From Bionic Knees to GB Kit: Derek Highe’s Triathlon Journey
2026/10/28
Send us Fan Mail On the Latest Episode we welcome Derek High.  Derek says "In my early years I both ran and swam for my school but football took over from the age of 16 to 43  The down side to that was I developed arthritis in both knees and had to have my left knee replaced at 50 years old. My right knee was replaced when I was 59. It left me thinking my sporting days were over until just by chance a good friend of mine asked me to go to Brighton to watch Huddersfield Town versus Brighton at their last ever game at The Withdean stadium in 2011 where Huddersfield Towns ‘Pedals for pounds’ charity cycle ride  ended. Having watched all the cyclists come in I said to my wife, ‘ if they do another one next year I will enter to test my knee’ and also raise money for the Yorkshire air ambulance.  I signed up the next year which was Yeovil to Huddersfield and started training for the ride but realised my back needed strengthening so went back to swimming at my local leisure centre .  Over the following years we raised Millions for local charities cycling through Europe and within Great Britain.  In May 2022 my wife and I went to Lanzarote on holiday and by coincidence Ironman was on in Peurto Del Carmen. We watched the athletes come in and I was totally blown away by everyone who competed from the pro’s to the amateurs and I felt I wanted to be part of something so amazing. Having both knees replaced at this point I had always been told that I shouldn’t run again but I contacted my surgeon who said that if I didn’t do any twisting movements then ‘give it a go’ !!  I started to run short distances and worked my way up to training towards a 70.3 Outlaw event. I realised I needed to join a local triathlon club so joined Huddersfield Triathlon Club who were a major support in guiding me to my goal. On 21.5.23 I did my first 70.3 and came second in my age group, I was absolutely so proud when I crossed that finish line  Team members started to point out that my times would get me in to the GB Age team so in 2024 I started to take part in GB qualifiers, at the end of that summer I just missed out so on 31.12.24 I decided, no more alcohol chocolate  and healthy eating, within 4 months I had dropped 1.5 stone and qualified for the  Standard Tri in Tarragona June 2026 and the Aqua Bike Worlds in Pontevedra September 2026. With my knees standing up to all this training I now run park runs every Saturday morning and enter various 10K’s around the country." Hope this is a journey that inspires others and it  would be great to feature in your podcasts." From the Flying Doctors to Triathlon World Champion! | Ruth Bullen
2026/10/14
Send us Fan Mail Ruth Bullen reveals her journey from hockey and life in Australia to becoming a Great Britain age-group triathlon world champion. From the school hockey pitch to the world stage, Ruth Bullen’s journey has taken her across the globe. Ruth played hockey from her school days until triathlon took over and she hung up her stick. She later made a life in Australia, where she was part of the Flying Doctors team, and she represented Australia as an age-grouper. Then came a big change: she came home to the UK, switched allegiance, and went on to become an age-group triathlon world champion for Great Britain. In this episode, Ruth talks about moving from team sport to triathlon, what life in the outback taught her about resilience, and what it felt like to pull on a different national kit and win on the world stage. Whether you’re a seasoned racer, a former team-sport player thinking about a new challenge, or just curious about what makes a champion, there’s something here for you. Swimming, Biking, and Studying - The Conor Orchard Story
2026/09/30
Send us Fan Mail Great to Welcome Conor Orchard to the pod, although, still young he has been doing Triathlon since he was 8. Great to hear his Journey so far. Balancing a university degree with triathlon training is no small feat, but 20-year-old Conor takes it in stride. Competing since the age of eight, Conor currently trains with the University of Nottingham’s development squad and has already experienced the absolute highs and brutal lows of international age-group racing. In this episode, Conor walks us through his incredible age-group victory at the European Championships in Istanbul, and the devastating moment a bike puncture ruined his title defense in Tarragona after a dominant lead-out in the swim. Rather than letting a mechanical DNF define his season, Conor shares how he channeled that frustration into progress—successfully tackling his first 70.3 distance with a 4th place finish at Swansea, and setting his sights on World Championship qualification at Barry. What you'll hear in this episode: The Student-Athlete Grind: How Conor manages a rigorous university schedule alongside high-volume development squad training. The Anatomy of a Champion: The training and mindset required to win European Gold.Mental Resilience: Processing the heartbreak of a mechanical failure while defending a major title.Going Long: The physical and tactical adjustments needed to step up to the grueling 70.3 distance. The Road to Barry: What it takes to secure a spot at the World Championships. Conor says"I’m 20 years old, training with the development squad at the University of Nottingham alongside my degree. I have been competing regionally and nationally since the age of 8. Last year, I won my age group at the European Championships in Istanbul and went to Tarragona this year hoping to defend my title. I actually led out of the water but punctured on the bike immediately so I couldn’t finish.  