Description

HI, I am Lisanne Iriks and I am deeply passionate about people having the ability to resolve conflict powerfully and negotiate effectively in their lives.   I am so passionate about it because I see how much suffering it is causing people on a daily basis and I know that it  just does not have to be this way.  When people truly get how conflict impacts their life and put the work in to get effective at conflict resolution and negotiation,  they get to experience deep connections with other people, freedom, self-expression, love, and happiness! So what is it that I do? I am a conflict resolution specialist and have been a mediator and facilitator for over 12 years specialising in family mediation and workplace mediation.   I have taken thousands for people through the mediation process and I have had the honour to be a finalist for the  Australian Mediator of the year award for the last two years. I train, coach, and mentor people to become highly effective in conflict resolution and negotiation so they can create the relationships they want in their homes and their boardrooms.  I am so excited to welcome you to CONVERSATIONS TO CUT THE CONFLICT! This podcast is designed to create actual change in people’s lives and the world.  I am committed to bringing you the conversations, insight, and tools you need for you to switch on your inner conflict resolution and negotiation muscles and get you to a completely different level where you can resolve conflict powerfully and create the relationships you want in your life. Think about it...what would life be like if you would not be afraid of dealing with conflict and you would deal with it easily and quickly. It would change the game dramatically, wouldn't it?   Thank you for being here and being willing to have these conversations and switch on your inner conflict resolution muscle. The world needs people like you!  It would mean so much to me if you could share an episode with the people in your life. I put so much into these conversations and I would like these conversations to reach as many people as possible! Please tag me on Instagram when you share an episode so I can reshare your story.  It is so great to meet you, now let's get into these conversations…

Ep 50 - Modern Co-Parenting in the Age of Smartphones & Social Media
2025/03/09
Co-parenting was never easy, but throw in constant notifications, texting wars, and social media exposure, and it can feel impossible. How do you set boundaries when your ex has 24/7 access to you? What happens when texts spiral into arguments that last all night? Should your kids have unrestricted phone access between homes? In this episode, I dive into the pros and cons of modern communication in co-parenting—when technology helps, when it makes things worse, and how to set boundaries that actually reduce conflict. I also talk about: ✔ The anxiety of constant messages from your ex and how to manage it. ✔ Why social media can be a co-parenting battlefield (and how to avoid it). ✔ Setting tech boundaries with your kids—because Fortnite and TikTok are parenting challenges we never saw coming.
Ep 49 - How Menopause Impacts Women's Lives and Their Relationships
2025/01/20
Did you know that menopause can have a profound impact on how we act, think, and handle conflict?  Hormones have a huge impact on our mood, our relationships and how we deal with difficult situations. As women we often think that it's not just “part of life” to feel irritable or low before your period or to suffer through menopause symptoms. ( I know I thought this).  But I am finding out that it doesn’t have to be this way. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Louise Newson, a renowned menopause specialist, to discuss the truth about hormones and their impact on women’s lives.  We talk about everything from mood swings and irrational behaviour to the life-changing benefits of proper hormone treatment. Key takeaways:  Hormones affect more than physical health—they influence mood, cognition, and emotional well-being. Only 14% of Australian women use hormone replacement therapy, often due to misinformation or lack of education. It’s time to stop normalising unnecessary suffering and start addressing the root causes and in the process save relationships.Partners: Help the women in your life get the care they need—it can make all the difference.Dr. Newson shares her expertise and resources like the Balance app, helping women take charge of their hormonal health. Ep 48 - Understanding and Addressing Domestic Abuse in Australia
2024/07/23
In this episode I interview Annabelle Daniel OAM, Founding CEO of Women’s Community Shelters, to delve into the critical issues of domestic violence and women’s homelessness. Annabelle shares her extensive experience working with local communities in New South Wales to establish crisis shelters, transitional housing, and homes for older women experiencing homelessness.  We discuss the complexities of domestic violence, the challenges faced by women navigating conflicting advice from various organizations, and the ongoing efforts to create more shelters and preventative programs. Annabelle has a world of knowledge and I got a lot out of this conversation and I hope many others will do too. Resources that Annabelle mentioned for practitioners and anyone that is listening are listed below: 1. NSW Police Risk Assessment Tool https://sydneynorthhealthnetwork.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/Domestic-Violence-Safety-Assessme... 2. A very good, evidence-based risk assessment tool. Victoria uses a similar one called MARAM. 3. Why Men Choose to Use Abuse: An insightful article discussing the benefits perceived by abusive men. https://voicemalemagazine.org/abusive-men-describe-the-benefits-of-violence/ 4. One of the best books on this subject is Lundy Bancroft’s ‘Why Does He Do That? Inside the Minds of Angry and Controlling Men’. Lundy worked in Men’s Behaviour Change programs for decades and provides some absolutely fantastic insights into the nature of abusive men, and the genesis of behaviours. Here is the link for interested:. https://www.amazon.com.au/Why-Does-He-That-Controlling/dp/0425191656 Please share this episode far and wide as we need to educate as many people as we can.
