Behind the Fire - Part 1
2026/10/07
Send us Fan Mail In this episode of #thespaceinbetween, I sit down with author Ken Klonsky to unpack why he turns to memoir as a way to unify an unusual life and test the stories he has carried for decades. We discuss grief, inherited trauma, and the sometimes unreliability of childhood memory, then land on a bigger question: Even in the face of what we inherit; our family trauma, how do we break free of the past and become conscious human beings instead of reactionary ones? Chapter 2 - Death World - San Diego California 1988
2026/10/01
Send us Fan Mail Situated in San Diego, California in 1988, Ken’s mind gets pulled backward by one simple question that never stopped echoing: Where’s Mom?  We trace that question to September 1961, when a high school football concussion leaves a fifteen-year-old foggy and frightened in a dark hospital room. The injury heals, but the emotional wound deepens as answers turn evasive and a mother’s disappearance becomes a kind of unspoken family embarrassment. Later, a father reveals a hidden story about Ken’s birth that creates deep confusion about being wanted, being protected, and what “love” even means inside a stoic household that doesn’t talk about feelings.  Death World also comes with chores that don’t wait for anyone’s readiness: wills, debts, possessions, burial choices, and the bitter arguments around money. A walk through Mission Bay sparks a realization about “proof” through photographs and the lifelong desire for evidence that love was real. That need collides with a late confrontation where Ken asks his mother why she left and hears an answer shaped by women’s limited options, financial control, and survival.  If you’ve ever navigated end-of-life care-giving, family estrangement, or the aftermath of hidden family secrets, this chapter will feel uncomfortably familiar. Subscribe, share this with someone who gets it, and leave a review. Chapter 1: Childhood Memories - The Bronx - 1946-1951
2026/09/24
Send us Fan Mail We return to a Bronx childhood where heat, fear, and secrecy shape memory before language can explain what it means.  In this chapter, we follow Ken Klonsky’s early life on Wallace Avenue in the late 1940s and early 50s, where the street feels like an entire universe and history hangs in the air like weather.  We talk about what it means to grow up around Holocaust survivors and the ongoing aftershocks of the mass atrocity. Ken recounts a disturbing violation he never tells his parents about, then shows how easily a child can step back into “normal” life while the memory lodges inside. We trace the impact of myth and media on children - the way stories teach a child what strength and beauty is supposed to look like.  The chapter widens into family history and family storytelling: grandparents shaped by migration and loss, a home charged with perfectionism and rage, and the truths that surface decades later and change everything. We hear a painful account about the family business that exposes racism hiding behind a polished veneer of respectability, then return to the defining family legend of a childhood fire and rescue, with one question still unanswered, "where were you"?  Subscribe to Out of the Fire, share this chapter with someone who loves memoir storytelling, and leave a review so more listeners can find the show. Out of the Fire - The Prologue
2026/09/17
Send us Fan Mail In this opening episode, Cameron Brown turns the mic around and interviews me, about why For What It’s Worth is launching season seven with a deeply personal narrative: An adaptation of Ken Klonsky’s memoir, Out Of The Fire. Last season we covered healthcare under pressure, AI, policy, democracy, and the hard reality that complex problems don’t come with simple answers. This season. We explore why memoir is the right vehicle for this moment in time and why our identity is a reflection both what of happened to us, and what we choose to do what we could to become as a result. We dig into the uneasy power of memory, how it changes over time, and how the past keeps living inside the present. Season seven is narrated by Ken Klonsky himself, with me acting as a listener’s guide. You’ll hear a prologue that begins with a phone call, a dying mother in San Diego, a family struggling with hospice care, and a question that doesn’t let go: How can we forgive someone when the harm they've caused is real. If you like storytelling podcasts; if you've experienced trauma and resilience as a result of family history and the way memory shapes identity, Out of The Fire will most certainly resonate. Season 7 - Out of the Fire Trailer
2026/09/10
