Psalm 37 provides a Discovery of our nature: it is natural to boil over with anger when we see wrong. However, the psalmist tells us to not let ourselves get this way. This starts with five things we must do in Dependence on God: trust in Him, commit/roll away our burden onto Him, Delight in Him, and cease from anger. This takes the Discipline of being still or silent once we have done all this, but once we have, God promises Deliverance. Following the path of faith is not easy.  The life from faith to faith must be in God's direction.  Sometimes God will test us to see if we will lean on him. In seeking the truth that is revealed in Jesus Christ, God creates famine to give us opportunities of faith and opportunities of failure. Just like Abram, we often choose to leave the place that God has called us to because we focus on the seen circumstance of famine rather than trusting God and relying upon His word of promise. Instead of chastising us for getting off track, God uses our mistakes and missteps to lead us back to where we started: the place of sacrifice. Paul prayed for God to take away the "thorn in the flesh" that was troubling him, a messenger of satan, yet God allowed the buffeting as a means of checking his pride.  God knows what we are capable of, and He has a reason for allowing pain to afflict our flesh.  God's promise is abundant grace to deal with the problem of pain and His strength when we run out of our own. When we're walking around saying, why is this happening? Why do the wicked prosper and those who love the Lord suffer so much? Psalm 37 reminds us how to make it through the tough times. Our suffering doesn't go unnoticed. God sees, He knows, and He upholds those who love Him. Fourteen years of ministry and the wisdom of David in his old age show us that God takes care of His own. Faith is an action, distinct from mere mental belief. It is a walk, and God abundantly provides the gifts, the anointing, the call and the equipment sufficient enough to make it through. His arms are there beyond the vanishing point, ready to catch us when we fall. This dire time requires action. Our purpose, calling and tools are there at our fingertips. When faith is turned loose, it does become a victory in Jesus' name. On your 11th anniversary, a message to teach, remind and find out if we are any closer to the recognition that God's in control. We may be feeling like our lives are out of control, but as long as we keep our eyes focused on God The Potter, He will use the pressures of life, including the hard falls, to re-make us in the image and likeness of Christ. Since we are buried, dead and resurrected with Christ and set free from the law by Him, why would we stand by and let ourselves get dogmatized and be put under regulations by man? There is a long list of traditions that man has added on to the church, but they are not the word of God. Having a relationship with God is not keeping regulations but trusting Him and talking to Him. What happened at the church in Colossae is still happening in the church today: adding onto the simplicity of the gospel. All of these add-ons seem to be super spiritual, like the worshiping of angels and marvelous visions, but in reality, they're fake, and all they do is distract. Let no one rob you of your reward which comes by simple faith in Jesus Christ, cultivating a personal relationship with Him in the here and now. God's Sabbath was when He rested from all His work on the seventh day of Creation, but the term "sabbath" is first used when God gave the children of Israel a day to rest from their work, which turned into a commemoration of their deliverance from Egypt. The sabbathing of the Christian is not limited to a single day, but is a relationship of trusting Christ every day. Let no man judge you regarding the keeping of the Sabbath and holidays. We have many traditions, even those reflected in our calendar, that come to us out of pagan sun and moon worship. Traditions that have nothing to do with Scripture should not be part of the church. There is also no reason to keep Old Testament Sabbath practices, because we have a new form of Sabbath rest in the finished work of Christ. Most people today view religion as a set of rules and regulations they have to keep, but this is not the message of the New Testament. We are told to let no one judge us in what we do or don't do, as well as not to judge others who are weak in their faith or understanding. The law was given to set people apart for God's purpose, but we have a better covenant now in Jesus Christ. We are not under the curse of the law anymore, so why would anyone want to go back under it? If we're still not sure that Christ did everything and that we are complete in Him, Colossians 2:15 rightly translated shows us that there was nothing left undone. God disarmed our spiritual foes at the cross! That doesn't mean that they're powerless, but rather that all of the attempts to prevent Christ from going to the cross were thwarted. And as Christ was victorious, so are we! VF-2290 Colossians 2:19 Watch, Listen and Learn 24x7 at PastorMelissaScott.com Pastor Melissa Scott teaches from Faith Center in Glendale.
