The Student’s Guide to Financial Freedom – Helping Young People Build Wealth, Avoid Debt, and Create a Meaningful Life - Dr. Paris Woods
2026/06/19
In this episode of Women in Investing, host Athena Paquette welcomes back author, educator, and financial literacy advocate Dr. Paris Woods to discuss her newest book, The Student’s Guide to Financial Freedom: A Real-World Money Guide to Help Young People Build Wealth, Avoid Traps, and Plan for Freedom. About Dr. Paris Woods Dr. Woods shares her inspiring journey from growing up in poverty in St. Louis, Missouri, to becoming a first-generation college graduate. Through academic excellence, determination, and a powerful vision for her future, she earned admission to both Harvard and Yale and ultimately graduated from Harvard without student loan debt. She later earned advanced degrees and dedicated her career to helping others achieve educational and financial success. Key Themes Discussed 1. The Power of Dreaming and Vision Dr. Woods emphasizes that financial success begins with having a vision for your life. As a young person growing up with limited resources, she surrounded herself with positive influences, inspirational books, and goals that seemed impossible at the time. She believes that young people must first imagine the life they want before they can create a financial plan to achieve it. Key takeaway: Money should support your dreams—not become the dream itself. 2. Education as a Pathway to Opportunity Raised by a mother who stressed the importance of education despite financial hardships, Dr. Woods viewed school as her pathway out of poverty. She discusses how curiosity, persistence, and a willingness to pursue opportunities helped her navigate a challenging educational journey. She encourages students and parents not to self-eliminate from opportunities based on assumptions about cost, background, or competitiveness. Key takeaway: Apply for opportunities even when they seem out of reach. You never know what doors may open. 3. The Three Biggest Financial Mistakes Young People Make Mistake #1: Taking on Too Much Debt Dr. Woods explains that many young adults accumulate significant debt shortly after turning 18 because borrowing money has become normalized. Student loans, credit cards, and car loans often feel like the default option. Her advice: Pause before signing financial agreements.Explore alternatives.Research scholarships, grants, work-study programs, and other funding sources.Consider whether debt is truly necessary.Key takeaway: Just because debt is common doesn't mean it's the best choice. Mistake #2: Making Money the Goal Instead of Life Satisfaction Many young people choose careers solely based on income potential. Dr. Woods warns that tying self-worth to income can create a never-ending pursuit where success never feels sufficient. Instead, she encourages people to focus on: Personal fulfillmentPurposeStrengths and interestsQuality of lifeKey takeaway: A meaningful life should drive financial decisions—not the other way around. Mistake #3: Failing to Create a Financial Plan Early Although not discussed as a formal third point in the early portion of the interview, both Athena and Dr. Woods stress the importance of planning ahead, saving intentionally, and understanding how today's financial decisions affect future freedom. Key takeaway: Financial freedom comes from thoughtful planning, not impulsive spending. Discussion on Social Mobility and Opportunity Dr. Woods reflects on how luck, hard work, supportive mentors, and educational opportunities all contributed to her success. She acknowledges that many talented students never receive the same opportunities and believes society should do more to simplify pathways to success for future generations. Lessons for Parents and Young Adults The conversation repeatedly returns to one central idea: Young people need financial education before they begin making major money decisions.Dr. Woods wrote The Student’s Guide to Financial Freedom to provide practical guidance that many students never receive in school, including: Avoiding financial trapsUnderstanding debtBuilding wealth earlyMaking intentional career decisionsCreating a vision for the futureMajor Takeaways Financial freedom starts with a clear vision for your life.Education remains one of the most powerful tools for upward mobility.Debt should be approached carefully and strategically.Don't let money become the sole measure of success.Curiosity and persistence often open unexpected opportunities.Young adults benefit tremendously from financial education before entering adulthood.Building wealth is about creating options and freedom—not simply accumulating money.Overall Message Dr. Paris Woods delivers a powerful message of hope, intentionality, and empowerment. Her story demonstrates that background does not determine destiny, and that with education, planning, and the right mindset, young people can build lives of both financial stability and personal fulfillment. This interview serves as both an inspirational success story and a practical roadmap for students, parents, and anyone seeking long-term financial freedom.

