. Your photos help potential customers picture themselves working with you. Your messaging helps them understand why you're the right fit. And sometimes, just a few words can take your marketing from MEH to WOW! In this episode, we're covering: Step 6: Photos. How to use your Google Business Profile photos to showcase the business you have TODAY.Four perspectives every business owner should consider when photographing their business. Why outdated photos and inconsistent information can confuse potential customers.Step 7: Messaging. How to create a tagline that speaks directly to your ideal customer.Real examples from my dance studio and a client in the stone and interiors industry. Why the messaging you used five or ten years ago may not be attracting the customers you want today. How consistent messaging across your website, Google Business Profile, social media, and business listings helps people recognize and connect with your brand. Here's what I want you to remember: You don't necessarily need MORE marketing. You need the marketing you're already doing to work harder for you. And that starts with understanding who you want to attract and communicating why your business is the right choice. Ready to become the go-to option in your industry? My Visibility Audit helps you identify what's working, what's disconnected, and where your business has opportunities to improve its visibility across Google, AI search, your website, and social media. And if your messaging needs a little love, that's one of my favorite things to help business owners dial in! Want to be the go-to option in your industry? First, you have to be FOUND. Five Steps to being Found First.
2026/10/05
Want to be the go-to option in your industry? First, you have to be FOUND. We talk a lot about visibility, but visibility isn't about posting more, being everywhere, or doing all the things. It's about making sure that when someone is actively looking for what you do, your business has the right signals in place to show up. Recently, I taught a workshop around my visibility framework: Be Found. Be Liked. Be Trusted. And today's episode is all about that very first piece: FOUND. I'm walking you through the first five steps I look at when evaluating a business's visibility, from how your business appears in search to whether Google, AI platforms, and your potential customers are getting a clear and consistent picture of who you are, what you do, and where you do it. Because your website can't be saying one thing while your Google Business Profile says another and your social platforms tell a completely different story. Consistency builds clarity. Clarity builds trust. And it starts with being found. Think of today's episode as a mini visibility checkup you can do right alongside me. And if you go through these five steps and think, “Okay, Melissa…I think I need another set of eyes on this,” that's exactly what my Visibility Audit is for. I'll take a fresh look at your digital footprint, identify what's working, what's disconnected, and where you're missing opportunities to be found, and give you clear next steps for what to fix. 🎧 Listen now and start with the first five steps to becoming found, liked, and trusted first. If this episode helps you, I'd be so grateful if you'd follow The Visibility Podcast and leave a review on Apple Podcasts. Those reviews make my day, and help more business owners find the show, too. Why Customers Choose You: Consumer Psychology, AI & Better Marketing with Adam Ortman
2026/09/28
Why Customers Choose You: Consumer Psychology, AI & Better Marketing with Adam Ortman Why does someone choose your studio, practice, or service business over the one down the street? It might not be because you're better. It might be because you've done a better job understanding what matters to them. In this episode of The Visibility Podcast, I'm joined by Adam Ortman, consumer psychologist, marketing author, and founder and CEO of Kinetic319. Adam has a master's degree in advertising and consumer psychology and has worked with brands including Nike, American Express, Kellogg, UnitedHealth Group, and Textron. But we're taking all of that big-brand marketing knowledge and bringing it straight to the local service-based business owner. Because one of the biggest takeaways from this conversation is something we hear all the time—but don't always take the time to actually DO: Know your customer. Really know them. Not just their age, income, or zip code. What motivates them to finally take action? What's their priority right now? What do they need to see or hear before they trust you enough to buy? Adam walks us through three important pieces of consumer decision-making: motivation, priority, and social proof, and shares practical ways small business owners can start gathering this information from their own customers. We also dig into: Why people choose one local business over anotherHow to become the obvious, go-to option in your communityThe difference between a visibility problem and a trust or conversion problemWhy talking to your existing customers may be some of your best marketing researchHow consumer psychology should influence your messagingThe role reviews and social proof play in the buying decisionHow AI is changing the way consumers search for and choose businessesWhy getting more eyeballs isn't always the answerWhat small businesses can learn from the way major brands approach marketingAnd here's a little bonus Adam dropped after we stopped recording: local service businesses should be paying attention to YouTube advertising. We talk about why its potentially low cost and ability to target a tight geographic area could make it an interesting visibility opportunity for local businesses. This conversation is a great reminder that good marketing doesn't always start with another Reel, platform, ad, or piece of content. It starts with understanding the human being on the other side of it.Adam Ortman on LinkedINKinetic319 on YouTubeKinetic319 on LinkedINGET MOVING package for small businesses that don't have a NIKE budget.  