Since then, I have qualified for next year’s European Championships and I am also targeting qualification for the World Championships at Barry. This year I have also started racing some 70.3 distance including at Swansea where I finished 4th in my age group. Stuart Hackman - 10 Years of Triathlon & The GB Age-Group Journey
2026/09/16
Send us Fan Mail This week on the Agegroup Podcast, I’m joined by Stuart Hackman, who has spent the last decade pushing himself in endurance sport and building an impressive age-group racing career. Stuart has just completed his 50th competitive multi-sport race at Ironman Austria — a pretty incredible milestone in itself. Over the years, he’s taken on more than 120 events, including two London Marathons, three RideLondon events and the Serpentine Swim, which helped him complete his London Classic. But it’s his journey representing GB at age-group level that makes this story particularly interesting. By the end of this year, Stuart will have competed in five GB events, from the Duathlon World Championships in Alavés in 2021 through to the upcoming Long Distance World Championships in Zofingen. And there could be another big one on the horizon… Stuart has also qualified for the T100 World Championship in Qatar, which could potentially take his GB appearances to six. In this episode, we talk about the journey behind those races — the training, the commitment, the highs and lows, qualifying for GB, and what keeps you coming back for more after ten years in the sport. Whether you're already racing as an age-grouper, thinking about taking that next step, or simply interested in what it takes to keep challenging yourself year after year, this is a great story of consistency, ambition and the pursuit of the next finish line. 🎧 Listen to the full episode now. Swim Bike Subscribe - Life Behind the YouTube Camera with Triathlon Dan
2026/09/02
Send us Fan Mail Daniel Ward, widely known across the multi-sport community as "TriathlonDan," is a prominent UK-based amateur triathlete, cyclist, and content creator. He documents his athletic pursuits on the TriathlonDan YouTube Channel, where he has built a dedicated following by sharing raw, down-to-earth training vlogs, race debriefs, and gear insights. Before finding his passion for multi-sport, Dan underwent an incredible health transformation. He successfully dropped his body weight from 127 kg down to roughly 85–90 kg, credits triathlon with saving him from obesity, and actively pushes the message that you do not need to look like a "chiselled fitness guru" to conquer difficult endurance challenges. Calling himself an "amateur exerciser," he balances a full-time career and relationships while training heavily in cycling and middle-to-long distance triathlon. He is a massive cycling enthusiast who also participates in local crit racing and road time trials. For the 2025 and 2026 seasons, Dan shifted parts of his calendar toward domestic racing, local bike crits (such as racing at Darley Moor), and balancing content creation you can follow Dan on Instagram @heyyydw on Youtube  @TriathlonDan   on Facebook @Daniel Ward You Can find the 1001 Triathlon Tips using this link - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0GX39Z7P5 follow us on Instagram - AMP_podcast Facebook Richard Joseph Conway Youtube - AMP GB Support the show

2026/08/19
Send us Fan Mail Welcome back to the podcast, its been a minute Before standing atop the European triathlon podium, Ross McGregor was tearing up beaches in the high-adrenaline world of sand racing. Triathlon wasn’t anywhere on his radar—until a tragic loss prompted him to enter his very first event for charity. That single race transformed his life. In this powerful episode, the 35–39 Great Britain Age-Group European Champion shares how he redirected his competitive grit from the sand tracks to the triathlon circuit. He opens up about turning personal tragedy into elite purpose, breaking down the exact mindset, training consistency, and race-day tactics that carried him all the way to European Gold. "Running Out of Excuses: Blenheim to Team GB with Kev Appleton"
2026/07/22
