Description

Vanessa Bennett and Dené Logan are two soul sisters and therapists who connected over their shared love of depth psychology—known as the psychology of the soul. It is a template for diving beneath the surface to examine the complex natures of being human while on the quest for wholeness, including the relationship to spirit. Through their training and lived experiences with depth, yogic psychology, and mindfulness, they developed a passion for supporting others in living their most authentic lives while cultivating a fulfilling and rich relationship with the Self, capital “S.” Every Wednesday, Vanessa and Dené look to demystify, de-stigmatize, and desensitize what goes on both inside the therapy room and in daily life, through soul-provoking conversations with fellow seekers, thought leaders, changemakers, and real people during live coaching sessions as they navigate the hard work it takes to be a human. Why I Love Resentment: Silent Agreements, Fear, and Doing Your Own Work
2026/10/12
Can you actually do your own work while you're still living inside an imperfect relationship — dishes undone, feelings unresolved, your partner moving at a different pace? In this solo episode, Vanessa unpacks the silent agreements that quietly run every relationship, the fear hiding underneath over- and under-functioning, and why change that only shows up during a crisis rarely lasts. She reframes resentment as one of the most reliable guides to self-betrayal, not a flaw to fix, and lays out what doing your own work actually looks like in real time, with real stakes — including for the helpers and caregivers whose jobs run on their inability to say no. This is depth work on the difference between change that happens to you and change that belongs to you. For educational purposes only. This isn’t therapy. Why You Sabotage the Closeness You Want Most: Attachment, Intimacy, and the Fear of Being Known
2026/10/05
Why does the thing we long for most (real closeness, being truly seen) so often make us want to run? In this solo episode, Vanessa unpacks what happens in the nervous system when connection starts to feel unsafe, drawing on attachment theory, polyvagal theory, and depth psychology to explain the shutdown, the merge, and everything in between. She traces how early relational wounds get encoded in the body long before they show up as adult patterns, and offers a simple, uncomfortable practice for rewriting them: saying the true thing, especially when it's the hardest thing to say. This is depth work on what it actually takes to stay present in your own skin while someone else gets close. For educational purposes only. This isn’t therapy. Your Gut Mirrors the Soil: Kelsey Crane on Fertility, Permaculture, and Climate Grief
2026/09/28
Kelsey Crane found her way from unexplained infertility to the healing intimacy of soil — and from there, to writing climate fiction that refuses to look away from collapse or give up on hope. In this conversation, Vanessa and Kelsey trace the thread between fertility and land, motherhood and creative risk, and what it actually means to become an apprentice of regenerative living. They talk about self-publishing a debut novel in the stolen pockets of a busy life, the difference between despair and grief, and why permaculture's first rule — observe before you act — might be the most important thing any of us can learn about healing the earth and ourselves. This is depth work: about soil, story, and the courage to plant something you may never see fully grown. For educational purposes only. This isn’t therapy. The Ego Is Not the Enemy: Laura Day on Intuition, Healing, and The Prism
2026/09/21
In this episode, Vanessa sits down with New York Times bestselling author and intuitive Laura Day to talk about The Prism, intuition, ego, and what it actually takes to create a different life. Together they explore why transcendence can become a spiritual cop-out, why a strong “I” is necessary for relationship and impact, and how old childhood contracts can keep us recreating familiar patterns even when we think we are choosing something new. Laura brings her signature grounded approach to intuition, showing how practical change often comes through small, safe, repeated actions rather than dramatic reinvention. This is a conversation about ego, alchemy, responsibility, and learning how to recognize the life you say you want when it finally arrives. Dr. Shefali on Conscious Parenting, Cycle Breaking, and Raising Sons and Daughters
2026/09/14
In this episode, Vanessa sits down with Dr. Shefali, clinical psychologist, New York Times bestselling author, and pioneer of the conscious parenting movement, for a conversation about parenting as one of the most direct encounters with the parent’s unconscious. Together they explore projection, control, codependency, rupture, repair, and the painful ways parents can use children to soothe their own anxiety or fulfill an unlived life. Dr. Shefali also shares the heart behind her two new books, Raising Conscious Daughters and Raising Conscious Sons, including how screens, algorithms, gender conditioning, and unconscious shame are shaping children today. This is a conversation about raising children by becoming more conscious ourselves—not more perfect, but more honest, attuned, and willing to repair. Early applications for the next cohort of Inner Compass Academy are now open to the waitlist only. If you’ve been feeling called toward deeper work with depth psychology, shadow, somatics, the unconscious, relational patterns, and learning how to hold space with more consciousness and integrity, this is the first window to apply. The Three C’s: Codependency and the End of the Fantasy of Control
2026/09/07
