S2 E10 Celebrating your own wins
2026/10/19
In this episode, we talk about the trap of comparing your real life to everyone else's highlight reel. It’s easy to feel behind when you’re measuring your everyday journey against someone’s curated, polished moments online.
Join us as we explore why comparing yourself to others steals your joy, how to shift your perspective back to your own path, and why celebrating your smallest victories—no matter how minor they seem—is key to building genuine confidence and long-term fulfillment.
The Curated Story Illusion: Why social media feeds and external success stories rarely tell the whole truth—and how to stop using them as your benchmark.
Focusing on Your Own Lane: Practical strategies to keep your eyes on your personal growth without measuring your pace against someone else's timeline.
The Power of Small Wins: Why micro-victories matter, and how celebrating small daily progress rewires your mindset for consistency and positivity.
Actionable Steps to Break Comparison Habits: Simple daily habits to protect your mental energy and stay grounded in your own achievements.
S2 E9. When You're Young, You Think You're Immortal: Health, Aging, and the Habits We Take for Granted
2026/10/18
Episode Title: When You're Young, You Think You're Immortal
Episode Description:
When we're young, we think we can do anything. We stay awake for days, survive on coffee, eat whatever we want, and barely think about the consequences. We believe our bodies can take anything—as though we're going to live forever.
But growing older changes that perspective.
In this episode, I reflect on my younger years, when sleepless nights, endless cups of coffee, and unhealthy habits were simply part of everyday life. Now, as I approach another stage of life, I've come to realize that health is perhaps one of the most important investments we can ever make.
I also revisit a time when children spent hours outdoors—running, walking, playing, and interacting face-to-face—long before smartphones, social media, and mobile games became part of our daily lives.
Have we gained technological convenience at the expense of physical activity and human interaction? And what can today's younger generation learn from the experiences of those who came before them?
Inspired by Saint John Bosco's words, "Shout, run, jump, play, sing, but don't sin," this episode is a personal reflection on aging, healthy habits, physical activity, and the importance of taking care of ourselves before life forces us to.
Because the best time to invest in your health isn't when you become old. It's while you're still young.
SIR, ONE LAST QUESTION!
2026/10/17
“Sir, one last question.” But is it ever really the last?
In this episode of Dear Gwyneth, Doc George vents about a familiar teaching experience: research questions arriving one message at a time—even when students have browsers, online resources, and AI at their fingertips.
Gwyneth offers another perspective: perhaps students keep asking because they trust his judgment. What begins as a dad’s complaint becomes a warm, humorous conversation about independent learning, respect for expertise, and the boundaries between being a statistician and becoming an unofficial research adviser.
They also touch on research linking social connection with longevity—giving Gwyneth one more reason to tell Dad to appreciate the conversation.
For teachers, students, research advisers, and anyone who has ever received a message beginning with “One question na lang po.”
Fresh Grad, Now What? A Dad and Daughter on Life After Graduation | Dear Gwyneth
2026/10/16
You’ve graduated. Now comes the question everyone keeps asking: “So, what’s next?”
In this episode of Dear Gwyneth, Doc George and his daughter Gwyneth explore the pressure to have life figured out after graduation. From comparing yourself with others online to worrying about your first job, they discuss why starting can feel overwhelming—and whether you really need to be an expert before taking that first step.
Drawing on his journey from mathematics to banking, teaching, consulting, and publishing, Doc George offers a perspective that Gwyneth challenges with the realities facing her generation.
Together, they ask: How do you prepare for the future without feeling that you are already falling behind?
A warm, candid father–daughter conversation about expectations, career detours, learning through experience, and finding your own pace.
For fresh graduates, young professionals, and parents learning how to support them.
Stop Wishing, Start Planning: The 6 Steps to Any Financial Goal | Personal Finance for Real Life
2026/07/19
"I want to save more money" has never worked for anyone. It has no number, no deadline, and nothing to check yourself against — which is exactly why it never survives a busy week.