Ep 47 - The Lawyer That Tells You Not To Go To Court and Why
2024/06/09
I loved recording this episode with Ella Hickman from Hickman Family Lawyers.  Ella is not only a great human being but also a great lawyer.  She practices almost exclusively in family law, dealing with both parenting and property issues. Ella is a firm believer in mediation, and resolving matters sensibly and commercially without the need for lengthy, expensive, and stressful court proceedings. She is absolutely committed to getting clients the best outcomes, with her focus being on reaching practical outcomes, and reducing stress and financial cost so people can move on with their lives as easily as possible. We talk about why people should not go to the Family Court, what you can do to prevent going to the family court and how you can get out of the system when you have entered into it. This is a great episode for anyone who is a separated parent in conflict and it is also a great episode for any professional that is working with separated parents in conflict but is not a lawyer. I enjoyed recording this conversation.  It is full of brilliant information.  Have a listen and let me know your thoughts!
Ep 46 - How to Better Engage Fathers in the Family Mediation Process
2024/03/31
I have had the pleasure of interviewing Nurit Zubery in this episode of Conversations To Cut The Conflict.  I sat in Nurit's presentation at the Mediation Conference in New Zealand last year and I asked her to come on the podcast as this is not a topic that gets talked about a lot. Women deal with challenges in the family court system, in mediation and men do as well. In this episode we explore the research of Nurit who researched the experience dads have in the mediation and family court system. Listen to this episode to get tips on how as professionals we can improve dad's experiences of the system and mediation, which leads to them engaging more in mediation. I enjoyed the conversation. It is always great to reflect on our practice as professionals to see what we can do better and see situations from a different perspective. You can read the full article that Nurit mentions in the interview here: https://bit.ly/3TKbhqj For more information about Nurit and her works, visit her website: www.beyondconflict.co.nz

Ep 40 - Navigating High-Conflict Family Separation
2023/04/03
I loved having a conversation with Faiza Gabriel, director of Lighthouse Legal.  Having observed her parents go through a messy divorce as a teenager, Faiza knew early on that there had to be a better way, and that her calling was to guide people in that direction.  Since being admitted as a solicitor and barrister in 2008, she has worked predominantly in family law. Over the years she has gained extensive experience in family law matters, including advising and representing clients in complex financial settlements and arrangements for children at the Family Court.  In 2020, she established her own practice, Lighthouse Legal, and remains committed to helping her clients find safe passage through the storm after a separation. We are both passionate about helping people through their family conflict and keeping people out of the family court. And if they have to go through court to support them in how to do it in the least damaging way. What is special about this episode is that Faiza shares openly what it was like to be the child of parents who had a high conflict divorce as a child but also as an adult now as they still do not get along.  It is so powerful to hear from an adult who has lived through a high conflict divorce what it is like and what parents can do to make it easier for their children when they go through a divorce. We also talk about what an ICL is (independent children's lawyer) and what they do. There are lots of myths out there and this episode will give you insight on what the role of an ICL is and how the process works. This episode is great for anyone who is separating, or in conflict with their ex-partner but also for practitioners, lawyers and mediators as we need to keep reminding ourselves of why we do what we do and how we can make a difference to families in the best way possible.
