The last thing we expected to arrive in ye ol' Kingcast mailbox was an email from Disney+ saying "hey, we think there's a Stephen King connection you might like in our super popular family-friendly cartoon series." Thankfully they did reach out, though, because we ended up with this delightful chat with Big City Greens's co-creator, Shane Houghton, who arrived to fill us in on getting King himself on as a cameo in their brand new Halloween episode. We talk about what it was like for a die hard King fan to work with his favorite author, how King has repeatedly reintroduced himself to new generations going back to the early '80s, and all the King connections in this new episode. This past weekend The Kingcast held a live show at Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX. The guest was genre filmmaker Mike P. Nelson who was at the fest for his new flick, a giant killer snake tale called Beware Boiuna starring Jessica Rothe, Kiana Madeira, and Kingcast alum Logan Marshall-Green. It must also be noted that Mike was just announced as the director taking over the SAW franchise. He's a good dude and joined Vespe on stage at the raucous Highball to talk a bit about Joe Hill and Stephen King's collaboration: Throttle, a story he's actively trying to get the rights to. We also pit his huge constrictor antagonist from Beware Boiuna against some large Stephen King creations and talk through who might come out on top. It's a fun chat with a noisy crowd, the exact kind of thing you expect from a live show. Children of the Corn continues to be a Stephen King staple after all these years so it's fitting that the Kingcast boys get a chance to corner actor and musician Courtney Gains to talk about his experiences playing the red-headed, scythe-wielding, teenage rapscallion Malachai. Of course we also talk about some of his other endeavors as well, from his latest album, Liberation Day (available now), to his memorable turn as one of the mysterious Klopeks in Joe Dante's The 'Burbs.  Courtney was never less than open about his career experiences, good and bad, and the result is this fun chat with an actual cornboy. Kingcast favorite Kate Siegel (Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass) returns to the show to discuss her latest genre appearance as the special guest star for the Season 3 premiere episode of The Creep Tapes, debuting next Tuesday, September 15th on Shudder/AMC+.  We talk about the sexual politics of that episode, her working relationship with star Mark Duplass, and how she prepared for one specific tender, yet powerful moment in the episode before we moved on to talk about her Stephen King fandom, her experiences directing an episode of the upcoming Carrie, and, of course, the topic at hand: The Talisman universe. With Other Worlds Than These (aka The Talisman 3) coming out next month it's about time we discuss a little bit about what King and his co-author, Peter Straub, set out to do with not just The Talisman, but their divisive sequel: Black House. Vespe and Kate have different opinions on the sequel, but that just leads to a more riveting discussion at what's at the heart of this particular series from King.

If you're a weirdo like us here at The Kingcast then you'll hold Casper Kelly's work up as an ideal beacon of the bizarre. From Too Many Cooks to his Cheddar Goblin commercial in Mandy, Kelly's been bouncing between pitch perfect nostalgia and crap-your-pants creepiness his whole career.  He finally got to make a feature film called Buddy, which is essentially what if Barney was really a hellish purgatory for the characters trapped inside the tube. Yes, it's as sweet as it sounds. Bloody, profane, and fun as all hell.  Kelly joins The Kingcast boys to talk about this film and to talk about the strange Stephen King influences that can be found therein. The Shining, Misery, and On Writing all had at least a backwards impact on how this crazy flick came together. This past weekend we lost genre great Chuck Russell, who directed the best Nightmare On Elm Street sequel, one of the best horror remakes (The Blob), and introduced the world to Cameron Diaz in The Mask. Last year we had the great pleasure of interviewing him on this show, so in honor of the man and his legacy we're rerunning that chat this week. Most of the conversation revolves around his remake of schlockfest Witchboard and his early career collaboration with one Mr. Frank Darabont. One of the most common questions we receive here at The Kingcast is where to start. It's not an easy question to answer, especially given the mountain of work the author has put out and continues to add on to year by year. So Vespe and Breznican brought in acclaimed genre author Nat Cassidy (When The Wolf Comes Home, Nestlings, I Know A Place) to talk through different titles and determine what we think the best Starter King is. Is it a Short Story? Is it a famous book? How challenging is too challenging? And would we recommend the same Starter King to an adult as we would the parent of a tween curious about reading Stephen King?

How many Corn Children could Stephen Graham Jones take out before they overwhelm him? Is there's a good movie that could be made out of this admittedly pulpy source material? Screenwriter Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight, The Exorcist, Mortal Kombat II) returns to The Kingcast to talk about... not Stephen King. Well, not directly, anyway. The topic up for discussion is Joe Hill's 2025 epic horror tome King Sorrow which contains many familial references and those don't just include his famous father.  The story centers a group of college friends who uncover the ability to summon a dark force to combat their enemies, but like most dark forces this protection comes at a price.Hill tells this story over multiple decades and litters the narrative with nods to many King titles, from The Dead Zone to The Dark Tower. We discuss the book without spoilers for the first half of the conversation and dig into some of the more spoilery stuff in the back. Don't worry, make it very clear when we're transitioning to spoiler territory. Make sure to catch Mortal Kombat II written by our guest Jeremy Slater in theaters this weekend!

The very funny Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney had never seen David Cronenberg's The Dead Zone, so naturally we had to make them watch it and report back. You know Nick & Brian collectively as BriTANiK from their sketch work at SNL, their writing on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and the two movies they have coming out this April: Pizza Movie, which they wrote and directed and is out now on Hulu, and Over Your Dead Body, hitting theaters this very weekend.  So, what did they think of Cronenberg's film? Well, you'll have to listen and find out, but I will say that had just as many questions for Vespe and Breznican as the hosts had for them.
