BY HOOK OR BY CROOK (10.20.26): The thin line between wins and losses in NFL Week 6, and a CLV bonfire in College Football
2026/10/20
In this week’s episode of THE WINDOW: Sports betting podcast, Matt Russell (@mrussauthentic) looks back at a profitable Week 6 in the NFL, starting with a Monday Night Football game that acted as a reminder that even dumb teams, doing dumb things, can still cover point spreads against an undefeated team, if the line is high enough.  Why Commanders-49ers was a microcosm for much of went on during Sunday, starting with the point spread evaluation on the Texans-Jaguars, to the Titans pulling off a win over the Colts, and why you never know what you’re going to get with teams from the top (Rams), middle (Cowboys), and bottom (Saints) of the NFL.  Maybe you missed it? The NFL Betting Market “Glimpse” after Week 5 Thursday Night Football: Seahawks-Broncos NFL Week 6: Survivor contest outlook NFL Week 6 betting: “The Sunday Best” NFL Week 6 props: “The Player Prop Express” Monday Night Football: Commanders-49ers College Football betting: The big games for Week 7 College Football betting: The “Saturday 7” for Week 7 Then Matt looks back at how copious closing line value didn’t pay off in Ohio State-Indiana, Georgia State-James Madison, Kansas-Kansas State, and Wisconsin-UCLA, in Week 7 of college football. Plus, the Heisman Report has a buy-low bet worth adding to protect a change in the situation for Jeremiah Smith, and another handful of “secret” podcast-only bets for the weeknight games in college football.  It’s time to head to THE WINDOW, let’s go!
BRAIN-DEAD ZOMBIE COACHES ATTACK (10.13.26): NFL coaching mishaps confuse, College Football is on a run, and much more!
2026/10/13
In this week’s episode of THE WINDOW: Sports betting podcast, Matt Russell (@mrussauthentic) looks back at a weekend of football loaded with head coaching mistakes that changed the outlook for almost every game, with a more than a few kicker misses to boot. The Monday-nighter exceeded expectations, and a possible quasi-sweep of the player props, touchdowns, and the side got derailed. Why BOTH Sean McVay and Joe Brady struggled with how to manage the game.  It was the end of a week of football that started with people wondering if Todd Bowles was trying to tank the Bucs’ upset of the Cowboys (that gashed Survivor contests), continued with Nick Sirianni and Liam Coen clunking their heads together in England, and saw the biggest of fiascos go down in Washington.  Matt wonders how we’re supposed to handicap games when everything seems to get undermined when it comes time to close out games.  Maybe you missed it? The NFL Betting Market “Glimpse” after Week 5 Thursday Night Football: Buccaneers-Cowboys NFL Week 5: Survivor contest outlook (free for Yahoo! Sports) NFL Week 5 betting: “The Sunday Best” NFL Week 5 player props: “The Player Prop Express” Monday Night Football: Bills-Rams (free for Yahoo! Sports) College Football betting: The big games for Week 6 (free for Yahoo! Sports) College Football betting: The “Saturday 7” for Week 6 Week 6 in college football started out with the slow creep up a 7-0 run in the “secret” podcast-only plays, and Matt has five more for Week 7. Plus, a second-straight RUMP got home on an otherwise middling Saturday.  Plus, Jeremiah Smith’s stats at the halfway point of the college football season are on pace for the possibility of a 100/2000/20 season.  It’s time to head to THE WINDOW, let’s go!
