Pico Masala: How I Built an Entire Restaurant Empire (That Never Existed)
2025/07/01
Read the full document: https://juandavidcampolargo.substack.com/p/pico-masala-how-i-built-a-restaurant
So a while back, the owners of this upcoming grab-and-go restaurant reached out. They had leased a space but had literally nothing else—no branding, website, marketing plan, or vision for selling the concept.
They were starting from absolute scratch.
They asked me to figure it out.
So I took their blank slate and turned it into what you’ll see below—a complete end-to-end masterplan covering:
Market Analysis (student demographics, competitor research, peak hours, customer behavior)
Customer Personas (clearly defined, data-driven customer profiles, targeted segments, marketing strategies)
Branding & Naming (Developed a memorable name: Pico Masala, culturally-rich logo design, visual identity, color palette, typography, and symbolism)
Physical Space Design (multiple interior concepts for store layout and aesthetic themes, cost breakdowns, and built-in virality)
Digital Experience (mobile-friendly website, branded app, subscription model, entire tech stack)
Immersive Storytelling (Created an original narrative/story, multilingual fusion song & music video concept, detailed visual storytelling ideas to build emotional connection and customer loyalty
Marketing Roadmap (strategic launch timeline, campus activations, creative campaigns like the “No Biryani for B’s” GPA guarantee, and other high-impact marketing campaigns)
Scalable Business Model (subscription strategy, expansion plans, clear exit strategy)
Additional Revenue Ideas (international snacks, fusion drinks, future market expansions)
It’s detailed, honestly, maybe too detailed, but I wanted to write down everything needed to make this a standout business that people actually care about, remember, and talk about.
Well, in the end, we didn’t move forward working together. But that’s okay! I had a ton of fun working on this project, and since I genuinely enjoyed creating it, I thought, why not share it with the world?
So, here it is.
If you’re working on your own business and feel like it could use more personality, a clearer vision, or just needs to be more exciting so it actually sells, reach out, maybe we can work together.
Or honestly, if you just want to steal some ideas from here, go right ahead, the name, the branding, whatever you like.
And finally, if this whole Pico Masala idea grabs you and you’re thinking, “Wow, someone should seriously make this happen,” well, also happy to help.
Anyway, enjoy!

Memorable Quotes
"Sometimes this rise for Aesthetics comes from sometimes a lack of self-understanding."
"Aesthetic is important, perhaps not necessary, but it's important but it's not sufficient. Even if it is necessary, it is not sufficient."
"If you cannot explain it to your grandma, you didn't understand it." -
"We can know without understanding, we can understand without knowing, but if we understand what we know that would be a lot better for us and the world."
"What's the mission of the University? To disseminate knowledge or to try to make this knowledge understandable."
"If we don't have a minimum of understanding, I think we don't have education. We have instruction, but this is not education, let alone higher education."
"The more you apply knowledge, the more you understand the knowledge. Are we doing that in our universities?"
"How do we create a cultural movement of intrinsic curiosity? Because the culture is what moves and creates the change which that what we're looking for."

The Dangers of Aestheticized Education: A Critique of Superficial Learning Practices
2024/09/13
The 28th World Multi-Conference on Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics: WMSCI 2024https://www.iiis2024.org/wmsci/Website/default.asp?vc=109/13/2024Memorable quotes:"Universities are focused on the transmission of knowledge. How about understanding?""If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what then is an empty desk a sign?" -Albert Einstein"Curiosity plus exploration is not the same thing as just searching for the satisfaction or completion of Education""How can we create more environments to allow people to follow their curiosity without hesitation? It's one of the most important questions that we can ask ourselves today.""You don't need to go to school or have a PhD in aerospace engineering or whatever you think you need. You can again [follow] curiosity and find that passion." Comment related to Boom Supersonics. "How do we create a culture of meaningful exploration that prepares students for lifelong learning, not just getting a degree, never reading a book anymore, never having an independent thought or question after they finish?""Let us have dream and pay the cost of making our dreams come true""I learn from them more than what they learned from me, especially because what they learn from me is in the books. What I learned from my students is not in the books."
Abstract:Aestheticized education is an approach that places undue emphasis on the aesthetic aspects of learning, often overshadowing the fundamental objectives of intellectual development and critical inquiry. This phenomenon has become increasingly pervasive in contemporary educational environments, particularly through the rise of social media platforms that promote a "study aesthetic." These platforms celebrate visually appealing study setups, meticulously organized notes, and the portrayal of continuous productivity. However, this trend risks reducing the educational experience to a performative act, where the appearance of studying becomes more important than the substance of learning itself. In this abstract, I argue that aestheticized education fosters a superficial engagement with educational content, where students are more concerned with the completion of tasks and the visual presentation of their work than with the depth of their understanding. The focus shifts from curiosity-driven exploration and the intrinsic value of knowledge to the external validation of meeting aesthetically pleasing standards. This shift not only undermines the development of critical thinking skills but also encourages a narrow, checklist-driven approach to education. To counteract the negative impacts of aestheticized education, this critique advocates for a transdisciplinary dialogue that seeks to reintegrate aesthetic considerations with substantive educational practices. By exploring the intersection of aesthetics and education, we can develop strategies that maintain the appeal of learning environments without compromising the intellectual rigor necessary for true educational growth. The goal is to inspire a rethinking of how aesthetics and education can coexist in a manner that enhances, rather than detracts from, the learning experience.
