The best stories are the ones that take you on an unforgettable ride. You go tumbling through places you have never been before, taking turns between belief and disbelief, pausing only to admire the leaps of the writer’s imagination and coming out at the end chuckling with delight. This is one such story by Nizam Shah. I haven’t been able to find much about this writer. Google doesn’t reveal much as his is a common name (much like Arti). I gather from the text that he was writing in pre-independence India. Some storytellers are for every season. O’Henry is one such. We grew up on his stories in English but also some of us will recall the wonderful televised adaptations of world’s best stories in the series, ‘Katha Sagar’. Made in 1986, the series featured a collection of stories by writers like Katherine Mansfield, Guy de Maupassant, Leo Tolstoy, O' Henry, and Anton Chekhov. Abid Surti is an Indian painter, author, cartoonist, journalist, environmentalist, playwright and screenwriter. A diploma holder from J. J. School of Art in 1954, Surti has written short stories, novels, plays, children's books and travelogues. Several of his books have been translated into regional languages. Ashok Pande writes in many voices. He writes travelogues and poetry, he has written a book about forgotten women of the world and a lot about his corner of Uttarakhand. His Facebook page is a treasure trove of stories big and small, told with a mix of humour, compassion and curiosity, all in equal parts. Where I pause most in his work is his book of “kissas” (anecdotes). For someone like me who “hears” the words as I read, intonation and all (I recently discovered that it’s a scientifically proven thing, this hearing of words in one’s head in an actual voice!) Premchand wrote boldly and fearlessly about his times. He wrote of abject poverty and desperation, he wrote against feudalism and for betterment of women. He spoke of the evils that plagued society in his times…and those evils sadly still continue to haunt us to this day.  But there was this other side to Premchand that I find fascinating. That was his sparkling wit and humour. He saw all the ugliness in the world for what it was and yet he managed to smile…even laugh…his laugh was famously raucous and free spirited. I have read his deeply emotional, unflinchingly empathetic stories and they are moving like none other but I have to confess I most enjoy reading of his everyday life, which he documents with humour and lightheartedness that’s like coming up for air. 

It is in times of great strife that the people around us reveal themselves. The fair weather friends leave, making more room for those who ask no questions or put down conditions before offering support. Vishnu Khare  was a poet, translator, literary and film critic, journalist and scriptwriter. He was a polyglot, proficient in several languages, including Hindi, English, German, and other European and Asian languages. He wrote and translated extensively in both Hindi and English, and his translations included works from German, Finnish, Estonian, and other languages. He also translated modern Hindi poetry into English and GermanKhare was a recipient of many awards and honours, including an Order of the White Rose of Finland for his Hindi translation of the national epic of Finland, Kalevala. One of the sharpest minds of her times, she spread her wings wide in the literary skies- she wrote for newspapers, short stories, memoirs and that magnificent historical novel, Aag Ka Dariya ( that she later translated into English herself as River of Fire)- a novel that encompasses the fates of four recurring characters over two and a half millennia.  Let’s listen today to a story that well illustrates her sparkling skills as a storyteller par excellence! कुर्रतुलैन हैदर एक ऐसी कहानीकार थीं जिनके कथानक  गति में तेज़ और फिर भी अपने मूड में स्थिर होते हैं। उनके पात्र, जो अक्सर शहरी पृष्ठभूमि से होते हैं, विडंबनाओं से भरे जीवन जीते हैं, कुर्रतुलैन हैदर उन पात्रों की कहानी अपनी अनूठी व्यंग्यात्मक शैली के साथ बयान करती हैं। अपने समय की सबसे प्रखर लेखकों में से एक, उन्होंने साहित्य के आसमान में अपने पंख फैलाए- उन्होंने अखबारों, लघु कथाओं, संस्मरणों के साथ-साथ उन्होंने वह  शानदार ऐतिहासिक उपन्यास, आग का दरिया लिखा, जिसका बाद में उन्होंने खुद अंग्रेजी में ‘रिवर ऑफ फायर’ के रूप में अनुवाद किया। ये एक ऐसा उपन्यास है जो ढाई सहस्राब्दियों में चार आवर्ती पात्रों के भाग्य को समेटे हुए है।  