Description

Recorded in Harvey the Short Bus and inspired by Own IT the live performing arts event in SLC, this podcast is an extension of a visceral experience of synergy. We are the artists, innovators and rebels with a cause. Our goal is to keep listening, questioning and bringing it to the mic. Harvey is a fully operational recording space on wheels. We invite people inside to share their writing, music, thoughts and stories. Our hope is to ignite the spark of art wherever we go. Hosted by SLC poet and recording artists Sarah Kappos this show is an exploration of how humans be, how they want to become and the role creativity plays in this evolution.

Stories of Isolation: Olivia Dudding Poet Laureate of Helper
2026/07/08
“Being a poet laureate is one of the coolest honors of my life. You can basically do whatever you want,” says Olivia Dudding. In this episode Sarah and Olivia reunite having met years ago at a writing table in Salt Lake; these two poets reflect on the differences between city and small town life. Olivia speaks about the hidden mycelial-like network of rural communities. For her the invitation to think about isolation is coupled with a revelation she’s recently had,“The more we think about a product the more we loose each other from the process.”  She is making an effort to go back to the process and to keep our roots to each other close. Stay until the end for the reading of two poems by Olivia. You can find her at the Helper Arts Festival in August where she will be hosting a storytelling event. Support the show
Stories of Isolation: Oran Stainbrook and Whiz Nguyen from Kenilworth UT
2026/07/07
This summer Harvey the bus went on the road. Funding from UHIP and partnership with USARA made possible a journey to Moab and Price/Helper to connect with rural areas.  The grant addresses social isolation as a health concern.  We met Oran in Kenilworth Utah population 200 located a few miles east of Helper. Orin’s response to social isolation was to buy the country store and turn it into an artist co-op space. He bought the store for $45,000 and has spent the last 8 years fixing up this 10,000 sq. foot building.  “My whole life this was my dream,” says Orin.  We also talk with Oran’s partner Whiz, a nomadic woodworking artist who has come home to Kenilworth. She talks about freedom in its many forms. First it was being a nomad living out of her truck and traversing the country 3 times. Now she is finding freedom in community where responsibility is shared and made lighter.  The conversation dives into spirituality, revolution, and what it is to hear your calling.  Oran is currently stirring the pot of AI in Carbon County and he’s doing it very thoughtfully. Stay tuned.  He’s organizing the Helper Arts Festival.  We will be there with Harvey the bus and the busker stage. Come see us.  Support the show
E 145 Mentor and Apprentice: Nan Seymour - Beloved Mentor of Sarah Kappos
2026/03/29
Sarah traveled to Tucson to sit in a casita with founder of River Writing and dear friend Nan Seymour.  She also planted a secret microphone to record their conversation, which delighted Nan!  The episode begins with a stunning read of the poem by Jacob Shores Arguello entitled The Names of Grasses which brings both women to tears. Follow these two lifelong poets into the catacombs of creativity where they discuss art which goes far beyond commodity and becomes a necessity.  The depth of their friendship and years spent writing together ripple with a sweet ease. Mack shares bubbling enthusiasm about her experience working with Mentor and Muse on their immersive artist workshop.  How did a song - that Phil originally hated - about vampires - become one of Mack's new hits?  Support the show

We've been following the career of local SLC rapper Menace since 2020. He always comes through with fresh music. Polyamory Bushwhacking to Nowhere: Why Do Men Lose Their Shit at Sporting Events? E137
2024/01/08
"It's not the expression of the emotion, it's the lack of control that I don't want," Phil. "Well, if you could control it, then you'd probably keep it under lock all the time, cuz you've got things to do, and they're inconvenient" Sarah. A conversation between two people with possibly the most inconvenient relationship...ah the irony. Also, have you noticed, the most passionate male outbursts often occur during the big game?  Uncontrollably! Spontaneously! Ah the irony... Stay tuned for part 2, we are gonna do some legit research into this question. Support the show
Polyamory Bushwacking to Nowhere: Why Are We Doing This? E136
2023/12/03
Sarah gets mad at Phil for a few things i.e. saying their relationship is non-linear, and preventing her from "dating."  They discuss living in different worlds, and the challenge of expressing different layers of  Sarah and Phil which could be called the "track stack" if you're a recording engineer.  So, how to live a domestic life, and express the other tracks.  The answer seems to be, make the leap and keep going cuz the grass isn't greener on the other side. "There's still some mystery, even for us, about what we are," Sarah.  Support the show
Polyamory Bushwhacking to Nowhere: E135
2023/10/25
Exploration of the parallel plot between Sarah n Phil and author Kahlil Gibran with his beloved Mary Haskell.   Maybe yin and yang truly are the most creative combo because many duos share a similar (often unwritten) story.  Why love someone and choose not to "be" with them?  This episode is sprinkled with excerpts from the book "Beloved Prophet" which is the correspondence and journal entries of Mary and Kahlil.  Until recently, it was unknown that she played an intimate role in the editing, writing and inspiration for his book "The Prophet."  Sarah reads the chapter "On Love" at the end of the episode from "The Prophet." Polyamory Bushwhacking to Nowhere: I Will Always Love You E134
2023/10/11
Reflections from their trip to Lake Powell where Phil n Sarah hosted an Own It show.  Their stage was the deck of a houseboat, their lights were tiki torches.  They were joined on stage by the person whom Sarah is currently dating.  She asks Phil, "What was that like for you?"  The answer is surprising, even to them.