BE-WITCHING HOUR MADNESS (10.6.26): NFL endgame chaos in Week 4, College Football cruising, and staying ready to react
2026/10/06
In this week’s episode of THE WINDOW: Sports betting podcast, Matt Russell (@mrussauthentic) looks back at Week 4 in the NFL in “Right or Wrong,” as seemingly every point spread came down to a final play.  The market led to a change of heart for Monday night, and a rare primetime total Why betting so many anytime touchdowns in a low-total game on Thursday night would have been right even if so many of them hadn’t hit The Colts and Commanders reminded bettors that you have to ask yourself: Is this what I signed up for? Can I reasonably get out of this? If you were a contrarian and backed the Eagles, Patriots, and Chargers, you still only went 1-1-1 on a wacky Sunday Which teams have been fools gold to start the season, and who is just “good?” Maybe you missed it? The NFL Betting Market “Glimpse” after Week 3 Thursday Night Football: Steelers-Browns NFL Week 4: Survivor contest outlook NFL Week 4 betting: “The Sunday Best” NFL Week 4 props: “The Player Prop Express” Monday Night Football: Falcons-Saints College Football betting: The big games for Week 5 College Football betting: The “Saturday 7” for Week 5 Then Matt looks back at an awesome Saturday for THE WINDOW in College Football, where the “Saturday 7” went 5-1-1, the RUMP cashed at 3-2, and we won on the three biggest games of the day. Plus, why the Heisman Trophy Report will hopefully very boring this season.
CASE STUDY (9.29.26): NFL Week 3 margins, College Football excels, and the NHL starts tonight!?!
2026/09/29
In this week’s episode of THE WINDOW: Sports betting podcast, Matt Russell (@mrussauthentic) looks back at Week 3 in the NFL with “Right or Wrong,” featuring a new segment, the “George Costanza: Was that wrong?” Game(s) of the Week.  The Patriots, 49ers, and Saints all lead the way there, but bets on the Chargers and Jets probably deserved better. Meanwhile, the Seahawks-Commanders game is the reason for a mea culpa, as it was a missed opportunity for a bet that actually won.  Matt goes over the highs of the Broncos win over the Rams, but why the Eagles were a team he was dying to fade — right up until the point where the Bears were starting a 38-year-old quarterback who had started one NFL game in five years.  Maybe you missed it? The NFL Betting Market “Glimpse” after Week 2 Thursday Night Football: Falcons-Rams NFL Week 3: Survivor contest outlook NFL Week 3 betting: “The Sunday Best” NFL Week 3 props: “The Player Prop Express” Monday Night Football: Eagles-Bears College Football betting: The big games for Week 4 College Football betting: The “Saturday 7” for Week 4 Then Matt looks back at another strong Week 4 in College Football with a 10-6 effort across the “Saturday 7,” the free bets for the big games — available for Yahoo! Sports, and on the podcast. Plus, last week’s recommendation to get down on Jeremiah Smith (+1050) for the Heisman Trophy has already increased in equity, as he’s the new favorite on the betting board.  Finally, the NHL season starts tonight! 🚨… The 2026-‘27 NHL market tracker is available to all paid subscribers to THE WINDOW For a description on how to use the NHL market tracker and the target moneylines for each side of every game this season, and the link to the sheet, click here: THE WINDOW’s NHL BETTING MARKET TRACKER It’s time to head to THE WINDOW, let’s go!
LIGHTNING CRASH-OUT (9.22.26): The Buccaneers blow it, NFL Week 2 confusion, and a strong Week 3 in the CFB
2026/09/22
In this week’s episode of THE WINDOW: Sports betting podcast, Matt Russell (@mrussauthentic) looks back at Week 2 in the NFL with “Right or Wrong,” featuring the Buccaneers’ prolonged upset loss to the Browns, ending Survivor season early for THE WINDOW’s entry in Circa Survivor 2026. Matt looks back at how data points are being “ruined” by quarterback injuries, as we try to sift through who is good and who is bad in the NFL — and everything in-between. Vikings-Bears was the best example of what we’re up against in trying to bet this league, with Panthers-Falcons not far behind. What are the Texans doing out there? The Eagles are a pain to evaluate. How did the Jets lose? How did the Saints win? Did the Steelers “infect” the Patriots? The Broncos outlast the Jaguars. Drew Lock or Sam Darnold — does it matter?  Maybe you missed it? The NFL Betting Market “Glimpse” after Week 1 Thursday Night Football: Lions-Bills NFL Week 2: Survivor contest outlook NFL Week 2 betting: “The Sunday Best” NFL Week 2 props: “The Player Prop Express” Monday Night Football: Giants-Rams College Football betting: The big games for Week 3 College Football betting: The “Saturday 7” for Week 3 Then Matt looks back at a big bounce-back Week 3 in College Football with a 5-2 “Saturday 7,” some satisfying wins in the biggest games, and why Temple’s choking away a 14-point lead in the final minutes didn’t end up hurting some bettors’ chances to win a RUMP.  Plus, there’s a “safe” bet, and a last call for one we’ve already made, in our weekly look at the Heisman Trophy Report. It’s time to head to THE WINDOW, let’s go!