Ready to see what your customers see? You’re doing the marketing. You have the website. The socials. The Google Business Profile. You’re showing up. But is everything actually pointing to the same thing? Can people quickly understand who you are, what you’re known for, and why they should trust you? That’s exactly what I look for in my $197 Visibility Audit. I’ll put fresh eyes on your digital footprint: your website, Google presence, and social platforms, and show you where the gaps are, what may be creating confusion, and where your biggest opportunities are to become the GO-TO in your industry. Built to Weather the Storm: Business, Faith & Legacy with Bill Derrick
2026/09/22
As business owners, we're used to figuring things out. Something isn't working? We change the strategy.Revenue is down? We look at the numbers. There's a problem? We find someone who knows the answer. But what happens when there isn't an answer? What happens when you're facing a storm in your business—or your life—that no amount of strategy, hard work, or Googling can fix? Today's episode of The Visibility Podcast is a little different. I'm sitting down with Bill Derrick, President of Derrick Companies in New Richmond, Wisconsin, and author of Restored by the Storm: Navigating Through Life's Unexpected Challenges. Bill has more than 50 years of experience in the construction industry and has spent the majority of his career leading Derrick Companies. In 2008, Bill helped lead the company through one of the most devastating economic downturns since the Great Depression. For five years, they navigated an incredibly difficult business climate, not knowing exactly how—or if—they would come through it. And just as the storm began to clear, Bill and his family were hit with another one. Bill was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, an incurable blood cancer. Today, Bill can look back at these seasons with a perspective he couldn't possibly have had while living through them. And that's what we talk about. This isn't an episode filled with five-step strategies or another list of things you need to do. It's a conversation about: Leading a business when you don't have all the answersWhat the 2008 recession taught Bill about leadership and perseveranceWalking through fear and uncertainty when the outcome is beyond your controlFaith and learning to trust when you can't understand why something is happeningHow life's hardest storms can change the way we lead and liveBuilding a business and reputation that lasts for generationsSuccession and what it means to hand something you've built to the next generationHow Bill's definition of success has changed after more than 50 years in businessFinding meaning and purpose in seasons you never would have chosenThe legacy we leave behind,  not just through our businesses, but through the people we becomeWe do talk openly about faith in this episode. I'm not here to preach or tell you what you should believe. But faith plays an important role in my own life, and I've experienced seasons when I've been brought to my knees asking questions I couldn't answer. Sometimes we don't get to understand the why while we're standing in the middle of the storm. Sometimes that understanding comes much, much later. And sometimes leadership isn't about having the answer. Sometimes it's about continuing to show up, leaning on the people around you, trusting, and taking the next right step—even when you can't see where it's leading. Whether you're in a beautiful season of business right now or navigating a storm of your own, I hope you'll make some space for this conversation. The Problem SEO Can’t Fix: Why People Aren’t Choosing You
2026/09/14
This may be one of my most passionate solo episodes yet because we're talking about something I LOVE: messaging. I know. “Messaging” sounds like such a generic marketing word. But messaging is FULLY loaded. It can take your marketing from meh to WOW. From scroll past to stop. From drive right by to pull over. From “that's nice” to “OMG, this is exactly what I've been looking for.” And sometimes, that shift comes from surprisingly small tweaks. Recently, I started working with a business owner who had invested in a beautiful new website and SEO. Her numbers showed that website traffic was increasing. But she told me: “Melissa, my phone isn't ringing.” She'd tried the website. Postcards. Social media. Networking. She was doing the things and getting increasingly frustrated that none of it seemed to be translating into leads. Here's the thing: Her SEO may have been doing exactly what it was supposed to do. It was getting people