UPO Live On Air Ep. 85- The October Lull: What Science Says About Deer Movement
2026/10/21
The October Lull: Fact, Fiction, or Just Changing Deer Behavior? Every October, deer hunters across the country start talking about the dreaded "October Lull." Trail camera pictures slow down, daylight buck sightings become scarce, and suddenly it seems like every mature buck in the woods has disappeared. But is the October Lull actually real, or have hunters been misunderstanding deer behavior for decades? In this episode of Under Pressure Outdoors, we're digging into the science behind the October Lull and separating hunting camp folklore from what research actually tells us about whitetail movement. We'll explore how hunting pressure, changing food sources, seasonal behavior, and shifting weather patterns influence deer activity. We'll also examine whether cold fronts and changes in barometric pressure really get deer on their feet or if there's more to the story. Are deer actually moving less, or are they simply moving where hunters aren't looking? Whether you're chasing whitetails in the big timber of the North or the thick swamps and pine woods of the South, this episode might change the way you approach October hunting. Don't let the October Lull fool you. The deer haven't disappeared! Ep. 353- Coffee, Camouflage & Conservation | Flyway Brew Co.
2026/10/19
Coffee, Hunting, and Conservation with Flyway Brew Co. What do a good cup of coffee and a passion for the outdoors have in common? More than you might think. This week on the Under Pressure Outdoors Podcast, we’re joined by the folks behind Flyway Brew Co. to talk about the intersection of hunting, conservation, coffee, and the outdoor lifestyle. We dig into the story behind Flyway Brew Co., the passion that drives their business, and how they’ve brought together two things that many hunters know go hand in hand: early mornings in the outdoors and a hot cup of coffee. From the traditions that connect outdoorsmen to the next generation of hunters, this conversation is about more than what’s in your coffee cup. It’s about the people, experiences, and shared passions that make the hunting community what it is. Whether you’re sitting in a deer stand, waiting on daylight in a duck blind, or just enjoying your morning coffee, pull up a chair and join us for another episode of the Under Pressure Outdoors Podcast! UPO Live On AIr Ep. 84- Are Hunters Ruining Deer Hunting?
2026/10/14
Are Hunters Ruining Deer Hunting? What if the biggest threat to the future of deer hunting isn't anti-hunters, predators, or government regulations? What if it's us? From trophy obsession and social media influence to unrealistic expectations and the growing divide within the hunting community, hunters may be doing more damage to the traditions we love than we're willing to admit. In this episode of Under Pressure Outdoors, we're taking a hard look at how hunting culture has changed, the pressures we've created for ourselves, and whether our own attitudes and actions are pushing deer hunting in the wrong direction. Are we preserving the traditions that brought us into the woods, or are we slowly destroying them? It's a conversation every deer hunter needs to hear, whether you agree with us or not. Listen in, share your thoughts, and ask yourself one question: Is it our fault? Ep. 352- The BIggest MIstake Deer Hunters Are Making | Kip Adams
2026/10/12
Are Deer Hunters Getting It Wrong? What if one of the biggest problems facing whitetail deer management isn't that we're killing too many deer, but that we're not killing enough? This week on Under Pressure Outdoors, we're joined by Kip Adams of the National Deer Association to take a hard look at the state of America's whitetail herd and what the latest research is telling us. Kip makes a bold statement: We're not harvesting enough does. But what does that mean for deer populations, hunting opportunities, and the future of whitetail management? We dig into deer population trends, buck age structure, antlerless harvest, habitat management, disease, and the growing disconnect between what hunters believe and what wildlife science actually tells us. Whether you're managing a hunting property, chasing mature bucks, or simply trying to understand what's happening in your local deer woods, this conversation might challenge everything you thought you knew about deer management. Are we managing deer for healthier herds, or are we letting hunting traditions get in the way of good science? Tune in and decide for yourself. Under Pressure Outdoors — Real Conversations. UPO Live On AIr Ep. 83- Fred Bear, Poison Arrows & Hunting's Outlawded Past
2026/10/07
There was a time when poison-tipped arrows weren’t some bizarre chapter from hunting history—they were legal hunting equipment. And one of the biggest names ever to pick up a bow, Fred Bear himself, experimented with them. That got me thinking: hunting has always evolved alongside technology, and some of the things hunters once considered completely acceptable would get you a ticket—or a whole lot worse—today. So on this episode of Under Pressure Outdoors, we’re digging into some of hunting’s outlawed past. From poison arrows and other forgotten methods to the changing ideas of fair chase and ethics, we’re looking at where we’ve been, why the rules changed, and what ultimately pushed some of these practices out of the hunting world. But there’s a bigger question behind all of it. If yesterday’s cutting-edge hunting technology can become tomorrow’s unethical or illegal practice…what are we using today that hunters 50 years from now might look back on the exact same way? Ep. 351- Who’s Fighting for Hunters? Inside the Fight to Protect Hunting Rights | Sportsmen's Alliance
