Episode 270 | Maintaining Weight Loss After Overcoming Food Addiction with Dr. Susan Pierce Thompson, PhD
2026/04/20
In today's episode of Psych Talk I chat with Dr. Susan Pierce Thompson, PhD, Professor of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, NYT Best Selling Author, and Founder and CEO of Bright Line Eating about maintaining weight loss when having a food addiction. Dr. Pierce Thompson shares her own journey with addiction and food addiction and the tools she has used to maintain her own weight loss and overcome her food addiction. We discuss what Bright Line Eating is and what inspired her to create it, as well as her fifth book Maintain: The Three Identity Shifts that Turn Temporary Weight Loss into Lasting Freedom, that comes out in April 2026. We discuss some common misconceptions when it comes to lasting weight loss, as well as mistakes or missteps individuals take when it comes to weight loss. Dr. Pierce Thompson discusses the role mindset plays in lasting weightless and why emotion regulation skills are essential for lasting weight loss in those who struggle with food addiction. Dr. Pierce Thompson directs listeners to the Food Addiction Quiz to help guide them in determining what level of support they may need when it comes to weight loss. We also discuss how weight loss is not a one size fits all approach and people are going to need various levels of support or various strategies to help them based on their individual needs. Dr. Fuller shares her lifelong journey with social justice and how it led her to the work she does today. We discuss racism and other "isms" when it comes to mental health care and disparities seen in mental health care and treatment because of these "isms". We spend some time discussing eating disorders in Black women and disparities these individuals face. Dr. Fuller discusses how clinicians can address racism in mental health systems and treatment and we broaden the discussion to patterns of anti-blackness across medicine, academia, and business. We discuss systems changes that need to be made if institutions are actually interested in diversity, equity and inclusion, as well as steps that can be taken to advocate for marginalize communities. We also discuss allyship in non-Black individuals. Episode 263 | How Digital Culture Erodes Our Identity with Patricia Martin
2026/03/02
In today's episode of Psych Talk I chat with Patricia Martin, cultural analyst, researcher, and speaking about how digital culture erodes our identity. We start the conversation by discussing Patricia's book Will the Future Like You? Reflection on the Age of Hyper-reinvention; what it is about and what inspired her to write it. We discuss how constantly being online erodes our identity and Patricia discusses three forces upending the development of identity - persona fog, chronic self-doubt, and cascading crossroads. We discuss the concept of hyper-reinvention and how it disconnects us from the core of who we are, in addition to how the cyber world leads to self-alienation. We end the discussion by Patricia sharing some of the things we can be doing to help ourselves identify who we really are in this digital culture. In today's episode of Psych Talk I speak with Destiny Davis, LPC, CRC about chronic illness and medical trauma. Destiny shares about her journey into specializing in chronic illness as a therapist and her personal experiences with chronic illness. Throughout the discussion, Destiny defines for listeners what chronic illness is, as well as what medical trauma is. We discuss some examples of types of medical traumas, as well as common symptoms that may indicate someone has experienced medical trauma. Katie discussed her journey in to specializing in working with high risk teens and families and why she is so passionate about this population. Katie defines what a "high risk teen" is and why traditional therapy approaches often do not work with this population. We discussed the most common traps therapists fall in with high risk teens and how therapists can avoid them. We also discuss how therapists can collaborate with parents to help their high risk teens while also maintaining the teen's trust and confidentiality in therapy. Katie shares some practical frameworks and models that are effective in helping high risk teen, as well as effective ways to safety plan with a high risk teen. William defines for listeners what CTE is and what he feels is missing from the definition given his work with people who have experienced CTE symptoms. William discusses his personal journey with CTE symptoms from years of bobsledding and the subsequent consequences of these symptoms. He discusses the progression of CTE and some of the devastating consequences of such, especially for individuals who do not get treatment. William discusses what Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is and how it has helped his CTE symptoms. William shares what he believes needs to be done to both decrease the likelihood of individuals developing CTE and increasing access to supports after multiple brain injuries and discusses his Go Fund Fund me and mission to open a CTE Recovery Center. Episode 258 | Collective Trauma & Health Equity with Dr. Christy Gibson, MD
2026/01/26
In today's episode of Psych Talk, I chat with Dr. Christy Gibson, MD about collective trauma and health equity. Dr. Gibson shares about her journey into specializing in trauma and defines for listeners what trauma is. Dr. Gibson shares the two main trauma responses according to polyvagal theory, as well as defines collective trauma and how it differs and is similar to trauma experienced by an individual. We discuss how communities can enhance their resilience after experiencing a collective trauma and how somatic therapies can aid individuals who have experienced trauma.