there. But getting found and getting chosen are two different things. In this episode, we're breaking down the different layers of marketing: how SEO and keywords help you get found, why more traffic doesn't automatically mean more customers, how to recognize a potential messaging problem, and why simply putting the same copy on MORE marketing channels won't fix a message that isn't connecting. Because more visibility isn't always the answer. Sometimes you need to make sure what you're saying actually makes the right person stop and say, “YES. That's for me.” And THIS is my sweet spot. If you've been doing all the marketing: website, Google, social, postcards, networking, signs, and wondering “Why am I working this hard for so little?” this episode is for you. You Don’t Need to Push Harder: Creating Capacity in Your Business with Lissy Donovan
2026/08/31
You Don’t Need to Push Harder: Creating Capacity in Your Business with Lissy Donovan What if the thing holding your business back isn't your strategy? What if you simply don't have the capacity to implement it? Think about how many business owners start their day: wake up, grab the phone, check the email, answer the DMs, scroll for a minute, solve a problem, and we're working before our feet even hit the floor. Then the actual day begins. Clients need us. Employees need us. There are decisions to make, fires to put out, services to deliver—and somewhere in there, we're also supposed to find the time and energy to actually grow the business. In this episode of The Visibility Podcast, I'm joined by Lissy Donovan, business strategist, ICF PCC coach, and Certified Pumpkin Plan Strategist who specializes in working with therapists, physical therapists, medical practice owners, and other service-based business owners. Lissy has spent 16 years working with small business owners and eight years coaching around burnout recovery and capacity building. She's helped business owners grow 3–10x while creating businesses that don't require them to remain the single point of failure. And today, we're talking about capacity. Not another productivity hack. Not “drink more water.” Not “just hire someone.” We're talking about what it actually takes to create enough space—in your life AND your business—to think, make better decisions, implement the strategy, and build something that doesn't require every ounce of you. In this episode, we talk about: How your capacity as a human directly affects your capacity as a business ownerWhy constantly operating in reactive mode makes it difficult to growThe hidden cost of starting your day immediately responding to everyone elseWhat rest actually looks like for an entrepreneurWhy creating more capacity requires intentional actionThe uncomfortable truth that creating capacity may take MORE time and effort upfrontWhy waiting for business to “calm down” usually doesn't workHow to start creating space to work on your business instead of constantly working in itWhat happens when the owner becomes the single point of failureHow better capacity can lead to better strategy, better decisions, and ultimately a stronger businessHere's the truth: You probably aren't going to wake up one morning and magically have more time. Your inbox isn't going to empty itself. Your clients aren't going to stop needing you. And your calendar isn't suddenly going to hand you three uninterrupted hours to figure out the future of your business. At some point, we have to intentionally create that space. And Lissy gives us some fantastic places to start.https://www.lissydonovan.com/Join the newsletterYouTubeInstagram Want to strengthen your local visibility with LESS of your capacity? Simple Marketing Strategies We Forget When Business Gets Busy
2026/08/24
A few years ago, someone told me I needed to stop looking for the next big marketing strategy and go back to the basics and hustle. And you guys...I was offended. 😂 I'd been in business for years. Surely I had graduated from signs, free classes, community events, partnerships, and what I lovingly call “duct-tape marketing.” Turns out? I hadn't. And neither have you. In this solo episode of The Visibility Podcast, we're going back to Marketing 101 and talking about the simple visibility strategies established business owners sometimes overlook because we're so busy trying to figure out the next big thing. This whole episode was sparked by something ridiculously simple: A sign. After seeing some great signage at a local event—and then another example inside my coaching community—I started wondering whether I was still doing the basics inside my own dance studio. So this weekend, I created new signs for our highly visible corner: FIRST CLASS FREE. CLASSES ENROLLING NOW. Nothing fancy. No funnel. No algorithm. No complicated strategy. Just a reminder to the thousands of people driving past our studio every week that we're here—and we have something for them. In this episode, we're talking about: Why established businesses shouldn't abandon the marketing tactics that helped them growHow customers begin to tune out things they see every dayWhy changing your physical signage can grab attention againThe power of community events, partnerships, free classes, referrals, flyers, QR codes, and yes—even ridiculous costumesWhy saying something 700 times doesn't mean your customer has heard it 700 timesThe