DEFENSE IS OPTIONAL (9.15.26): The pervasive wrench that was thrown into handicapping the season’s first week, and a College Football reckoning
2026/09/15
In this week’s episode of THE WINDOW: Sports betting podcast, Matt Russell (@mrussauthentic) looks back at Week 1 in the NFL with “Right or Wrong,” looking at how the absence of any defense — especially from units that are supposed to be good enough to carry a team — changed the calculus of handicapping games.  The season opened with a pair of snoozers, and while we were “right” in taking the Patriots +3.5, the injury to Sam Darnold fundamentally changed HOW New England got the cover and the prop outlook shifted in kind.  “Australia” was an unforeseen circumstance which left the market guessing on how teams were supposed to attack their sleep schedule for a game — a fundamentally lame way to have to handicap a game.  The rest of the week was decided by what level of defense each team was interested in play, as busted coverages and broken tackles were pervasive.  Note to selves for Week 1 2027: Don’t assume ANYTHING from a good a defense last season, let alone teams with units that are hoped to be improved.  Luckily, the sheer number of touchdowns helped us cash some winners in those markets to ease the pain of a sub-.500 ATS Week 1. Maybe you missed it? NFL Opening night betting preview: Patriots-Seahawks Thursday Night Football: 49ers-Rams NFL Week 1: Survivor contest outlook NFL Week 1 betting: “The Sunday Best” NFL Week 1 props: “The Player Prop Express” Monday Night Football: Broncos-Chiefs College Football betting: The big games for Week 2 College Football betting: The “Saturday 7” Then Matt looks back at Week 2 in College Football with a mea culpa on the Oklahoma-Michigan game, but why The Panes also deserved better with Arizona State-Texas A&M, Arizona-BYU, and UCLA-San Diego State. Followed by a brief look at the Heisman Trophy market.  It’s time to head to THE WINDOW, let’s go!
WAIT JUST A SECOND (9.8.26): College Football’s Week 1 dramatics, and a last look at NFL Futures
2026/09/08
In this week’s episode of THE WINDOW: Sports betting podcast, Matt Russell (@mrussauthentic) looks back at the betting results for Week 1 of College Football, and the biggest storyline — Michigan beating Western Michigan thanks to a manufactured clock technicality.  Western Michigan got screwed by the Big Ten, but not only does it not matter, does it actually help the Mustangs? More importantly, there’s a long shot bet to be made because of it! Maybe you missed it? Week 1 “Saturday 7” Week 1 Big Games (free for Yahoo!) and weeknight primetime games CFB Preview podcast and links to season-long bets Then, Matt reflects on THE WINDOW’s NFL betting previews before the first games kick-off for the 2026 season on Wednesday night. Here’s the list of pieces, both free and paywall’d, that contain a total of 88 bets in the form of team futures, season-long player props, player stat-leader props, NFL Awards, and everything in between:  NFC TEAM BETTING PREVIEW AFC TEAM BETTING PREVIEW NFL AWARDS BETTING NFL RUSHING LEADERS NFL PASSING LEADERS NFL RECEIVING LEADERS Finally, here’s a reminder of the weekly betting content schedule during football season at THE WINDOW: Monday: Monday Night Football betting preview (Free for Yahoo!) 2026 COLLEGE FOOTBALL BETTING OVERVIEW (8.21.26): Looking back at THE WINDOW’s College Football betting preview series, and National Championship betting
2026/08/20
In this week’s episode of THE WINDOW: Sports betting podcast, Matt Russell (@mrussauthentic) reflects on THE WINDOW’s College Football betting previews with a week to go before the first games of the 2026 season.  Here’s the list of pieces, both free and paywall’d, that contain a total of 58 bets in the form of championship futures (Conference and College Football Playoff), regular-season win totals, “Game of the Year” bets, and the start of the Heisman Trophy portfolio: CFB BETTING MARKET PREVIEW SEC BETTING PREVIEW BIG TEN BETTING PREVIEW ACC BETTING PREVIEW BIG 12 BETTING PREVIEW GROUP OF SIX BETTING PREVIEW CFB GOTY BETTING COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF FUTURES HEISMAN TROPHY BETTING Matt goes down the list talking about his outlook on the Power-4 conferences, how the big change in the Group of Six effects the betting market, his own shot at guess the final College Football Playoff picture, and what the point is of betting “Game of the Year” point spreads.  Finally, in a podcast-only feature — the National Championship. Why Matt’s not crazy about betting on a champion in August, BUT… the THREE teams he thinks you can get value with come December.  It’s time to head to THE WINDOW, let’s go!