In Episode 2, we break down the 6-step financial planning process — the same loop professionals use — and the SMART framework that turns a vague money wish into a goal you can actually hit. You'll hear real before-and-after examples, learn which investment vehicle actually fits your timeline, and walk away with the four most common goal-setting mistakes to avoid.
By the end, you'll have one real, fully SMART financial goal — not just a feeling about money.
This episode builds directly on Episode 1's compounding math — if you haven't listened yet, start there.
Business and Marketing Research Episode 2: "What Marketing Research Actually Is (And Isn't)"
2026/07/18
"We already kind of know the answer" is one of the most dangerous assumptions in business — and one of the most common mistakes new researchers make. In this episode, Professor Cherry and Dr. George lay out what marketing research and business research actually mean, how they differ, and why intuition alone is too risky a foundation for real decisions. Using the running example of a long-standing local business trying to figure out whether it's actually losing its younger customers — or just assuming it is — they walk through the research cycle from problem to insight to decision, and flag the shortcuts students take that quietly undermine an entire study before it begins.
Opportunity Seeking Ep. 2: Why Some People Spot Opportunities (and Most People Walk Past Them)
2026/07/18
Two founders looked at the same crowded Philippine phone market in 2009 that everyone else saw — and noticed something different. In this episode, we unpack the entrepreneurial mindset, Israel Kirzner's theory of alertness, and how Cherry Mobile turned an overlooked affordability gap into one of the country's top-selling phone brands.
This episode covers:
• The six core traits of opportunity-alert entrepreneurs — curiosity, prior knowledge, pattern recognition, networked access, risk tolerance, and cognitive flexibility
• Israel Kirzner's theory of entrepreneurial alertness — why noticing matters more than deliberate searching
• Real case: how Cherry Mobile spotted an affordability gap in the Philippine smartphone market and built a top-selling brand around it
• The four ways alertness shows up: deliberate search, serendipity, systematic scanning, and networked discovery
Reflection question for this episode: Think about the last time you noticed something "off" or inefficient — a line, a price, a missing option. Which trait did you use to notice it?
Personal Finance for Real Life Episode 1
2026/07/15
Only 3% of Filipinos who invest actually own stocks, bonds, mutual funds, or UITFs. Everyone else? They think SSS and Pag-IBIG is their whole portfolio.
In this first episode, we break down what wealth management actually means, why most people confuse "having a bank account" with "being an investor," and the one habit — proven with real numbers — that separates people who build wealth from people who just... save.
You'll walk away knowing exactly one thing to do this week to start closing the gap.
Data referenced in this episode comes from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas' Financial Inclusion and Consumer Finance surveys.
Marketing and Business Research episode 1
2026/07/15
Description:
Every research paper starts with a problem — but what changes when the "problem" belongs to a real, living business instead of a hypothetical case? In this opening episode, Dr. George and Professor Che unpack what it means to do research for a company rather than about one: the added responsibility, the higher stakes, and the shift from chasing a grade to earning a client's trust. Using a real (unnamed) local heritage business as the running example throughout the series — a decades-old, family-run establishment now facing new competition and an uncertain hold on younger customers — this episode sets the tone for everything that follows: research that has to be rigorous and useful.
Opportunity Seeking Ep. 1: What Is Opportunity Seeking?
2026/07/15
What do Jollibee, GCash, and Human Nature have in common? They all started the same way: someone noticed a real, unmet need. In this episode, we break down what "opportunity seeking" actually means, why it's different from just having an idea, and preview the 4-step framework — Scan, Discover, Screen, Validate — you'll use to find and validate your own business opportunities.
This episode covers:
• The real difference between an "idea" and a validated "opportunity"
• Three Philippine ventures that started as noticed, validated gaps — Jollibee, GCash/Mynt, and Human Nature
• A first look at the 4-step Opportunity Seeking framework you'll build throughout this series
Reflection question for this episode: Think of one everyday frustration you or your family deals with — is it an opportunity? Why or why not?