आइए आज एक ऐसी कहानी सुनें जो एक कहानीकार के रूप में उनके शानदार कौशल को बखूबी दर्शाती है! ऐनी आपा के नाम से जानी जानी वाली क़ुर्रतुल ऐन हैदर  प्रसिद्ध उपन्यासकार और लेखिका थीं। उनका जन्म उत्तर प्रदेश के शहर अलीगढ़ में हुआ था। उनके पिता थे 'सज्जाद हैदर यलदरम' जो उर्दू के जाने-माने लेखक तो थे ही, साथ ही ब्रिटिश शासन के राजदूत की हैसियत से अफगानिस्तान, तुर्की इत्यादि देशों में भी रहे  और उनकी मां 'नजर' बिन्ते-बाकिर भी उर्दू की लेखिका थीं। कुर्रतुलऐन बचपन से ही पाश्चात्य संस्कृति में पली-बढ़ीं। उन्होंने प्रारंभिक शिक्षा लालबाग, लखनऊ, उत्तर प्रदेश स्थित गाँधी स्कूल में प्राप्त की व तत्पश्चात अलीगढ़ से हाईस्कूल पास किया।उन्होंने लखनऊ विश्वविद्यालय से एम.ए. किया। फिर लन्दन के हीदरलेस आर्ट्स स्कूल में शिक्षा ग्रहण की। भारत और पाकिस्तान के विभाजन के समय  में उनके भाई-बहन व रिश्तेदार पाकिस्तान पलायन कर गए। लखनऊ में अपने पिता की मौत के बाद कुर्रतुल ऐन हैदर भी अपने बड़े भाई मुस्तफा हैदर के साथ पाकिस्तान पलायन कर गयीं। लेकिन वहां से वे लन्दन चली गयीं। वहाँ स्वतंत्र लेखक व पत्रकार के रूप में वह बीबीसी लन्दन से जुड़ीं तथा दि टेलीग्राफ की रिपोर्टर व इम्प्रिंट पत्रिका की प्रबन्ध सम्पादक भी रहीं। कुर्रतुल ऐन हैदर इलेस्ट्रेड वीकली के संपादन से भी जुडी रही । १९५६ में जब वे भारत भ्रमण पर आईं तो उनके पिताजी के अभिन्न मित्र मौलाना अबुल कलाम आज़ाद ने उनसे पूछा कि क्या वे भारत आना चाहतीं हैं? कुर्रतुल ऐन हैदर के हामी भरने पर उन्होंने इस दिशा में कोशिश करने की बात कही और अन्ततः वे वह लन्दन से आकर मुम्बई में रहने लगीं और तब से भारत में हीं रहीं। उन्होंने विवाह नहीं किया। उन्होंने अपना कैरियर एक पत्रकार की हैसियत से शुरू किया लेकिन इसी दौरान वे लिखती भी रहीं और उनकी कहानियां, उपन्यास, अनुवाद, रिपोर्ताज़ वग़ैरह सामने आते रहे। वो उर्दू में लिखती और अँग्रेजी में पत्रकारिता करती थीं। उनके बहुत से उपन्यासों का अनुवाद अंग्रेज़ी और हिंदी भाषा में हो चुका है। साहित्य अकादमी में उर्दू सलाहकार बोर्ड की वे दो बार सदस्य भी रहीं। विजिटिंग प्रोफेसर के रूप में वे जामिया इस्लामिया विश्वविद्यालय व अलीगढ मुस्लिम विश्वविद्यालय और अतिथि प्रोफेसर के रूप में कैलिफोर्निया विश्वविद्यालय से भी जुड़ी रहीं।१९५९ में उनका सबसे प्रसिद्ध उपन्यास आग का दरिया प्रकाशित हुआ जिसे आज़ादी के बाद लिखा जाने वाला सबसे बड़ा उपन्यास माना गया। -----About this channel: On this Youtube channel, you can listen to Hindi and Urdu Stories by famous writers of Hindi sahitya/ literature. An important name among the post Premchand novelists, Jainendra Kumar was known for his psychoanalytic writing. He had the ability to discover hidden meanings and subtle signals in everyday conversations. He wove his observations skillfully into his characters’ lives in a way that their psychological and philosophical state of mind took precedence over the plot of the story.  प्रेमचंद के बाद के उपन्यासकारों में एक महत्वपूर्ण नाम जैनेंद्र कुमार का है। उनको उनके मनोविश्लेषणात्मक लेखन के लिए जाना जाता है। उनमें रोज़मर्रा की बातचीत में छिपे अर्थ और सूक्ष्म संकेतों को खोजने की क्षमता थी। उन्होंने अपने अवलोकनों को अपने पात्रों के जीवन में इस तरह से पिरोया कि उनकी मनोवैज्ञानिक और दार्शनिक मनःस्थिति कहानी के कथानक से ज़्यादा महत्वपूर्ण हो जाती है और पढ़ने वाले को आत्मचिंतन की ओर ले जाती है।

Mirza Hadi Ruswa recounts in the preface of his novel, Umrao Jaan Ada, how he came to write the story of a courtesan from Lucknow.  His friend Munshi Ahmad Hussain had rented a floor in a chowk in Lucknow and this is where he organised mushairas for his friends. Next to his house lives a most mysterious woman who is never seen, but sometimes late at night she can be heard singing. Once at a mushaira hosted by Munshi, Ruswa recites a couplet and a soft voice from next door exclaims, “wah! Wah!”. The mysterious lady invites Ruswa to her home and turns out to be Umrao Jaan Ada who Ruswa had known many years ago. She then proceeds to narrate her story to Ruswa, which then became the famous novel, Umrao Jaan Ada.  मिर्ज़ा हादी रुसवा अपने उपन्यास उमराव जान अदा की प्रस्तावना में बताते हैं कि कैसे उन्होंने लखनऊ की एक तवायफ़ की कहानी लिखी। उनके दोस्त मुंशी अहमद हुसैन ने लखनऊ के एक चौक में एक घर किराये पर लिया था। यहाँ वो अपने दोस्तों के लिए मुशायरे आयोजित करते थे। उनके घर के बगल में एक बहुत ही रहस्यमयी महिला रहती है जो कभी दिखाई नहीं देती, लेकिन कभी-कभी देर रात को उसे गाते हुए सुना जा सकता है। एक बार मुंशी द्वारा आयोजित एक मुशायरे में रुसवा एक शेर पढ़ते हैं और बगल के दरवाजे से एक धीमी आवाज़ में आवाज़ आती है, "वाह! वाह!"। रहस्यमयी महिला रुसवा को अपने घर बुलाती है और पता चलता है की वह उमराव जान अदा है जिसे रुसवा कई सालों पहले मिले थे। उमराव जान अपनी कहानी रुसवा को अपनी कहानी सुनाती है। कहानी बन जाती है उर्दू का पहला उपन्यास- उमराव जान अदा।