SPIRIT OF THE GAME (7.14.26): Season 4 of THE WINDOW begins with some summer-hot takes
2026/07/14
In this week’s episode of THE WINDOW: Sports betting podcast, Matt Russell (@mrussauthentic) checks in with a summer edition of the podcast, after consuming a month’s worth of World Cup soccer.  Even without being a big fan of the sport, there’s still been some notable takeaways that will help our betting in other sports. USA Soccer got overrated before their game with Belgium, as a controversial move didn’t work out.  How the Folarin Balogun situation related to college football’s biggest offseason story.  Do we need to fix soccer? Or is “soccer” screwing things up for themselves?  Matt explains why the “spirit of the game” means something different in soccer versus hockey or football.  Speaking of the NFL, we’ve got an updated look at estimated market power ratings for every team with the added data points of the point spread being offered for every game this season. Matt explains the difference between an action changing a team’s rating, and “action” changing it.  MAYBE YOU MISSED IT? NFL Betting: Schedule release and power ratings (Pt. 1) NFL Betting: Schedule release and power ratings (Pt. 2) NFL Betting: Free for Yahoo! — The five lookahead line bets to make now NFL Betting: NFL team estimated market power ratings ahead of training camps Then, Matt gives his take on another province — Alberta — coming to widespread sports betting legalization, and how to treat that.  Why the Brendan Sorsby situation should have fallen into the same category as Folarin Balogun’s red card. From now until July 31st, membership is available at $120 annually. THE DEEP END OF THE POOL (6.16.26): The Carolina Hurricanes cap an epic betting run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and U.S. Open targets
2026/06/16
In this week’s episode of THE WINDOW: Sports betting podcast, Matt Russell (@mrussauthentic) breaks down the Hurricanes’ Stanley Cup championship: What happened to separate Carolina from Vegas The Hurricanes’ “stories” Carolina as “inoffensive” champions A win for the metrics Then it’s a betting breakdown of our Stanley Cup Playoffs, including Nik Ehlers’ clutch empty-net goal. Series team betting: 11-3-1 (+11.08 units) Player prop series betting: 8-16 (+25 units) Then, Matt discusses the goals for THE WINDOW as a sports betting content provider, with an eye on providing insight into what “value” actually means, what goes into having an opinion on value (compared to how he’s just guessing when it comes to fun betting events like the World Cup), and why knowledge and understanding is the key to responsible betting.  Plus, Jordan Staal’s run to take the Conn Smythe Trophy as a mega-longshot late, in keeping with our theory as to why there was always a strong possibility for a weird winner coming from the Hurricanes.  📢 Considering joining THE WINDOW’s Panes for the ‘26 season? From now until July 31st, membership is available at $120 annually. Just over $5 (USD) per the 22 weeks of football season from Week 1 of college football until the Super Bowl (plus, you get season-long bets in August, March Madness, and the Stanley Cup Playoffs!). However, those paying monthly CAN switch over to the discounted annual rate to save over $10/month. HOW TO CHANGE FROM MONTHLY TO ANNUAL Finally, as part of the Season 3 finale of THE WINDOW, Matt goes back through the 2025-‘26 betting calendar — with sizeable profit in all four of our major sports: NFL, College Football, March Madness, and the Stanley Cup Playoffs — and Matt gives a reminder about how he bets major championship golf, with his six targets for the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, but why he won’t bet them to win… yet. It’s time to head to THE WINDOW, let’s go!
