The eye is the lamp of the body, but this passage has often been pulled out of context and used as a warning about sexual purity, pornography, and “guarding your eyes.” In this episode of Kingdom on Foot, we look honestly at how these verses became a pillar of purity-culture teaching and why that reading misses the point Jesus is making. Send us Fan Mail What is Jesus really teaching about fasting in Matthew 6:16–18? In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus does not reject fasting. He rescues it from performance. In this video, we explore Matthew 6:16–18 in context by looking at fasting, hidden devotion, appetite, the Father who sees in secret, spiritual performance, Isaiah 58, and the deeper hunger beneath the body’s hunger. This is a deeper look at how fasting is not meant to make us impressive, but honest — not a stage for spiritual image, but a way of bringing our real hunger before God.  We also talk about why fasting is not hatred of the body, why it is not punishment, how it can expose the things that quietly master us, and why Jesus tells his disciples to wash their faces instead of turning devotion into theater. At its best, fasting becomes the body joining the soul in prayer. It becomes hunger turned toward the Father.  This passage is not just about giving something up. Send us Fan Mail What is Jesus really teaching in Matthew 6:5–13? In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus does not just teach us how to pray. He teaches us who we are praying to, why we pray, and what prayer becomes when it is no longer about performance. In this video, we explore Matthew 6:5–13 in context by looking at prayer in secret, the Father who sees, empty repetition, the Lord’s Prayer, God’s name, God’s kingdom, daily bread, forgiveness, temptation, and deliverance from evil. This is a deeper look at how Jesus moves prayer out of religious theater and back into relationship — not a show for others, not a technique to control God, but a child turning toward the Father.  We also talk about why Jesus warns against prayer as performance, why he warns against anxious babbling, what it means to pray “Our Father in heaven,” and how the Lord’s Prayer gathers together heaven and earth, holiness and hunger, forgiveness and weakness, trust and surrender. Send us Fan Mail What does Jesus really mean when he says to turn the other cheek? In Matthew 5:38–42, Jesus is not blessing abuse or telling the vulnerable to stay quiet. He is exposing the cycle of retaliation and calling his people into a deeper kind of freedom. In this video, we explore Matthew 5:38–42 in context by looking at “an eye for an eye,” turning the other cheek, giving your cloak also, going the second mile, generosity, retaliation, justice, and the world Jesus’ first hearers actually lived in. For many people, this passage hasn’t felt like good news. It’s been a source of confusion, shame, or even deep personal pain.