importance of continuing to market to new people entering your communityHow to identify the simple marketing strategies you've stopped doingWhy more platforms don't necessarily equal better visibilityWhat to look for when you're doing “all the things” but your marketing still isn't workingAnd that last one is important. Because if you're thinking, “Melissa, I AM doing the basics. I'm showing up everywhere, and something still isn't clicking,” you may have a different problem. Your website might be great. Your Instagram might be great. Your Google Business Profile might be great. But are they all saying the same thing? Can someone quickly understand who you are, what you're known for, what you want them to do next—and why they should trust you? That's exactly what I look for inside my Visibility Audit. I'll go through your digital footprint with a fine-tooth comb and give you a recorded walkthrough of what I see: what's working, what's confusing, what's disconnected, and where your biggest visibility opportunities might be. Because sometimes you don't need MORE marketing. You need the marketing you're already doing to work together. Grab your Visibility Audit through the link in the show notes. And in the meantime, here's your challenge: What's one ridiculously simple thing you could do this week to help one more person in your community notice your business? Put up the sign. Ask for the referral. Make the connection. Teach the class. Show up. Because you're never too big for the basics. Love today’s podcast? 🙌 Take a screenshot and share it to your IG stories. From Scroll to Studio: Turning Instagram Visibility Into Enrollments with Katelyn Rhoades
2026/08/18
If you’re posting on Instagram because you know your studio should be there—but you’re not quite sure whether all that posting is actually helping you get seen, build trust, or increase enrollment, this episode is for you. I’m joined by Katelyn Rhoades, Forbes-featured entrepreneur, founder and CEO of Enfluence Marketing Studio, and host of the top-ranked podcast Call Her Creator. Katelyn has grown a community of more than 350,000, built a seven-figure business from scratch, and partnered with brands including Adobe and Meta. But this conversation isn't about becoming an influencer. It's about using Instagram to grow a local studio business. We talk about what studio owners should actually be posting, how to create content that reaches the right people in your community, and why you don't have to become a full-time content creator—or even love talking to the camera—to make Instagram work for your business. And then I put Katelyn on the spot. I gave her a real-world scenario: You're a dance studio owner heading into enrollment season. What would you do on Instagram to get more students through the door? What followed was basically a mini masterclass. In this episode, we talk about: How local businesses should think differently about InstagramWhat to post when enrollment is your goalHow to create content for the people who are actually likely to buyTalking-head videos vs. Reels vs. graphics, and where each fitsWhy you don't need a massive following to make Instagram valuableHow to turn visibility into trust and, ultimately, enrollmentPractical content ideas you can start using immediatelyIf your studio is doing great work but not enough people know about it yet, this conversation will give you some incredibly practical ways to change that. The Day I Realized My Business Didn't Need Me
2026/08/11
What if one of the greatest signs of success is realizing your business doesn't need you for everything anymore? At our recent Dancing House Open House, I looked around and realized something: my team had it covered. They were answering questions, connecting with families, talking confidently about what makes our studio different—and genuinely proud of the business they represent. Nobody needed me. And instead of feeling unnecessary, I felt free. In this episode of The Visibility Podcast, we're talking about what it really takes to move from being the person who does everything to building a business that can thrive without depending on you for every decision, problem, and task. We also dig into the dangerous "get" mindset: I'll hire when I get more clients. I'll delegate when I get more time. I'll step back when I get more revenue. Sometimes the thing you're waiting to "get" requires you to make the decision first. And maybe success isn't more students, more locations, more employees or more revenue. Maybe success is building a profitable business that serves people beautifully and gives you a life. If you're feeling stuck inside the business you created, take my free Sweet Spot Assessment. In about five minutes, you'll get a bird's-eye view of what's working, where you're getting stuck, and your greatest opportunity for growth. And if you want help unpacking what you discover, book a complimentary Clarity Call with me. One question to take with you from this episode: Where are you still acting like an employee inside the business you built? You're Waiting for Clarity... Backwards
2026/08/03