CONN ARTISTS (6.10.26): A thrilling Stanley Cup Final has created two very interesting cases for playoff MVP
2026/06/10
In this week’s episode of THE WINDOW: Sports betting podcast, Matt Russell (@mrussauthentic) looks back at games 3 and 4 of a Stanley Cup Final that continues to be as tightly played as possible.  Mitch Marner’s hat-trick and Shea Theodore’s bank shot gave Vegas the lead, but the Hurricanes tied the series back up on the strength of the continued production of an unlikely source, and (despite?) a change in goal.  Matt digs into the complexity around the Frederik Andersen situation, Carter Hart’s struggles through four games, and which team’s got a bigger issue in net going forward for a matchup that’s been almost equal at even-strength.  Maybe you missed it? Stanley Cup Final betting preview: Golden Knights-Hurricanes THE WINDOW’s “Glimpse” into the NHL betting market (6.9.26) NHL Betting: The 4% Club NHL Betting: The goaltenders that matter NHL Betting: Creating a rating for team’s skaters THE WINDOW’s NHL market tracker NFL Betting: Schedule release and power ratings (Pt. 1) NFL Betting: Schedule release and power ratings (Pt. 2) NFL Betting: Free for Yahoo! — The five lookahead line bets to make now Then, Matt looks at history when digging into the two big stories in the Conn Smythe betting market: Mitch Marner has shorter odds to win the playoff MVP than his team has to win the Stanley Cup, but can he win it in a losing cause? Is there a similar example where a player has been snubbed with the same comparative resume?  Jordan Staal has FIVE goals in the Stanley Cup Final, but just two in the rest of the playoffs. Can a non-team-leader with so few points win the Conn Smythe?  It’s time to head to THE WINDOW, let’s go!
FORGING & SURGING (6.5.26): Breaking down an electric start to the Stanley Cup Final between the Golden Knights and Hurricanes
2026/06/05
In this week’s episode of THE WINDOW: Sports betting podcast, Matt Russell (@mrussauthentic) looks back at the thrilling first two games of the Stanley Cup Final, as Vegas and Carolina split two games that couldn’t have been closer from both an advanced metrics perspective, and on the scoreboard.  Is now the time to add one more unit on the Hurricanes for the series? Especially considering any pre-series positions on Golden Knights’ futures and our Conn Smythe portfolio? Maybe you missed it? Stanley Cup Final betting preview: Golden Knights-Hurricanes Western Conference Final Preview: Golden Knights-Avalanche Eastern Conference Final Preview: Canadiens-Hurricanes THE WINDOW’s “Glimpse” into the NHL betting market NHL Betting: The 4% Club NHL Betting: The goaltenders that matter NHL Betting: Creating a rating for team’s skaters THE WINDOW’s NHL market tracker NFL Betting: Schedule release and power ratings (Pt. 1) NFL Betting: Schedule release and power ratings (Pt. 2) NFL Betting: Free for Yahoo! — The five lookahead line bets to make now Then, Matt looks at how things have changed in the Conn Smythe betting market through two games, through the lens of the “win probability pie,” which looks at how likely each contender is to win the award based on the best odds available, and on the assumption that his team wins the Stanley Cup. Plus, can something Elliotte Friedman says trigger a bet on a mega-long shot? It can, if he’s a voter. It’s time to head to THE WINDOW, let’s go!