Send us Fan Mail Every life is a story. But some stories refuse to stay in the past. Season 7 of For What It’s Worth takes a different turn — one that is more personal, intimate and reflective. At the centre of the season is Out of the Fire, the memoir of author, educator and wrongful-conviction advocate Ken Klonsky. Told largely in Ken’s own voice, the series explores the memories and experiences that shaped his life — family, friendship, love and loss, justice and injustice, survival, identity, and the choices that make us who we are. Host Blake Melnick joins Ken’s journey as the listener’s guide, exploring not only what happened, but what those experiences mean when viewed through the eyes of the present. Because sometimes, listening to someone else’s story causes us to hear our own a little differently. Season 7 of For What It’s Worth: Out of the Fire. A story about the past, told for the present. Coming soon. For What It’s Worth — ideas for a changing world. This, That, and the Other
2025/11/20
Send us Fan Mail A severed arm on a Florida dock, a 1950s game show built on lies, a Civil War–era courtroom straining under fear, and a band that still sounds alive in the studio - our latest conversation tackles a common theme: what honesty costs and why it still matters. We jump from sun-baked noir vibe of Bad Monkey  to Robert Redford’s Quiz Show and The Conspirator, connecting the dots between satire, image, justice, and the quiet ways power shapes a narrative. Along the way, we dig into Duster’s stylish 70s chase energy and ask how a beloved, well-reviewed series gets cancelled before it finds its audience. On the reading front, we explore The Gift of Not Belonging by Rami Kaminsky and the intriguing idea of the “outrovert”-socially fluid yet resistant to group think. Paired with Henry Winkler’s The Fonz and Beyond, we explore shedding labels, reinventing your creative path, and finding people who see you clearly. Both books turn belonging into a choice, not a box. Then the headphones go on. Little Feat’s Strike Up the Band brings that live-in-the-room swagger - soulful, grooving, and unmistakably human—with Scott Sharrard’s soulful warmth and Tony Leone’s next-level drumming, honouring Richie Hayward’s legacy. We spotlight the grassroots surge of Sons of Legion and revisit Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats for a jolt of gospel-drenched soul that feels like a revival you can dance to. Across screens, pages, and tracks, we keep coming back to one thing: authenticity over image, craft over clout, and stories that ring true. Remembering Rudy
2025/11/14
Send us Fan Mail A plane held together by rope, bamboo,  shouldn’t fly—yet five men bet their lives that it would. We share the true story of RCAF pilot Rudy Mendizabel and a small Allied crew who scavenged two wrecked Lockheeds on a bombed-out Java airfield and built one improbable lifeline. With a cratered runway, engines shaking, and surrender orders closing in, they chose risk over captivity and aimed for the open sea… On Remembrance Day, this story becomes more than an adventure; it’s a lens on sacrifice, resilience, and the ordinary choices that people make in pursuit of freedom. If this story moved you, follow the show, share it with a friend who loves real-life war history and aviation, and leave a review to help others find it. Adressing Canada's Innovation Paradox
2025/11/06
Send us Fan Mail Canada consistently ranks near the bottom of global innovation indexes — despite world-class education, research, and talent. In Addressing Canada’s Innovation Paradox, I explore the reasons why. Drawing on insights from the Conference Board of Canada, Jim Balsillie, and the Council of Canadian Innovators, this episode exposes the roots of our productivity challenge: an outdated Industrial Mindset, indirect funding models, and a failure to own and scale our intellectual property. It is time for a bold shift from an Industrial Mindset to a Knowledge Mindset - one that makes knowledge our primary commodity, not physical products and shows how Canada can become the innovator’s first customer, closing the commercialization gap and keeping innovation value at home. Through real-world examples, research, and reflection, For What It’s Worth re-imagines how Canada can transform from an exporter of ideas to a global leader in innovation. Making it Personal: How AI and Knowledge Management Can Transform Canadian Healthcare
2025/08/19
