God has promised the presence and power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4-5, 8) 1 Corinthians 12:13 Luke 3:16 Ephesians 5:18 This promise can be summed up: where God guides, He provides. God has promised to make the nations glad! (Acts 1:8) This promised can be summed up: We go, sow, and water—but God alone brings life! God has promised that Jesus will come again (Acts 1:10-11)

Jesus’ Genealogy Providence: God is continually involved with all created things in such a way that He (1) keeps them existing and maintaining the properties with which He created them [Preservation]; (2) cooperates with created things in every action, directing their distinctive properties to cause them to act as they do [Concurrence]; and (3) directs them to fulfill His purposes [Government]. Preservation: “He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.” (Hebrews 1:3) Concurrence: God causes all that comes to pass—together with His creation. “[God] accomplished all things according to the counsel of His will.” (Ephesians 1:11) 1. Creation: For to the snow he says, “Fall on the earth, like wise to the downpour…“ (Job 37:6) From His chamber comes the whirlwind and cold from the scattering winds. (Job 37:9) Whether for correction of for His land or for love, He causes it to happen. (Job 37:13) 2. Animals: Look at the birds of the air, they neither reap nor gather into barns and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Matthew 6:26) 3. Random or “chance” events: The lot is cast into the lap, but the decision is wholly from the Lord. (Proverbs 16:33) 4. Primary and Secondary Causes: God=primary cause What is observed=secondary causes 5. Nations: Daniel 4:34–35 (ESV) — 34 At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and praised and honored him who lives forever, for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures from generation to generation; 35 all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, “What have you done?” Daniel 2:21 (ESV) — 21 He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding; 6. Every part of our lives: Isaiah 43:6–7 (NKJV) — 6 I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’ And to the south, ‘Do not keep them back!’ Bring My sons from afar, And My daughters from the ends of the earth— 7 Everyone who is called by My name, Whom I have created for My glory; I have formed him, yes, I have made him.” Concurrence and human choices: God causes all things to happen, but He does so in such a way that He somehow upholds our ability to make willing, responsible choices, choices that have real and eternal results, and for which we are held accountable. Government: God has a purpose in all He does in the world and He providentially governs or directs all things in order that they accomplish His purpose. Romans 8:28 (NKJV) — 28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. So, what?

Temptation to lose focus—stones to bread (2b-4) Satan tempted Jesus to use his powers for selfish gain 2. Temptation to switch loyalty—worship Satan and rule the nations (5-8) John 12:31 1 John 5:19 Satan tempted Jesus to switch loyalties and take a shortcut around the impending agony. He promised a crown without the cross 3. Temptation to abandon faith—put God to the test to prove His promise (9-12) The Devil tempted Jesus to validate God’s promise by setting God up and putting Him to the test. Take a shortcut and gain the people’s following as they see a miracle of gigantic proportions. III. Devil Departs (13) IV. Applications 1. Temptations entice us to take shortcuts. There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death (Proverbs 14:12) 2. Satan, the world system, and the flesh will oversell you that which they cannot deliver. 3a. The story of the yellow pad “…the more mature you are as a Christian, the more spiritually minded you are, the more righteous you are, the more sanctified you are, the more wretched you know you are, right? ... As you mature, you’ll sin less and feel worse because with the decrease of sin comes an increase of holiness, and with an increase of holiness comes a greater hatred of sin, and you sin less and hate it more.” (John MacArthur) So, what? The Trinity can be said to be one in essence and three in persons. Essence means “very nature.” Whatever qualities it takes to be God—the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have this essence. The essence includes all the attributes we know about God. The word “person” should not be confused with “people.” Hypostasis (person) = A unique communication/presentation of the divine essence God communicates/presents the divine nature in three unique ways—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. So, we say the Trinity means there is One God revealed in three persons (unique communications of the Divine Essence). The person of the Son: “The one divine person [Son], who possessed a divine nature from eternity, assumed a human nature, and now has both.” (Louis Berkhof) The Chalcedonian Creed (or Definition) of 451 AD The deity cannot share in human weaknesses; neither can man participate in any of the essential perfections [divine essence] of the Godhead. (Berkhof) Question: Since Jesus is God why did He need to pray? Answer: Jesus prayed because he was also completely human Why was it necessary for Jesus to be totally human? 1. Prayer is our conduit to God 2. We’re not good at corporate prayer 3. We’re not growing numerically or spiritually 4. We’re apparently satisfied with the status quo 5 Marks of a Healthy Church (Charles Spurgeon) -Purity of life (conversion) confirmed through membership examination; -The soundness of the gospel (sound doctrine); -The saved bond of brotherhood (unity); -Constant activity (devoted to good works); -Abounding in prayer. 5. We’re not desperate enough to pray desperately 6. Prayer is a vital ministry that excludes no one 7. Prayer correctly situates us with God 8. Prayer grows us closer/deepens church relationships 9. The enemy would desire us not to pray James 4:4–8a “When we work, we work. When we pray, God works!” Dr. Bill Bennett 10. There’s much that our Lord wants to give And when we entered on the larger speculation, as it seemed, of the Surrey Music Hall, what cries and tears went up to Heaven for our success! And so it has been ever since. It is in the spirit of prayer that our strength lies! And if we lose this, the locks will be shorn from Samson and the Church of God will become weal as water. And though, we, as Samson did, go and try to shake ourselves as at other times, we shall hear the cry. “The Philistines are upon you,” and our eyes will be put out, and our glory will depart unless we continue mightily and earnest in prayer.