2026/10/05
Hunters and anglers have more at stake than just what happens in the woods. This week on Under Pressure Outdoors, we sit down with the Sportsmen’s Alliance to talk about the battles being fought over hunting, fishing, trapping, and conservation across the country—and why sportsmen need to be paying attention. We dig into the threats facing our outdoor traditions, how anti-hunting efforts can show up in legislation and at the ballot box, and the work being done behind the scenes to protect the opportunities generations of Americans have enjoyed. Whether you hunt every weekend of the season or simply believe these traditions should still be available to the next generation, this is a conversation worth hearing. Because protecting hunting isn't just about protecting what we do today—it's about making sure there's still something left to pass on tomorrow. UPO Live On Air Ep.82- One Mistake
2026/09/30
When most people hear the words “hunting accident,” their mind immediately goes to a firearm—and while hunting remains an incredibly safe activity overall, one mistake in the field can have permanent consequences. This week on Under Pressure Outdoors, we’re taking a closer look at hunting-related accidents, with a focus on firearm incidents and the role hunter education has played in making the woods safer. We dig into the statistics, some of the most common causes of firearm-related hunting accidents, and the recent incidents that remind us why the basic rules of firearm safety can never become an afterthought. Whether you’ve been hunting for 30 years or you’re heading into the woods for your first season, safety isn’t something you graduate from. Experience doesn’t make us immune to mistakes—and sometimes all it takes is one. Ep. 350 Campfire Cooking with Cowboy Kent Rollins
2026/09/28
There’s something about good food cooked over an open fire that just seems to bring people together. This week, we’re joined by legendary cowboy cook Kent Rollins for a conversation about camp cooking, cast iron, cowboy culture, and the traditions that have kept people gathered around the fire for generations. Kent shares stories from a lifetime spent cooking outdoors, what he’s learned from feeding working cowboys and crowds across the country, and why keeping these old-school cooking skills alive still matters today. We also talk about his Outdoor Channel show Cast Iron Cowboy, the simplicity of cooking with fire and cast iron, and why sometimes the best meals don’t require a fancy kitchen—just good ingredients, a hot fire, and good company. Whether you’re cooking at deer camp, over a backyard fire, or just appreciate the traditions that connect food and the outdoors, this is one you’ll want to sit down and enjoy. UPO Live On Air Ep. 81- Opening Weekend Reality Check!
2026/09/23
Opening weekend has officially come and gone, and after months of scouting, hanging stands, checking cameras, shooting bows, buying gear, watching the weather and convincing ourselves that THIS was finally going to be the year everything came together… reality has officially entered the chat. Because opening weekend has a funny way of reminding you that deer don’t care about your plans, ducks apparently didn’t get the memo about where they were supposed to be, the weather forecast is more of a suggestion, and something you swore you packed is probably still sitting on the kitchen counter. But that’s hunting. Tonight we’re doing an opening weekend reality check. We’re talking about what went right, what went wrong, what we learned, and all those little things you completely forgot about during the off-season until you were standing in the woods wishing you’d remembered them. So whether you punched a tag, missed an opportunity, got completely skunked, or just enjoyed finally being back out there, grab a drink, settle in, and let’s talk about opening weekend. Ep. 349- Hunt Smarter With Racklog
2026/09/21
There’s no shortage of hunting apps out there today. We’ve got mapping apps, weather apps, trail camera apps, and about a dozen different ways to drop a pin on a map. But what happens when you start bringing all of that information together and actually use it to help make better hunting decisions? This week, I sat down with Matthew Olson, the creator of RackLog, a whitetail-focused hunting app built around helping hunters better understand the information they’re already collecting in the woods. Matthew and I talk about where the idea for RackLog came from, what separates it from some of the bigger hunting apps already on the market, and some of the tools they’ve built into it—including Buck Brain, RackScan, trail camera management, target buck tracking, and the ability to factor things like habitat, wind, thermals, weather, and your own hunting history into the decision-making process. We also get into Matthew’s story of building an app from the ground up while serving Active Duty in the Army, some of the lessons he’s learned since launching RackLog, and where he hopes to take the platform in the future. And if you want to check RackLog out for yourself, Matthew hooked up the Under Pressure Outdoors community with a couple of promo codes. Use UPO30 for a monthly subscription or UPO30YEAR for a yearly subscription, and you’ll get one month of RackLog Premium access free. So whether you’re managing a piece of private ground, grinding it out on public land, or you’re just looking for a better way to organize all the information you collect throughout deer season, this is a good one. UPO Live On Air Ep. 80- You Might Be A Southern Hunter If...
