BroadwayCon 2020: The Ensemblist #259 - My Show Closed (feat. Tracee Beazer, Afra Hines, Kelvin Moon Loh, Barrett Martin, Bret Shuford)
2020/04/01
Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to bring together five of the most experienced and storied ensemble actors working on Broadway today before a live audience at BroadwayCon. We talked about the shows they originated and the characters they’ve created, but also the disappointments they’ve felt when a show closed. While actors Tracee Beazer, Afra Hines, Kelvin Moon Loh, Barrett Martin and Bret Shuford have each influenced the legacy of musical theatre, they’ve also been a part of shows that just didn’t gain traction with Broadway audiences. I figured with their experience, they must have some perspective about how to handle the disappointment of being in a Broadway flop. Here’s our conversation…
BroadwayCon 2020: Page to Stage 23 - Eliza Ohman, Performer/Choreographer
2020/03/30
Thank you for listening to this episode. We hope you enjoy it! A note about this week's episode: This is a recorded conversation from Broadway Podcast Network HQ at BroadwayCon 2020. Stay tuned for Part 2 of this conversation where we'll talk about her role as Associate Choreographer for the Broadway production of SIX. Eliza Ohman is a New York City based performer and the US Associate Choreographer for SIX: The Musical. Most recently seen in the Chita Rivera Award winning Original Broadway Company of King Kong and previously Dance Captain and Universal Swing in Hamilton: An American Musical on Broadway, she had the great privilege of working closely with the original creative team and assisted in setting Hamilton’s 2nd National Tour. As Dance Captain she taught new company members the show, ran rehearsals for the offstage company, and assisted in the auditions for all four North American productions. Eliza began dancing at the age of 3 in her home state of Colorado. She trained at a local studio and toured nationally with Prof. Robert L. Reed’s tap company the St. Louis Hoofers Club. After high school she moved to New York City where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Media, Culture, and the Arts from The King’s College and received further training from the Professional Semester Program at Broadway Dance Center. Through BDC’s program she gained representation from Clear Talent Group and booked her first NYC job in the Ensemble of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular.  In addition to theatre, Eliza also works commercially. Some career favorites include the Emmy award winning Fosse/Verdon (FX), The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon), Saturday Night Live (NBC), Dispatches from Elsewhere (AMC), America’s Got Talent (NBC), Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO), and more! She’s danced in a number of music videos, one of her favorites being Carly Rae Jepsen’s “I Really Like You”—a day where she spent the morning teaching Carly Rae, Tom Hanks, and Justin Bieber the choreography, and the afternoon filming outside in New York City on the coldest recorded day of 2016. Through all these experiences, Eliza has developed close relationships with award winning director/choreographers such as Andy Blankenbuehler, Thomas Kail, Marguerite Derricks, Kat Burns, Linda Haberman, Denis Jones, Noemie Lafrance, Susan Misner, and Drew McOnie. These experiences encourage Eliza to remain as diverse as possible in both her training and teaching. She’s an enthusiastic teacher who focuses on the importance of storytelling through dance. She’s taught at studios/programs around the country, but most recently at Broadway Dance Center, Marymount Manhattan College, and is a guest faculty member for Intrigue Dance Intensive.  Always looking to grow as an artist, Eliza continues to train, teach, and perform in New York. Cady Huffman Interview
2020/02/25
LIVE from BroadwayCon 2020, I am recording a very special episode of Baring It All with Call Me Adam, on the Broadway Podcast Network, with Tony Award Winner and Emmy Nominee Cady Huffman. We discuss her award winning turn in Mel Brooks' The Producers as well as play a game entitled "Cady Did," inspired by her new digital TV series of the same name. Cady is best known for winning the 2001 Tony Award for Best Performance by a "Featured Actress in a Musical" for playing Ulla in Mel Brooks' The Producers, which starred Matthew Broderick & Nathan Lane. Cady also received a 2019 Emmy Nomination for "Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Daytime Digital Drama Series" for her portrayal of Lisa in Amazon Prime's After Forever. She just launched her own digital TV series call "Cady Did," which is available on YouTube. More on Cady: Cady has been seen on Hulu’s Difficult People, Netflix’s Master of None and on the web series After Forever (for which she received a 2019 Emmy Nomination) and He's With Me, for which she won the 2016 Indie Series Award for Best Guest Appearance in a Comedy. Cady recently returned to the Broadway stage in a limited engagement as “Mama Morton” in the Broadway production of Chicago. Previous Broadway credits include the Tony Award winning play The Nance opposite Nathan Lane, for which she received an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination, but she is best known for her Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award winning performance as "Ulla" in The Producers on Broadway opposite Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. This led to her unforgettable recurring role on HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm where she almost became Larry David's 10th anniversary present. This success also brought her to the Food Network's kitchen stadium where she judged for 10 consecutive seasons on Iron Chef America. Cady's other Broadway credits are her Tony-nominated performance as Ziegfeld’s Favorite in The Will Rogers Follies, the original production of La Cage Aux Folles, Steel Pier, Dame Edna: The Royal Tour, and Bob Fosse’s last original musical Big Deal. She has had several guest starring appearances on television, including recurring roles on The Good Wife and Blue Bloods, Madam Secretary, Law & Order: SVU, Law & Order: CI, Law & Order: Trial By Jury, Frasier and Mad About You. She even showed up on Daytime's One Life To Live as the 2nd Dr. Paige Miller. Cady’s big screen appearances include The Company Men opposite Ben Affleck and Chris Cooper, John Turturro’s star studded musical film Romance & Cigarettes, Hero (with Dustin Hoffman, Geena Davis and Andy Garcia), The Nanny Diaries opposite Scarlett Johansson and the wonderful Christmas movie Love The Coopers. She also has starring roles in the indy films Dare, $20 Drinks, Billy's Dad Is A F*********r, Space Marines and Throw the Hoolihan. She also produced and stars in film festival favorite Sunday on the Rocks, which won 2nd Place Feature at the New Haven Film Festival.
