Welcome back to 321 Lift Off. Join us as we speak with Dr. Anastacia Hawkins-Smith, Chief Executive Officer & Artistic Director of the Historic Cocoa Village Playhouse. Established as the Aladdin Theater, the doors opened to the public on August 18, 1924, showing silent movies. Later, Brevard’s first “talkie” movie house became known as “the showplace of the Indian River Section.” Several owners and several decades later, the auditorium was acquired by the City of Cocoa, changing the name to The Cocoa Village Playhouse. The Brevard County Community College District Board of Trustees purchased the playhouse in 1984 for $1 from the city. In 1991, the auditorium was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in Tallahassee. In the Spring of 2011, Brevard Community College returned ownership of the Cocoa Village Playhouse to the City of Cocoa, who started a million-dollar renovation on the building in 2012. Today, the City of Cocoa still owns the playhouse, and it is considered one of the most beautiful theatres in Florida. We will be on stage at the Cocoa Village Playhouse, discussing the rich history of the auditorium, the Stars of Tomorrow youth program, and the various shows, past and present, put on at the playhouse.

We are at Fishlips in beautiful Port Canaveral, discussing the adrenaline these powerboats bring to Cocoa Beach, the competitive edge needed for speed boat racing, and this year's schedule of events featuring more world-class race teams than ever before!

Visitors can discover the beauty of nature in more than 250 square miles of wildlife refuge, Brevard Zoo, and the Indian River Lagoon. Launches are visible across the county from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, the only location in America where astronauts launch into space. We will be speaking with our guests, Peter Cranis and Charity Stewart with the Space Coast Office of Tourism, who will be giving us updates on new attractions, new hotels, and special events along Florida’s Space Coast.

Welcome back to 321 Lift Off! Today we are at the Lawndale Museum (The Hiram Smith Williams Home) in Rockledge. Lawndale is a historic home in Rockledge, Florida, built by Hiram Smith Williams, a carriage builder by trade. Williams came to Florida from Alabama to find new prospects during the economic turmoil of the Reconstruction period following the Civil War. He began working to promote and lead the community, became the first postmaster for Rockledge, served as County Treasurer, served as a State Senator in the mid-1880s, and established the Brevard Telephone Company later in life. We will be on location at the museum speaking with the docents (guides), exploring the history of the historic home and the Williams family who created it.
