This is the first episode of three which will be dedicated to the Water's Edge Museum located in Oxford, Maryland. As the museum's website states, The Water’s Edge Museum was established to tell the story of "...The Founding Black Families of America who harnessed knowledge and power, and placed it firmly and confidently into the hands of their descendants." Oxford was chosen as the location for the museum due to Oxford being the only documented arrival port for the Middle Passage, one of the trade routes during the years of the American and European slave trade. Troy Brohawn coaches the Salisbury University baseball team. Under his leadership, the team and coaching staff won the first NCAA Division III Baseball National Championship. Prior to this, Coach Brohawn led his high school alma mater to a state championship. And, even before that, in 2001, he won a World Series as a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks. As far as we can tell, Brohawn is the only person to achieve these three championships in their career. The story is from the 2019 edition, and is titled Why Real Men Cry at Boston Symphony Hall. It's a story about a boy and his grandma and their love for John Williams, the famed American composer. Dr. Kirkland Hall joined Delmarva's Own Podcast in February as the last conversation for episodes directly related to Black History Month. So, we're a bit late getting this one out. Dr. Hall spent his life and career as an educator, community activist, and minister. Frankly, this description does a disservice to the amount of work Dr. Hall has done in the Delmarva community, particularly in the lower Eastern Shore of Maryland. He also played baseball on a historically black baseball team which originated early in the 1900's. Dr. Hall tells us about his time playing on the team and the way black baseball teams impacted communities on Delmarva. This episode is about former enslaved person, abolitionist leader and Underground Railroad Conductor, Harriet Tubman. Harriet grew up in bondage in the area of Cambridge, Maryland. I met with Lawson Nwakudo, a guide at the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park to discuss Harriet's earliest years, when she would have been known as Araminta "Minty" Ross. We talk about her birth, the tasks she performed while enslaved and the injury that almost killed her. As it turns out, this injury may have been the turning point for little Minty, and placed her on a trajectory that would help change America. This week we are joined by Dr. Clara Small to help us begin to dig in to the vast treasure-trove of history available to us.   Dr. Small is a historian who has dedicated her life to telling the story of black Americans from Delmarva. Professor Emeritus at Salisbury University, Hall spent 36 years teaching history in courses including World Civilizations, Civil Rights in American Society, African American History and related topics. It might be argued that she is the region's foremost scholar on the history of Black America on the Delmarva Peninsula. Dr. Small has authored or co-authored 7 books, with her 8th due out before the leaves bud out on the trees this spring. Titles include: Reality Check: Brief Biographies of African-Americans on Delmarva Compass Points: Profiles & Biographies of African Americans from the Delmarva Peninsula, Volumes 1,2, & 3 [Publication Forthcoming] Co-Authored: Men of Color: To Arms!