2026/06/13
Podcast Summary:  In this insightful conversation, host Athena Paquette sits down with renowned hypnotherapist, author, and educator Dr. Shelly Stockwell-Nicholas to explore the mental and emotional barriers that prevent people from creating the wealth, abundance, and life they truly desire. Drawing on decades of experience in hypnosis, psychology, and personal development, Dr. Stockwell-Nicholas explains how many people unknowingly operate from limiting stories rooted in past experiences. These outdated beliefs often become invisible obstacles that affect financial success, relationships, confidence, and personal fulfillment. Key topics discussed include: How subconscious beliefs shape financial outcomesThe connection between personal identity and abundanceWhy focusing on what you want is more powerful than focusing on what you don't wantThe role of imagination, intention, and sensory perception in creating resultsHow to release old narratives that no longer serve your futureThe importance of developing a compelling vision for your lifeDr. Stockwell-Nicholas also shares her remarkable personal journey—from working as a flight attendant to becoming a nationally recognized author, television personality, educator, and leader in the field of hypnosis. Her story serves as a powerful example of how clarity of purpose and belief can transform a dream into reality. Athena contributes her own experiences with visualization and manifestation, illustrating how intentional focus helped her achieve important goals in her life. Together, they emphasize that abundance is not merely about money—it is about aligning your thoughts, beliefs, and actions with the future you want to create. This episode offers practical wisdom and inspiration for anyone seeking greater prosperity, personal growth, and a deeper understanding of the mind's role in shaping success. Guest: Dr. Shelly Stockwell-Nicholas Host: Athena Paquette Main Takeaway: The stories you tell yourself become the reality you experience. How to Become RentAble to 4.5 Million Untapped STR Guests
2023/08/08
How to Become RentAble to 4.5 Million Untapped STR Guests Join me as I chat with the founder of becomingrentable.com, Lorraine Woodward, who will share how her company is turning the short-term rental market on its head. Lorraine left a successful long-term career in the corporate and nonprofit world to create the solution she and families like hers needed. You see Lorraine is living with MS and has 2 children with muscular dystrophy, MD. So it was a challenge, and let's be honest, a stress on her husband, for them to find the right place to stay when traveling. She bought a second home and made it wheelchair friendly. Then when they weren't using it they put it out as a short-term rental. She had people drive from Texas to NC because there is such a need. That was the spark. She is going to be the Expedia Group/VRBO for special needs accommodation. And she is growing like gang busters. The growth of Becoming rentABLE in just 2 years has been staggering, during this time Lorraine’s teams' accomplishments include:     Having over 1200 accessible short-term, rental properties on their listing map, which makes them have more accessible short-term, rental listings than Air BnB and VRBO combined. Listings in all 50 states in over 685 cities across the United States. In August, International Hospitality Media Limited out of the UK listed Lorraine Woodward and Becoming rentABLE in the top 20 influencers across travel, hospitality, and real estate. The team has built the first and only fully accessible short-term rental property for individuals with mobility, vision, hearing, and/or Autism/IDD in the United States. Becoming rentABLE is 1 of 12 startups selected for Expedia Group's new Open World Accelerator program. Each startup has created technology to improve accessibility for underserved travelers.  Come hear her story AND how you can stand out as a vacation home provider for those who have been ignored until Lorraine came along that is.  What do you need to stand out and how can her company help you serve this part of the vacationing public profitably? https://www.becomingrentable.com https://www.becomingrentable.com/the-little-yellow-house #investmentproperty #handicapstr #lorrainewoodward #athenapaquette
How to Get 3X ROI with Apartment ADU's
2023/06/19
Multifamily ADUs top floor, bottom floor and garage ADUs Join us as we chat with Cameron Crockett of UltraUnit a company that specializes in creating ADUs in multifamily dwellings, specifically in Long Beach CA. He will take us through the process from visioning the ADU space layout and feel, to minimizing cost and disturbance to the existing structure and tenants and maximizing property value, to getting permits to completion. He will share how he also minimizes the time for permitting. He has created ADUs on top floors of buildings, in parking lots, on the side of existing buildings, and his favorite: converting garages into living spaces. He will give us guidance on what makes an ADU expensive and how to circumvent the top 5 killer mistakes investors make when creating an ADU. Why did I choose him as a guest? Because he is helping us with our ADU after false starts with another architect who it turns out was not familiar enough with the process or the city. Even if you are in a different city, his approach and dos and don'ts are universal, and worth the investment of time to learn. www.ultra-unit.com   Cameron Crockett (562) 997-0971 #cameroncrockett   #ultra-unit.com  #athenapaquette

Learn about Symbihom & Garage ADU kit with Rebecca Moller
2023/03/15
Meet Rebecca Moller, founder and creator of SYmbiHom, the garage ADU kit! Cities need to meet RHNA mandates. Institutions and corporations need to ensure that workforce housing is available to attract and retain young talent and to grow. Homeownership is unaffordable for the average earner. An aging population needs to age in place with income to assist them. In California, one in three homeowners and renters are cost-burdened, spending > 50% of their income on housing. 3.5 million market rate and affordable housing units are needed in California alone. New multi-family construction cannot meet demand. Workers cannot afford to live near work and half of our aging population needs an income subsidy.  Increased land cost, land use laws, permitting, development processes, and rising construction costs have slowed the rate at which traditional new residential density can be built. In short, demand outweighs supply—most notably in metro areas where a lack of affordable housing has forced workers far away from their employers.  The Solution: convert existing garages into living spaces. and have an easy-to-implement kit to do it. That's SYmbiHom! An efficient, green housing solution and fast track to creating workforce housing in the neighborhoods they serve.   Rebecca is passionate about creating housing and in scaling this solution from the 80 kits that have been sold in 2022 to 4,000 kits in 2026. https://www.symbihom.com/ Phone: (510) 930-8900 Email: [email protected] #affordablehousing #investmentproperty #Rebecca Moller #athenapaquette
