As an independent vehicle inspector, I have my own perspective on how mileage fraud happens, why some vehicles are harder to investigate and what responsibility dealerships should take before selling a second-hand car. IS CAR CLOCKING ALREADY ILLEGAL IN THE UK? There is an important distinction between changing an odometer reading for a legitimate repair and deliberately misrepresenting a vehicle's mileage when selling it. Knowingly misrepresenting a vehicle's mileage can lead to prosecution under existing fraud and consumer protection legislation. But does that mean the current law is sufficient, or could additional regulation make mileage fraud easier to prevent and prosecute?

How should a good used car dealer sell a 14-year-old BMW Z4? In this video, I show you a real example from CC Trading Ltd and explain what an independent pre-purchase inspection revealed. The vehicle was being sold by CC Trading Ltd, and this inspection provides a useful example of what buyers should expect from a professional used car dealer. The BMW was presented in excellent cosmetic condition for its age, with a clean vehicle history check, strong service history and no evidence of significant accident damage.

Ever wondered what actually happens when an independent vehicle inspector turns up at a major used car retailer? In this video, I visit Motorpoint Car Supermarket to carry out a vehicle inspection on behalf of a customer considering purchasing a used car. The inspection process starts before I begin examining the engine, suspension or other mechanical components. On arrival, I first establish the vehicle's details and review the documentation and information available for the car. This can involve confirming identification details, checking the VIN, looking through available service records, reviewing MOT information and making sure the vehicle presented for inspection corresponds with the information supplied to the buyer. Once these initial checks are completed, I can move on to assessing the actual condition of the vehicle. I take you along for the visit so you can see a genuine pre-purchase inspection from an inspector's point of view, including the dealership arrival, initial checks and the process that takes place before the detailed inspection gets underway. When buying a used vehicle, even from a large established car supermarket, it is important to understand exactly what you are purchasing. A professionally presented car can still have previous repairs, maintenance requirements, mechanical problems or other issues that may not be immediately apparent during a normal viewing or test drive. A pre-purchase vehicle inspection gives the buyer another layer of information before deciding whether to proceed with the purchase.

What can an experienced vehicle inspector tell about a used car before the full vehicle inspection even begins? In this video, we arrive at the dealership and take a first look at the vehicle before starting the detailed CarExamer inspection. The inspection process begins with observation. How the car is presented, its general condition and the small details visible on arrival can provide useful clues about its history, maintenance and previous use. Before carrying out the full inspection, an inspector may already notice: • General bodywork and exterior condition• Paint finish and panel alignment• Signs of previous bodywork or accident repairs• Tyre condition and unusual wear patterns• Visible leaks or fluid marks• Signs of poor maintenance or neglect• Dashboard warning lights• Differences between the vehicle and its advertisement• Areas that may require closer investigation None of these observations alone determines whether a car is worth buying. Instead, they help build an initial picture of the vehicle and highlight areas that deserve particular attention during the full inspection. A used car can look excellent in photographs and make a strong first impression on the dealer forecourt. The important question is whether that impression still holds up once an independent inspector starts looking properly. This is where the inspection begins.