2026/09/16
You might be a Southern hunter if your truck has more hunting gear than groceries, you’ve ever judged the weather by whether the mosquitoes are flying, or somebody in your hunting camp has a piece of equipment held together with duct tape, baling wire, and pure determination. This week on Under Pressure Outdoors, we’re keeping things light and having a little fun with the habits, traditions, questionable decisions, and unwritten rules that make hunting in the South what it is. From deer camps and dog boxes to gas-station breakfasts, opening-day rituals, hand-me-down hunting gear, and those stories that somehow get better every single time they’re told, we’re talking about the things Southern hunters immediately recognize—even if we don’t always want to admit they apply to us. So grab a cold drink, pull up a camp chair, and see how many times you catch yourself saying, “Yep… I’ve done that.” You might be a Southern hunter if… Deep Roots Rifles USE CODE UPO10 FOR 10% OFF Under Pressure Outdoors underpressureoutdoors Official: TikTok, Instagram, Facebook | Linktree Under Pressure Outdoors Podcast | By Hunters For Hunters | Patreon
Ep. 348- Florida Woods & Old Friends with Cameron Gordon
2026/09/14
This week on Under Pressure Outdoors, we’re catching up with longtime friend of the show Cameron Gordon. We originally met Cameron through the podcast, and over the years he’s joined us for small-game hunts, events, and plenty of good times in the outdoors. He’s a Florida native, a small-game-hunting fool, and one of those guys who simply loves spending time in the woods. It had been a while since we’d had the chance to sit down together, so this episode is less of a formal interview and more of two friends catching up. We swap hunting stories, talk about small game, Florida’s outdoors, and plenty of other things that come up when a couple of outdoorsmen get together. Sometimes the best conversations don’t need an agenda. Pull up a chair and join us for a laid-back conversation with our good friend Cameron Gordon. UPO Live On AIr Ep.79- The Death Of The Hunting Camp
2026/09/09
There was a time when hunting season didn’t just mean opening morning. It meant hunting camp. It meant an old camper, a little cabin, or maybe just a wall tent somewhere back in the woods. It meant a pot of coffee that had been sitting on the stove way too long, somebody telling the same story you’d already heard a hundred times, wet boots drying by the fire, and a group of people sitting around at the end of the day arguing about where the deer went. And somewhere along the way, it feels like we’ve started losing that. Hunting has changed. We’ve got better gear, better information, better technology, and probably more ways than ever to become successful in the woods. But as hunting has become more efficient, more individual, and more focused on the outcome, I wonder if we’ve sacrificed some of the things that made hunting special in the first place. Because hunting camp was never really about the camp. It was where kids learned from their dads and granddads. Where friendships were built. Where stories became traditions, and traditions got handed down to the next generation. Half the memories we carry from hunting season didn’t happen in a tree stand at all—they happened back at camp. So tonight, we’re talking about the death of the hunting camp—why it seems to be disappearing, what we might be losing along with it, and whether there’s still time for our generation to keep that tradition alive. Ep. 347- Old Camo, New Obsession: Camoretro
2026/09/07
There was a time when hunting camo had character. The patterns were bold, the colors were unmistakable, and seeing an old jacket hanging in the back of a closet could instantly take you back to deer camp. This week, I’m joined by Logan from Camo Retro to talk about bringing that old-school hunting style back to life. We dive into the history and nostalgia behind classic camouflage patterns, how hunting apparel has changed over the years, and what inspired Camo Retro to build a brand around preserving a piece of hunting culture that a lot of us grew up with. We also get into the business side of bringing vintage-inspired camo back to a modern audience, why these old patterns still resonate with hunters today, and how something as simple as camouflage can connect generations of outdoorsmen. If you grew up hunting in old-school camo—or inherited some of it from your dad or granddad—this episode is going to bring back some memories. Grab a seat at camp and join us for a conversation about camouflage, nostalgia, hunting culture, and keeping the old-school spirit alive. UPO Live On Air Ep. 78- The TIme We Almost Put Hippos In Louisiana
2026/09/02
There are a lot of strange chapters in American history, but this one might be near the top of the list. At one point in the early 1900s, there was a legitimate proposal to import hippopotamuses from Africa, turn them loose in the swamps and bayous of Louisiana, and eventually put hippo meat on American dinner tables. And somehow, that’s not even the strangest part of the story. The idea was supposed to solve multiple problems at once: provide a new source of meat for a growing country, make use of otherwise unproductive wetlands, and even help deal with an invasive aquatic plant that was choking waterways across the South. It sounds like something somebody made up after a few drinks, but the proposal made it all the way to the United States Congress and had some surprisingly serious people behind it. So this week, we’re digging into the bizarre true story of how America almost filled the Louisiana bayous with hippos—and how close “lake cow bacon” came to becoming an American food.