Ep 39 - Overcome your Inner Conflict and Show Up with Confidence on Camera
2022/11/28
This episode is for business owners who do not feel confident to show up on all the platforms commonly used  nowadays to generate business. Or if you are someone that feels that you do not need to show up on all the different platforms, then this episode is for you too. I interview Carmen Braidwood and she is absolutely amazing. She has years of experience showing up on TV and Radio and is now transferring these skills to the business world. Carmen is giving so many tips and tricks in this episode on how to show up on camera and have the ability to speak your truth and spread your message. To be able to do that, we all have to deal with our inner conflict AKA the voice in our head that tells us that we are not good enough and the worry of what others might think. Enjoy!
Ep 38 - Emotions in Conflict- Debunking Myths and How to Work With It
2022/11/14
Emotions are necessary and useful to have in our everyday life. We cannot survive without them. While emotions are so important, most people do not find it easy to talk about them, recognise them and work with (please note I said with, not against) them. A lot of people find this especially difficult when they find themselves in a conflict situation. In this episode I am debunking myths that surround emotions with Dr Sam Hardy based on her research. This new research is available to us but as a society we are still working with old myths that are not useful! I feel so lucky that Sam shared her wisdom and research with all you listeners in this episode. I feel everyone should listen to this episode! Sam's research will change what you think you know about emotions. I promise. I got a lot out of this conversation and I am sure you will too. What we discuss will apply to you on a personal level but also if you are a professional working in the conflict resolution space. Books Sam referred to during the  podcast: 1. Lisa Feldman Barrett “How Emotions are Made” 2. Susan David “Emotional Agility” 3. Batja Mesquita “Between Us: How cultures create emotions” Also, information about Sam's Working with Emotions in Conflict Course can be found here: https://www.cciacademy.com/wwe-online/  Use the coupon code BETA at checkout to avail 20% discount on the normal registration fee.
Ep 37 - Legacy, Death and Conflict
2022/10/31
In this episode, I interview  Zinta Harris from Resolve Estate Law. Zinta is a succession lawyer, collaborative professional, and mediator who is amazing at helping people when they are in conflict while a loved one has just passed away. I loved having this conversation with Zinta. We discuss death and other topics most people do not like talking about but should be talking about. Zinta has a great approach and during our conversation I found myself looking differently at death and what legacy I would like to leave behind. I highly recommend that you listen to this episode. If you want to know how can you protect your legacy (which is not just about money by the way). What kind of things do you need to talk about with the people that you love before you are no longer here, and how can you resolve disputes surrounding wills and estates and while you are grieving. You can purchase Zinta's book called "Rest In Peace" in the link below: https://resolveestatelaw.com.au/rest-in-peace/
Ep 36 - How can you negotiate effectively within the workplace and avoid conflict.
2022/10/10
This episode is for anyone who is interested in preventing conflict in the workplace and creating an environment where people enjoy working and want to stay. I interviewed Jo Alilovic who is an HR lawyer that works with businesses to get things right from the beginning. She helps businesses with strategic planning, and preventative measures to avoid the legal claims that may arise when a working relationship breaks down. Jo and I talk about what bullying is and what it is not and how you can prevent conflict in the workplace. The work environment has changed a lot over the last years which has forced employees and employers to negotiate more than ever. The question is how do you do this best? Have a listen and please share this with anyone who you think can benefit from this. Do not forget to leave a review if you loved this episode. Thank you!