If you grew up learning that the safest thing you could do was manage the emotional environment, this episode is for you. Vanessa explores the Three C’s from codependency and Al-Anon recovery spaces: I didn’t cause it, I can’t control it, and I can’t cure it. Through family systems, Bowen’s differentiation of self, Jungian ego inflation and individuation, detaching with love, and the grief underneath control, this episode looks at why overfunctioning, rescuing, fixing, and emotional caretaking often feel like love while secretly functioning as anxiety management. The invitation is not to stop caring, but to stop confusing love with responsibility for someone else’s healing. Applications are now open to the public for Cohort 4 of Inner Compass Academy. ICA is Vanessa’s 10-week depth psychology training for therapists, coaches, space holders, creatives, seekers, and anyone who wants to go beyond surface-level self-help and learn how to work more deeply with shadow, the unconscious, embodiment, relational patterns, dreams, archetypes, and the symbolic life. This is not a program promising quick formulas or coaching scripts. It is a certificate training rooted in depth, Jungian theory, relationship, liberation psychology, and the kind of inner work that changes how we hold ourselves and others. Taking the Unseen Seriously: Lizzie Tilia on Intuition, Soul, and Earth Practice
2026/08/31
In this episode, Vanessa sits down with Lizzie Tilia, spiritual guide, psychic, teacher, and founder of Earth Mystery School, for a conversation about intuition, earth-based practice, soul work, and what it means to take the unseen seriously without losing your ground. Together they explore Lizzie’s path from OCD, Catholic conditioning, and fear of the spirit world into psychic development, containment, and a more loving relationship with the unseen. They also talk about Jung’s collective unconscious, pan-cultural wisdom, spiritual performance, ego versus soul versus spirit work, and why some people need stronger ego structure before entering deeper soul or spiritual spaces. This is a conversation about intuition as a skill, discernment as devotion, and learning to become a good spiritual friend to yourself before trying to guide anyone else. Embodiment Isn’t a Performance: Ailey Jolie on the Body, Pleasure, and Healing
2026/08/24
In this episode, Vanessa sits down with Ailey Jolie, Chartered Psychologist, somatic psychologist, certified sex therapist, and creator of INBODY, for a conversation about what embodiment actually means beyond the performance of being calm, sensual, regulated, or healed. Together they explore why disembodiment and dissociation can be intelligent survival strategies, how food and sexuality both ask us to reconnect with hunger, desire, permission, disgust, control, pleasure, and shame, and why the body cannot be separated from the larger cultural systems that taught us to leave it. This conversation moves through eating disorder recovery, sexual trauma, chronic illness, pleasure, sensuality, intergenerational stories, and the body as a doorway into the unconscious. The invitation is not to force yourself back into the body, but to bring mind and body back into relationship with more consciousness, safety, and truth. When Suffering Becomes Identity: The Martyr, Meaning-Making, and Codependency
2026/08/17
If you’ve ever wondered whether suffering can be meaningful without becoming your whole identity, this episode is for you. Vanessa explores the difference between suffering that humbles, transforms, and moves us toward greater honesty, and suffering that becomes a role, a claim, a performance, or a way to stay morally protected. Through depth psychology, meaning-making research, Viktor Frankl, Jung, terror management theory, Freud’s mourning and melancholia, secondary gain, pathological altruism, and the martyr archetype, we look at why pain can become so hard to release when it has given us significance, belonging, or leverage. The question is not whether your suffering is real; the question is what it is doing. Applications are now open to the public for Cohort 4 of Inner Compass Academy. ICA is Vanessa’s 10-week depth psychology training for therapists, coaches, space holders, creatives, seekers, and anyone called toward deeper work with shadow, the unconscious, embodiment, dreams, archetypes, relational patterns, and the symbolic life. Narcissism Is Not Always Loud: The Fragile Self Behind the Mirror
2026/08/03
Narcissism is usually imagined as arrogance, dominance, and the loudest person in the room, but it is not always that obvious. In this episode, Vanessa explores narcissism as a problem of selfhood: what happens when a person does not have a stable enough inner sense of Self to stay emotionally coherent without constant reflection from the outside. Through Kohut, Kernberg, the myth of Narcissus, vulnerable and grandiose narcissism, the false self, parental overvaluation, and the difference between traits and Narcissistic Personality Disorder, we look at why these dynamics can feel so confusing inside real relationships. The question is not only whether someone can be charming, wounded, or empathic when things are easy, but whether they can stay curious about your reality when it no longer mirrors back the version of themselves they need to see. For educational purposes only. This isn’t therapy. God Is Change: Trust, Impermanence, and Learning to Stay Present
2026/07/27