Send us Fan Mail What if your doctor knew everything about you—not just your medical history, but your genetics, lifestyle, environment, and social circumstances? Abbas Zavar, a physician and digital health leader with over 20 years of experience, believes this comprehensive approach is the key to fixing Canada's broken healthcare system. Our conversation dives deep into the crisis facing Canadian healthcare: overcrowded emergency rooms, months-long wait times, physician shortages, and a system that waits for people to get sick instead of preventing illness. Dr. Zavar challenges this reactive model, proposing a revolutionary shift toward personalized, proactive medicine powered by artificial intelligence and knowledge management. The vision is compelling: imagine AI systems that can gather comprehensive health data across five domains—medical records, genetic information, lifestyle factors, environmental exposures, and social determinants—then transform this information into actionable knowledge for physicians. These systems wouldn't replace doctors but would augment their capabilities, handling administrative burdens that currently consume up to 20 extra hours per week while providing critical insights at the point of care. We explore real-world applications already emerging, like systems that can analyze a patient's genetic profile to determine which medications will be most effective for their unique biology. We also discuss the barriers to implementation, from data silos and interoperability challenges to the slow pace of policy development in the face of rapidly advancing technology. Throughout our discussion,Abbas Zavar emphasizes that the goal isn't to remove humanity from healthcare but to enhance it—freeing physicians from administrative tasks so they can focus on providing compassionate care. As he puts it, "AI won't replace physicians, but physicians who use AI will replace those who don't." Join us for this fascinating glimpse into the future of healthcare, where medicine isn't based on statistics but tailored specifically to you as an individual. Trailer: Making it Personal: AI, Knowledge Management and the Future of Canadian Healthcare
2025/07/30
Send us Fan Mail Canada's healthcare system, once the crown jewel of our national identity, now faces an unprecedented crisis. Emergency rooms overflow with patients waiting hours for care, while millions struggle to find a family doctor. The healthcare professionals we depend on are burning out at alarming rates, caught in a system that seems increasingly unable to meet the complex needs of Canadians. But what if we're looking at the problem all wrong? What if the solution isn't just about more funding, more beds, or more doctors? Abbas Zavar MD, from the University of Toronto's Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation suggests a paradigm shift – one that leverages the power of personalized medicine and artificial intelligence to transform how care is delivered. Through groundbreaking research, Zavar explores how we might collect and consolidate medical data from numerous sources using AI, applying sophisticated knowledge management methodologies to transform data and information into actionable insights. This approach wouldn't just benefit individual patients through more tailored care – it could fundamentally reduce strain on the entire system by improving outcomes, enhancing efficiency, and boosting patient satisfaction. From overcrowded emergency rooms to remote rural healthcare areas, from fragmented provincial systems to the mounting pressures of an aging population, we examine the challenges facing Canadian healthcare and the innovative approaches that could chart a path forward. Whether you're a healthcare professional, policy maker, or simply a concerned Canadian, this conversation offers a compelling vision for how we might preserve the universal, accessible care that defines us as a nation. Subscribe now and join us for "Making it Personal" – an episode that might just change how you think about the future of healthcare in Canada. Making Sense of it All with Anne Applebaum (in absentia)
2025/02/10
Send us Fan Mail What drives individuals to align with or resist oppressive regimes? #AnneApplebaum's compelling essay originally published in the #Atlantic in 2020 #HistoryWillJudgetheComplicit, digs into the complex motivations that underpin political behaviours, through the telling of stories from real people and real experiences. Through her writing we can begin to understand #DonaldTrump and untangle the enigma of Republican responses to his presidency. Applebaum's essay delves into the contrasting political paths of #MittRomney and #LindseyGraham, whose decisions during Trump's era raise thought-provoking questions about loyalty, ideology, and personal conviction. How do their stories reflect broader patterns of complicity and resistance in the face of authoritarianism? We take a critical look at the Trump administration's impact on American politics, drawing connections to historical instances of political resistance and the enduring struggle between personal values and public pressure and the darker side of human nature. Finally, Applebaum's  helps us reflect on the themes of collaboration and complicity within the Republican Party, as we ponder the upcoming Canadian election, and think deeply about who will best serve our collective interests during this critical time in our history.