STANLEY’S CHOICE (6.2.26): Trying to choose between the Golden Knights and Hurricanes
2026/06/02
In this week’s episode of THE WINDOW: Sports betting podcast, Matt Russell (@mrussauthentic) looks back at the Golden Knights’ and Hurricanes’ road to the Stanley Cup Final. Two teams that we’ve been riding to a 6-0 series record as part of THE WINDOW’s best Stanley Cup Playoff run ever. Series bets: 10-3-1 (+10.1 units) Props: 7-15 (+16 units) What the betting market has done to the Golden Knights, after their upset of the Avalanche in the Western Conference Final, and why the Hurricanes’ 12-1 run has out-performed even the already-high expectations of oddsmakers.  Then Matt talks about what approach he’s taking with Vegas Stanley Cup futures, and the Conn Smythe portfolio built on long-shot odds from early on.  Plus, the voters might be inclined to steer away from Carter Hart and towards Mitch Marner and Jack Eichel, if the debate is anywhere near close, and why the Canes’ best candidate might be more of a “default” pick, given what the scoring dispersion looks like on Carolina’s roster.  Maybe you missed it? Stanley Cup Final betting preview: Golden Knights-Hurricanes Western Conference Final Preview: Golden Knights-Avalanche Eastern Conference Final Preview: Canadiens-Hurricanes THE WINDOW’s “Glimpse” into the NHL betting market NHL Betting: The 4% Club NHL Betting: The goaltenders that matter NHL Betting: Creating a rating for team’s skaters THE WINDOW’s NHL market tracker NFL Betting: Schedule release and power ratings (Pt. 1) NFL Betting: Schedule release and power ratings (Pt. 2) NFL Betting: Free for Yahoo! — The five lookahead line bets to make now Then, Myles Garrett gets traded to the Rams — a bit of June 1st news far more surprising than A.J. Brown’s deal to the Patriots. Matt talks about that big move as the jumping off point for another look at the NFL market ratings to come in the next week or two, and why there’s no reason to make a panic bet right now.  It’s time to head to THE WINDOW, let’s go!
GOLDEN OPPORTUNITIES (5.25.26): Vegas keeps paying out, and Carolina’s Hurri-CONN-undrum
2026/05/25
In this week’s episode of THE WINDOW: Sports betting podcast, Matt Russell (@mrussauthentic) looks back at the last week of play in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, as he puts a bow on the Sabres Game 7 loss to the Canadiens, Montreal jumping on a rusty Hurricanes team in the Eastern Conference Final, and the Golden Knights taking not one, two, but three games from Colorado to cash bets on the series-games spread before Game 4 even happens.  Matt discusses Friday’s special, Substack-only, video podcast breaking down THE WINDOW’s NHL market tracker — how the market undersold the absence of Cale Makar to Colorado’s chances of winning, and then wildly overreacted to his return, setting up winning money line bets when compared to our money line targets, found in the Vegas-Colorado series preview. Maybe you missed it? Western Conference Final Preview: Golden Knights-Avalanche Eastern Conference Final Preview: Canadiens-Hurricanes NHL Betting: The 4% Club NHL Betting: The goaltenders that matter NHL Betting: Creating a rating for team’s skaters THE WINDOW’s NHL market tracker NFL Betting: Schedule release and power ratings (Pt. 1) NFL Betting: Schedule release and power ratings (Pt. 2) NFL Betting: Free for Yahoo! — The five lookahead line bets to make now Plus, with a pair of surprising starts to the conference finals, it’s time to survey the landscape again for the Conn Smythe award, as there’s been a seismic shift on the oddsboard. In what’s been a confusing potential Conn Smythe matrix for the Hurricanes, could their second-highest paid player end up being worth every penny? At 80-1, it’s worth a shot. It’s time to head to THE WINDOW, let’s go!