Send us Fan Mail Welcome back to another episode of AMP. This episode features Kev Appleton, GB Agegrouper and fellow YouTuber. Kev says "My Triathlon Journey started in 2017 when i was persuaded to enter the Blenheim Palace Sprint Triathlon in 2018. A year of training to get from over weight and unfit to to some kind of fitness I completed taht first Sprint race and was well and truly bitten by the bug. Later in 2018 I had my second triathlon but stepped up to Standard Distance at Woburn Abbey.  Over the next few years I competed in several sprint Triathlons and returned to Blenheim again in 2020 and 2021 I was soon stepping up again to 70.3 with Outlaw X, Outlaw Nottingham Half and Outlaw 70.3 Holkham, Ironman 70.3 Duisburg all completed. In 2023 we entered a Relay Team into Outlaw X with my employer Chairman and colleague we finished an amazing 3rd Place with a combined age of 167 years!  Finally running out of excuses I'd entered the Outlaw Full in 2023. This was my first "Iron" Distance, wasn't to be my last though as I now "had" to do an "Ironman" race so Barcelona was the target for 2024. Earlier in 2024 as part of my training I completed Wales Long Course Weekend in Tenby. 2025 I committed to a year of Sprint Distance racing with the intention of qualifying for the age group Team in Banyoles 2026. Making the Aquathlon Team is a great honour for me and has increased the determination to qualify for Sprint and Standard distance Teams for World and European Championships in 2027" follow Kev's journey on his YouTube channel:  https://www.youtube.com/@SwimBikeRunKev Follow on instagram @nivek4628 You Can find the 1001 Triathlon Tips using this link - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0GX39Z7P5 follow us on Instagram - AMP_podcast Facebook Richard Joseph Conway Youtube - AMP GB Support the show
Chasing Podiums: The Alice Lucas Interview
2026/07/08
Send us Fan Mail Welcome back to the podcast, on this episode we chat to Alice Lucas,  Alice says "My sporting background has been a little stop start.  As one of two girls, my mum encouraged (pushed!) us both into ballet and dancing, which I loved socially but was a disaster at.  Meanwhile, Dad was a sub 3hr marathon runner and competitive triathlete, who I idolised!  I started running at 18 - primarily to lose weight - and did my first triathlon in my early 20s on my early teenage mountain bike, but came 3rd in my AG and loved it.   Fast forward a decade or so, and I joined a running (with a hint of triathlon) club in London and had a couple of years of very amateur racing, with a strong running focus.  2020 was to be my year - unexpected ballot place in the London Marathon after 15 years of trying, several triathlons in the calendar, a 300km ride in Sweden and my first 70.3.  Alas - 2020 was no one’s year!  Sort of fell off the wagon, but moving to Bath in 2022 reignited my excitement for the sport and I joined the world’s best tri club (while I acknowledge I’m biased, I wholeheartedly believe this to be true!).  Working with an equally epic PT, I set the goal of AG racing.  I told anyone who would listen, and worked to overcome fear on the bike (work in progress), improve technique in the water (ditto) and speed up my run (there’s a theme here). Eventually raced my first MD last June and landed a qualifying time which took me to Alsdorf for the European MD Duathlon Champs last month, which was a sensational experience! I’m nothing if not ambitious - still have a LOT of work to do across all disciplines, a lot of kit to upgrade and many years of this sport ahead of me.  But objective one unlocked, proof that mindset and psychology are huge factors in any competitive sport (and business for that matter), and game on to see how far I can take this! The Para-Athlete Conquering the Able-Bodied Field with Sophie West (PTS5)
2026/05/27
Send us Fan Mail Welcome back to AMP its our great pleasure to welcome Dr Sophie West. Sophie says "I spent most of my adult life up to 2020 being told not to run or do impact sports, alongside having multiple surgeries and hospital admissions due to having my whole pelvis reconstructed due to my hip joints not having developed properly, on of the breaks they made in my pelvic bones never healed, hence the advice not to run. It’s actually left me with pretty stiff hips that have weakness and some nerve damage around the hips. I also work full time in the NHS as a doctor. Anyway after two pregnancies just in time for the start of Covid that bone, after 9 years healed! So I started running in Covid. We moved out of london in 2022 and at the end of 2023 I decided that 2024 would be the year I tried to do a triathlon. Started with a pool based swim one and…..won my age group, I had already left before the awards as it just didn’t even occur to me that I could have won! Through British triathlon I got assessed and was given a paratriathlon classification of PTS5. My second ever race was the British paratriathlon championships where I won silver (behind the awesome Claire Cashmore), and went on to win gold in 2025. Alongside earning myself aQT for both Europeans and worlds age group