S2E1. "Vicinity" and the reimagined life
2021/04/03
In this episode, Outlander discussed the "vicinity" and urban life with two friends - Yun and Kon are graduates of University College London in Anthropology and Urban Planning. In their spare time, they often walked the streets together to observe the daily life in the community, and together they wrote the article "Vicinity and the Sense of Community in London Life". Building on their work, we decided to talk about our "vicinity" from the perspective of anthopology, media, and urban planning. Starting by sharing our personal experiences of urban migration, such as moving and travelling, we reconsidered our relationship with the neighbourhood and community and how it is affected by the pandemic.
Modern life in the Internet age is becoming more and more landscaped, and urban mobility nowadays has a linear pattern of from point to point. The renewed "vicinity" proposed by the Anthoropologist, Xiang Biao, is to pursue an organic combination of top-down planning and bottom-up action. The discovery of "vicinity" offers an alternative for people to communicate and connect in a diverse society.
