Echoes from Gaza- Writing Home
2025/12/15
Echoes from Gaza, 15th December Monday 11PM(WhatsApp message from Gaza)Fadi writes: I write this message as the rain beats against my tent, and due to its intensity, I can barely hear my mother’s voice. The thunder strikes us from above like a nuclear bomb, accompanied by the sound of heavy gunfire from Israeli tanks to the east and the terrifying sounds of warships prowling in the sea to the west. I write this while shivering from the cold, barely able to hold my phone.Fadi Basem is a teacher, a writer, a lover of nature, of making things grow, and of books and language. His photographs highlight the small and beautifuldetails of the life around him. Similarly, his stories and vignettes are vibrant, compelling, evocative, and poignant.Monday the 15th December, we at Writing Home share Fadi’s words in his own voice.“My name is Fadi, and I am from Gaza. I am a teacher who possesses a powerful weapon to defend my people and our freedom. My weapon does not kill or injure; it does not leave behind orphans. My gun is my pen. As a writer, I strive to convey the real suffering that we, the people of Gaza, have endured. I hope you visit my website to learn more about me and the stories I have written.”Details to support him are here https://chuffed.org/project/123515-help-fadi-support-his-family-rebuild-their-lives-in-gazaplease give generously. We will see you 11PM, 15th December, Monday night.
Writing Home- In the spirit of the guest, the neighbour and the friend.
2025/09/22
The Sanskrit phrase “Atithi Devo Bhava,” meaning “The guest is like God,” reflects the value of showing the same respect and reverence to guests as one would to a deity. It embodies a deep cultural principle guiding the host-guest relationship, highlighting the importance of generosity, care, and hospitality. This concept originates from the Taittiriya Upanishad, Shikshavalli I.11.2, which instructs individuals to regard their mother, father, teacher, and guest as divine: “matrudevo bhava, pitrudevo bhava, acharyadevo bhava, atithidevo bhava.”In essence, guests are to be treated with the respect and honor due to God. The Sanskrit term “Atithi” refers to someone who comes without prior notice, underscoring the spontaneous nature of visitors and the duty to welcome them at any time. Neighbours become guests and guests become friend. We invite you to be our guest and join us for a night of poems, music and stories celebrating friendship, hospitality and community. We’ll be reading Unending Love by Rabindranath Tagore, Be nobody’s darling by Alice Walker, Filter by Suma Subramaniam and a Letter from Gaza by Ghassan Kanafani.

Writing Home-Storytellers Cannot Exist In An Apolitical Environment
2025/05/26
In this episode of Writing Home, Madhvi interviews Sparsh the maker of Birdsong, painting an intimate portrait of the dying whistled language of the Hmong people in northern Laos, and Lost Migration a three part series on the untold stories of 1947 from other regions and communities in South Asia. Their conversation revolves around making films about lives of people, extractive culture, creative tension and artistic responsibility in a political world. They also touch on what it means to belong and identify or be identified in an individualistic world or what it means to be in a commune with a shared identity where one belongs to their culture and community. This episode also is a tribute to a friend’s school in Darbangha Bihar that solely runs on mutual aid. This month, let’s give our brains a break and do what ravers do best: have a dance. I hope for you a small glimpse of rave magic – a leftfield thought brought on by strange vibrations, or a surprising way your body responds to a certain sound. Listen closely and you may also hear hints of my journey as I made this mix: the first 40 minutes I was sat by a phone call on speaker to the Centrelink help line because my payment didn’t come through. A poignant relic of the life of a raver: tuning out the garish sounds of the State to make art for your friends. This is stolen land; sovereignty has never een ceded. I pay my respects to Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung elders past and present. Dancing, music, rhythm and resistance are far from new to this place. Thousands of generations of feet have kicked up dust here and screamed joy at the face of the oppressor.

Matriarchy-The Ultimate Solution-Writing Home
2025/01/17
In matriarchal societies “nurturing behaviour” is the order of the day. This is why the foundation of the clan is based on mothers.“Everyone has received some care as a child, therefore it is a principle of balance that all people, in turn, should also care for children”“Matriarchies, throughout history as well as in those that still exist today, are not societies where women rule - which is the common, misguided view; rather, matriarchies have managed to stay in existence over millennia, without hierarchies and without domination. They have maintained themselves without using war games; that is, without establishing armies for organized killing. Violence against women and children is virtually unknown to them, whereas patriarchal societies worldwide are overwhelmed with it.”Tune in this Saturday 9AM on Writing Home @3crmelbourne or listen later through Spotify (link in bio)Readings-Dr. Heide Goettner-AbendrothPatriarchy: The Ultimate Conspiracy; Matriarchy:The Ultimate Solution History - or 'His-story' by Russell MeansJune Jordan’s poem “Poem About My Rights”You can find the readings in the link in our bio. Feminist Readings-Savitri Bai Phule-Writing Home
2025/01/10
Remembering Savitri Bai Phule on her Jayanti (birthday) Feminism, for Savitri Bai Phule, was not just about advocating for women’s rights in isolation; it was intrinsically linked with the struggles of the oppressed. She believed that women’s liberation could only be achieved when the shackles of caste, class, and tradition were broken. Through her education and activism, Savitri Bai Phule illuminated the path toward a society where equality was not a distant dream but a tangible reality. Her work resonated far beyond her lifetime, inspiring countless others to challenge entrenched systems of oppression. “The pen is mightier than the sword. Education is the greatest weapon to eradicate social evils.” “Awaken, arise, and educate. Smash traditions, liberate minds, and transform society.” We will also be reading you some Telugu Dalit Short Stories from @pantherspawpublication Tune in Saturday 11th 9AM at 3CR 855AM or listen later via link in bio Music played- Enjoy Enjami- Aviru I wish I knew how it would feel-Nina Simone Jago-Amira Gill Butterfly-Akshara Messy-Lola Young