What if trusting life doesn’t mean trusting that everything will become stable, coherent, or reassuring? In this episode, Vanessa explores change as both a spiritual and psychological problem: why we confuse trust with continuity, why change can feel like abandonment, and what it means to stay in relationship with reality as it keeps moving. Through Octavia Butler’s “God is Change,” Heraclitus, Buddhist impermanence, process theology, attachment theory, meaning-making research, and Jungian transformation, we look at the grief and freedom of releasing the fantasy that life’s job is to preserve the forms we love. Trust is not certainty that everything will work out; it is the willingness to remain present with what is real as it changes form. For educational purposes only. This isn’t therapy. Fear Belongs: Why Healing Isn’t Becoming Fearless
2026/07/20
If you have ever felt fear in your body and then immediately made that fear mean something bad about you, this episode is for you. Vanessa explores fear not as something to conquer, transcend, or shame, but as something ancient, intelligent, protective, and deeply human. Through polyvagal theory, Buddhist psychology, the teaching of the first and second arrow, RAIN practice, and self-compassion, we look at what changes when we stop treating fear like the enemy. Healing is not becoming fearless; it is becoming less afraid of fear itself, so you can stay with yourself when it arrives. When Betrayal Breaks More Than Trust: How to Heal What the Relationship Broke
2026/07/13
Betrayal doesn’t only break trust in another person; it can also rupture your trust in yourself. In this episode, Vanessa explores why betrayal can feel so psychologically disorganizing, especially when harm comes from someone or something that was supposed to feel safe. We talk about betrayal trauma, betrayal blindness, attachment injury, projection, reality testing, and why not every devastating feeling is the same kind of event. The deeper healing is not becoming harder or more armored, but learning how to grieve specifically, see more clearly, and trust yourself again. Re-Nature with Clara Schroeder: Ecotherapy, Climate Grief, and Healing Our Bond with Nature
2026/07/06
In this episode, Vanessa sits down with Clara Schroeder, ecotherapist and author of Re-Nature: How Nature Helps Us Feel Better and Do Better, for a conversation about ecopsychology, climate grief, ritual, and the healing intelligence of the natural world. Together they explore why “we are nature” is not just a poetic idea, but a psychological and spiritual reality - and how separation from the earth mirrors separation from self, body, belonging, and ritual. They also discuss nature as a co-regulating presence, the specific grief that can follow climate or human-caused ecological disasters, and what it means to repair our attachment with the original mother. This is a conversation about remembering that nature is not outside of us; it is one of the oldest relationships we have. For educational purposes only. This isn’t therapy. Resources mentioned: Re-Nature by Clara Schroeder Use for: Guest’s book, Re-Nature: How Nature Helps Us Feel Better and Do Better. Are You Actually Healing, or Are You Trying to Become More Acceptable?
2026/07/01
What if some of what we call healing is actually an argument with the Self? In this episode, Vanessa explores the fantasy that enough therapy, coaching, spirituality, or self-development will eventually turn us into someone without friction: endlessly patient, available, social, regulated, and easy to love. Through Jung’s ideas of persona, Self, and shadow, along with research on self-discrepancy, ACT, self-compassion, and self-concept clarity, we look at the grief of realizing the idealized self may never arrive. The invitation is not resignation, but reality contact: meeting the actual self with enough honesty and tenderness to build a life that finally fits. Take the quiz here https://www.vanessabennett.com/space-holder-quiz Reference Links: • Carl Jung — Persona Use for: Persona as the social face / adaptation to society. Link: https://iaap.org/jung-analytical-psychology/short-articles-on-analytical-psychology/persona-2/ Note: This supports the episode’s distinction between persona/social acceptability and deeper wholeness. • Carl Jung — Shadow Use for: Shadow as hidden or repressed parts of the personality, including not only “dark” material but also instincts, reactions, insights, and creative impulses. Link: https://www.thesap.org.uk/articles-on-jungian-psychology-2/about-analysis-and-therapy/the-shadow/ Note: This supports the reframe that the shadow can include disowned sensitivity, need, rest, introversion, and unlived life. • E. Tory Higgins — Self-Discrepancy Theory Use for: Actual self, ideal self, and ought self; different emotional effects of falling short of the ideal vs ought self. Link: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/19545638_Self-Discrepancy_A_Theory_Relating_Self_and_Affect Note: Original 1987 theory connecting self-discrepancy with affect. • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy / Psychological Flexibility Use for: Acceptance as reality contact, not resignation; psychological flexibility as staying in contact with the present while moving toward values. Link: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3635495/ Note: Useful source for ACT and psychological flexibility. • Kristin Neff — Self-Compassion Use for: Self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness as the three core components of self-compassion. Link: https://self-compassion.org/what-is-self-compassion/ Note: Supports the episode’s point that acceptance without warmth can still become contempt. • D. W. Winnicott — The Capacity to Be Alone Use for: The capacity to be alone as developing through the experience of being alone in the presence of another. Link: https://pep-web.org/search/document/IJP.039.0416A Note: Supports the idea of presence without performance or agenda. • Campbell et al. — Self-Concept Clarity Use for: Self-concept clarity as clear, confident, consistent, and stable self-beliefs.
