Season 2 Episode 6 Idge Hehir Part 1
2026/08/28
Episode 6 of season 2 features Idge Hehir from the band 'The Flickering Stars' and Soundpark Studios in Northcote Melbourne, Australia.
This interview was done a while ago but it was worth the wait as it features some of the upcoming debut album "The Flickering Stars" by The Flickering stars. And if 'Blue Honey' and 'Clown Shoes' are anything to go by the album is going to be a killer. You can get ticket to the launch on the 20th of September 2026 here.
https://tickets.oztix.com.au/outlet/event/0174bbb5-0197-4ddb-97cc-c1c5a5f7714d
In part 1 we go through Idge's songwriting style, music that he paid attention 2 and a pretty cool first band sound. I was lucky enough to get some of Idge's earlier work too, so you will hear a little of how his sound has progressed in the last 25 years.
Since starting recording and engineering in Melbourne, out the back of Bakehouse in 2000, with a walk away with a CD in a day offer (which my band took up) Idge has been involved in recording some of MElbournes best known and unknown talent and has a mark on the Melbourne Music scene with at least 300 to 400 recordings including Dave Graney, The Basics, The Darling Downs, Hugo Race & The True Spirit, Amyl and the Sniffers and many more.

Sorry it has taken so long to get this wonderful interview to you all.
Life has definitely been happening in West Melbourne.
You will be seeing part 2 soon, like depending where you are it should already be out!

Season 2 Episode 5 Kira J Part 2
2026/05/02
Kira has an amazing story telling style in her song writing and just sitting with her on a cold Melbourne Summers day. She is a soul that finds music at 3am regularly and has some beautiful, moving, strong and delicate songs that we get to talk about in Part 2.
Sometimes being a musician means your hours are not the same as the 9 to 5 people and the quiet of the night or the start of a dream can get the creative spirits going. I find for me, I write a lot of songs in the shower which is not a handy way for someone with ADHD to remember them after.
In part 2 of Episode of 5 of Making of a Musician Kira explains how driven her father was for her to be successful in many things and I think he would be so proud at the passion she has developed for so many things including her talent on piano and guitar.
I am so privileged to get to share Kira’s story and song writing and the ups and downs of trying to be a mother and everything else. I loved getting to sing with her too and her influences are so wide and interesting too.
I do look forward to hearing her next recording featuring the Roddy Reid short listed song Slow it Down.
I hope you love listening to Kira and if you want to find out more or buy some of her music here are the links

Season 2 Episode 5 Kira J Part 1
2026/04/02
Kira J is a multi-instrumentalist, who brings her own style to each song she produces. In this episode Kira shares her fantastic songs and what inspired her work like ‘Winter in Budapest’ and ‘Lassiter’s reef’. And I am glad to know why there was a place called Lassiter’s in Neighbours.
Kira is an award winning songwriter and last year had 5 songs short listed in 5 different categories of the Australian Songwriting Competition! Part 1 explores Folk Festivals and how Kira has found being short listed and winning at Maldon Folk Festival and I try and make jokes about Port Fairy.
Listen to hear the different influences that have contributed to make Kira the amazing, funny musician she is today! Including being lucky to have a Dad being in a folk band back in the day.
This is another inspirational episode that can change your life too.

Season 2 Episode 4 Geoff Berry Part 1
2025/12/31
Commentary Podcast
Part 1 of this episode is dedicated to Richard Moffat; because I did not mention him in my favourite, inspiring, supportive radio presenters from back in the day on Triple R.
Where Art meets Post Punk is how Severins formed out of the early 90s. Where there was a boundary they wanted to push it and now 30 years on, you may hear if this perspective has changed..
The podcast touches on cancer and so if you are feeling a bit sad maybe catch part 2, or jump past the Ange-fest talkfest. It starts around 18m50s to 22m01s.
In Part 1 of Episode 4 Geoff Berry and I talk about the early formation of Severins after Gerry Sonts Tartan Hotpants went missing. If you don't know who Gerry Sont is, you might find out in this episode.
We also explore Sub-Terrain a venue Geoff ran in the late 90s that hosted some of the best unknown talent in Melbourne, including a moment about our favourite Melbourne pianist, Julitha Ryan.
You can also find out a few things more like which moment in time music first grabbed Geoff's attention.
Also sorry for the bad host, laughing, you find out why I laugh or it makes more sense halfway through the episode.

Season 2 Episode 3 Yolanda Ingley II Part 2
2025/12/06
Commentary Podcast
Yolanda has had such an interesting life and has seen bands that we could only imagine to have seen.
In Part 2 we continue were we left off in Part 1 https://omny.fm/shows/making-of-a-musician/season-2-episode-3-yolanda-ingley-ii-part-1
Yolanda talks about influences, singing, Australian bands playing randomly on a Wednesday afternoon in the 60s, how song writing happens, can happen and how it starts.
This episode also has a awesome story with a chance meeting with Paul McCartney. You will have to listen to see how this goes. Like a real chance encounter!
I now realise after my whole time on this Earth why my older brother is named Paul, after that Paul.
I can't talk really my youngest son is named after Miles Davis and the knowledge that Miles Brown from Art of Fighting was a nice guy.
Season 2 Episode 3 is dedicated to Steve Dagg.
You can hear him play in the Swinging Sidewalks in this playlist on youtube.

Season 2 Episode 3 Yolanda Ingley II Part 1
2025/12/03
Music Commentary Podcast.
This episode is dedicated to Steve Dagg.
Yolanda Ingley II has a story of migration, Australia and how women still are the back bone of successful men at the detriment to themselves and their talents. It is hard to find many men that would do the reverse.
Warning: We swear in this episode.
We all need to thank the wonderful Steve Dagg for bringing Yolanda out of the kitchen and into our speakers.
Yolanda has a voice to remember. A talent nearly lost to time and I wish everyone knew her songs.
If you ever think you are too old please listen, if you are sacrificing your soul for others maybe Yolanda can help you dream for more.
A story of how music can change paths, bring love and sorrow.
But it's better to be blue and have loved than not love at all.
I am so thankful for Billy Abbott from Season 1 Episode 1 for getting me in contact with Yolanda and being an awesome friend, like I am lucky to know him and have his support for this show and personally.
As usual I hope you like listening as much as I have enjoyed producing this episode.

S2 Episode 2 Part 2 - Mark James and Untidy Music
2025/11/10
The question I forgot to ask Mark the most, is did he ever ask his Mum when she found the guitar?
You will have to listen to find out why I would have that question.
In Part 2 of this chat with Mark James is where you can hear 2 musicians of the same age from different parts of the world talk about Music. Kristy explains to Mark the best things about Manchester music and Mark calls Brisbane a name she had not thought of and tells her why it has fantastic music.
This is an excellent episode where we talk learning instruments badly, song writing processes and how musicians think. Great Australian songs, comfort albums and best songs of all time are also included. Hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I enjoyed talking to Mark. Also his music is awesome!

S2 Episode 2 - Untidy Music's Mark James Part 1
2025/11/05
Episode 2 features Mark James from Salford in Great Manchester. Making of a Musician's first international guest!
As a fan of many bands from Manchester I really loved talking to Mark, who likes Australian music more than what comes from Manchester, and really who wouldn't except probably me.
He has an eclectic amount of music produced and created from punk guitar to ambient dark synth instrumentals to experimenting with themes like Halloween, he has a great musical story and such a wide range of musical taste from Glam to Grandaddy.
Listen to part 1 to see how his musical journey started and what impact Beach Boys had on him.