What if the clarity you're waiting for doesn't come before the decision... What if it comes because of it? In this deeply personal episode, I'm sharing some of the biggest decisions of my life. From leaving for New York at 18, to walking away from a marriage, rebuilding my business after hitting rock bottom, saying yes to a dream property I had no idea how I could afford, and ultimately finding the love I had been praying for. None of those moments came with certainty. None came with a roadmap. They all began the same way: I decided. If you've been waiting for more confidence, more proof, or more certainty before taking your next step, this episode is for you. We'll talk about why indecision keeps us stuck, how to recognize the difference between fear and true knowing, and why the evidence almost always comes after the decision. In this episode, you'll discover: Why waiting for clarity might be keeping you stuck. The difference between wanting something and deciding something. How to recognize the quiet voice of "knowing" over the loud voice of fear. Why every meaningful change in your life starts with one decision. How to identify your own next right step.A Question to Reflect On What decision have you already made... but you keep pretending you haven't? Sit with that question. Notice what keeps coming back. Sometimes the answer isn't louder. It's quieter. And it brings peace. Ready for Your Next Right Step? If you're standing at a crossroads, in your business, your relationships, your leadership, or simply wondering what's next—I would love to help. I offer complimentary 45-minute Clarity Calls designed to help you cut through the noise, uncover what's really keeping you stuck, and leave with your next right step. 👉 Grab your complimentary Clarity Call. Before your business grows... your relationships do.
2026/07/27
What if the next breakthrough in your business isn't another marketing strategy... but another conversation? As entrepreneurs, it's easy to believe that growth comes from doing more, posting more, emailing more, tweaking our website, or spending another afternoon behind the computer. But what if the very thing your business needs most isn't another hour at your desk? In this episode, Melissa shares a powerful lesson inspired by Brian Buffini's phrase, "Take the self out of self-employed," and explores why the most successful businesses aren't built in isolation, they're built through genuine relationships. Drawing from two recent experiences: hosting the inaugural Above the Barre dance educator conference and performing in a community dance production—Melissa reflects on where the real magic happens. Spoiler alert: it's rarely on the stage. It's in the conversations between the sessions, backstage, over coffee, and around the table. You'll also hear the story of a coaching client who came looking for more leads but left with something much more valuable: a fresh vision for growing her business by creating meaningful experiences instead of chasing more marketing tactics. In this episode, you'll discover: Why relationships are still your greatest business strategyHow meaningful conversations create opportunities algorithms never canWhy getting out from behind your computer may be the best marketing move you make this yearHow hosting a small event can attract your ideal clientsThe mindset shift from "I need more leads" to "I need more connection"If you've been feeling stuck, isolated, or like you're doing all the things without seeing the results you want, this episode is your reminder that business has always been, and always will be, about people. Realtors: If AI and Google Can't Figure Out Who You Are, Neither Can Your Clients
2026/07/21
Is your brand sending one clear message... or five different ones? If you've ever felt like your marketing isn't working, your website isn't converting, or Google and AI don't seem to understand what you do, this episode is for you. In this episode of The Visibility Podcast, Melissa introduces the first pillar of her Consistency Framework: Brand Consistency. Most business owners think they have a visibility problem, when in reality, they have a consistency problem. Your business name, logo, colors, tagline, website, and primary offer all work together to tell Google, AI, and your ideal clients exactly who you are and why they should choose you. When those pieces aren't aligned, your message becomes confusing, and confused businesses don't get found. Melissa also shares the four areas of consistency every business owner should evaluate: Brand Consistency – Is your name, visual identity, tagline, and core offer consistent everywhere?Business Logistics – Are your address, phone number, email, website, and business information accurate and matching across every platform?Messaging Consistency – Does your messaging clearly communicate who you serve, what you do, and why you're different?Marketing Consistency – Are you showing up regularly with valuable content? The truth? Most entrepreneurs spend all their energy trying to post more content while overlooking the first three areas that make their marketing effective in the first place. If you're ready to become the go-to option in your community, start by making sure your brand tells one clear, consistent story. In this episode, you'll learn: Why brand consistency matters more than you thinkThe four pillars of a consistent marketing strategyCommon branding mistakes entrepreneurs makeHow inconsistency hurts your visibility with Google and AIA simple audit you can do today to strengthen your online presenceReady to take the next step?