aquathlon championships where I came 7th and 11th respectively- not bad for a para athlete in an able bodied field. I have also now won the British paraduathlon championships in 2025 and 2026. All para stuff is sprint or super sprint. My goals for this year are to try some longer distances - I am doing the escape from Alcatraz triathlon (a bucket list item I didn’t know I wanted ) a standard distance triathlon and duathlon. And maybe take on a 70.3 next year. Also new for this year British triathlon have just published QTs for para-entry at multisport events so watch this space on that one. I’m also hoping to do the world aquathlon championships in Abu Dhabi in November, and trying to get a QT in aquathlon, sprint and standard distance duathlon for Edmonton. I’m also a mum to 6 and 10 year old boys. And yes, my life is completely bonkers! I think it would be interesting as a para-athlete in the age group team which is quite unusual and not too many of us!  I also get swimming induced pulmonary oedema to add to the complexity of things! But also im still really new to the sport which I hope would inspire others." you can follow Sophie on instagram @doctorsophie82 You Can Follow us  on YouTube - AMP GB Instagram @amp_podcast Facebook : Richard Joseph Conway find all our episodes on our website Website is : https://agegroupmultisportpodcast.buzzsprout.com/ email: [email protected] You Can buy the 1001 Triathlon Tips using this link - https://www.amazon.com/1001-TRIATHLON-TIPS-essential-triathlon-ebook/dp/B0GX39Z7P5/ref=zg_bsnr_g_16592_d_sccl_10/141-4765249-6496905?psc=1 Support the show

The Transition: How Paul's background as an age-group competitor shaped his coaching philosophy.
2026/04/08
Send us Fan Mail Today, we are diving deep into the science of speed and the nuances of endurance with a guest who has been at the forefront of the UK triathlon scene for years. Joining us is Paul Gardner, a performance coach and competitor whose credentials speak for themselves. Paul was a true pioneer in the industry, becoming the very first person in the UK to pass the BTF Diploma in Triathlon Coaching. 24 in 24 The Mark Walford Story
2026/03/25
Send us Fan Mail welcome to the latest episode on this episode we speak to Mark Walford Mark says "I joined a triathlon club in late 2019 (aged 35) having taken up open water swimming after spending most of my youth playing football but after having kids less and less exercise and an increasing waistline, I did some running but my knees was aching so trained up to do iron distance swim then 10km swim, and joined tuff fitty. Then covid happened no swimming but the club was good at encouraging safe exercise, i had an old bike i never rode, got it serviced and that was the start of my cycling. I set myself a target of qualifying for aquathon as my cycling wasn't much.  I had entered Eastbourne sprint which became a qualifier much to my surprise I and qualified for Montreal in 2022. Next few years training more and more i qualified and raced Montreal world sprint tri 2022 Bilboa European aquathon 2022 Madrid European sprint tri (change to duathlon) Hamburg world sprint tri  2023 Menin European aquathon 2024  Torremolinos world sprint tri 2024 My results have been top 10-30 out of 40-100 participants, nothing to set the world alight. However im potentially best know because last year i completed 24 SuperSprint triathlons in 24 hour (starting on the hour ever hour) raising over £4000 of Alzheimer's research uk. This hadn't been done before, subsequently someone from Finland attempted a work record of how many they could do in 24 hours making and completed 18. During this process i got a local school involved and they did a multisport festival for the kids to get into it." you can follow Mark on Instagram @24hourtri Facebook : Mark Walford You Can Follow us  on YouTube - AMP GB Instagram @amp_podcast Facebook : Richard Joseph Conway find all our episodes on our website Website is : https://agegroupmultisportpodcast.buzzsprout.com/ email: [email protected] If you are an agegroup athlete and would like to come on the pod, get in touch. Alison Waters - Phobia-Finisher. Slaying the Water & The European Championships
2026/03/11
Send us Fan Mail Welcome Back to The Agegroup Multisport Podcast, this episode feature Alison Waters.  Alison says "  I got into tri in 2019 but then covid stopped me from entering my first race until 2021. A few middle distance and one long distance later and I qualified for the European Long Distance Tri champs in Almere in Sept 2024 which was an amazing experience - it was only my second full distance tri.  I’m in my early 50s, mum of two, not from a triathlon or athletic background but I got into running in my 40s. I couldn’t swim a few years ago so had to learn and overcome a massive fear of water to even consider triathlon. So basically from zero to representing GB! A great reminder to anyone even if you haven't had a sporting childhood its never too late to achieve.
