The Thing + 12 Angry Men: A Conversation on Masculinity, Leadership and Paranoia - with writer Alex Grass
2026/10/09
Greetings! In this week's episode we're doing something a little different! What do 12 Angry Men and The Thing have in common? More than you might think. I'm joined by author Alex Grass for a thematic deep dive into Sidney Lumet's courtroom classic and John Carpenter's sci-fi horror masterpiece. We're exploring what happens when a group of men are trapped together, forced to make monumental decisions, and pushed to their psychological limits. From the jury room to an isolated Antarctic research station, we'll discuss leadership, masculinity, paranoia, and the fragile nature of trust. What makes someone a leader when nobody's in charge? Can reason overcome fear? And when the stakes are life or death, who can you really trust? This is one you definitely wanna check out. Enjoy! Young Frankenstein (1974) - with author Christopher 'Coyote' Choate
2026/08/22
Greetings! In this week’s episode of Stamper Cinema, we’re heading to Transylvania for one of the greatest comedies ever made: Young Frankenstein! Released in 1974 and directed by Mel Brooks, Young Frankenstein features an absolutely ridiculous comedy dream team, including Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman, Madeline Kahn, Cloris Leachman, Teri Garr, Kenneth Mars, and Richard Haydn. Shot in gorgeous black and white and deliberately modeled after the classic Universal horror films of the 1930s, the film recreates the look, atmosphere, sets, lighting and even filmmaking techniques of those old movies. The result is a comedy that somehow manages to be both a hilarious parody and a genuine love letter to classic horror. And joining me for the discussion is retired Air Force pilot and now author, Christopher “Coyote” Choate. Enjoy! UHF (1989) - with comedian Leah Renee
2026/08/14
Greetings! In this week’s episode, we’re flipping over to Channel 62 for the wonderfully weird 1989 cult comedy UHF, starring Weird Al Yankovic. When unemployed dreamer George Newman unexpectedly takes over a struggling local television station, he discovers that bizarre programming, a kung-fu movie host, a psychic, and a janitor named Stanley Spadowski might just be the secret to saving the station. Unfortunately, George also has to contend with ruthless rival station owner R.J. Fletcher, who would very much like to see Channel 62 disappear. Directed by Jay Levey and written by Levey and Yankovic, UHF is a loving—and completely unhinged—send-up of television, movies, advertising, pop culture, and pretty much anything else Weird Al could parody. Joining me for this trip is the hilarious comedian Leah Renee! We'll talk Weird Al, the movie's incredible supporting cast, the best sketches and parodies, Stanley Spadowski, memorable quotes, the film's initial reception and box-office disappointment, and how UHF eventually found its audience as a beloved cult classic. Enjoy! A Hard Day's Night (1964) - with author Kristin Massey
2026/04/14
Greetings! In this week's  episode, we’re diving into A Hard Day’s Night (1964)—the film that captured Beatlemania at full throttle and quietly changed the language of movies, music, and pop culture. And joining us this time around is Kristin Massey author of The J.O.A.T. Life Lessons from a Jill of All Trades. I'm super excited to share this conversation with Kristin. She is a multitalented creative with an exciting story. First up, she toured the nation as a recording artist with her band, Red Siren (All Is Forgiven; Mercury/Polygram).  She has since leveraged her vocal talents to become a successful voice-over artist for Fortune 500 companies such as FedEx, Sysco, and VISA. Oh! She also makes a mean cocktail too. Enjoy! Kristin's link https://thejoatbook.com Stamper Cinema links https://www.stampercinema.com Want be a guest on Stamper Cinema? Josie and the Pussycats (2001) - with Edward Miskie
2026/04/03
Greetings! In this week's episode we discuss Josie and the Pussycats, the neon-soaked, bubblegum pop comedy that crashed at the box office.  At first glance, Josie and the Pussycats is a teen movie about a girl band hitting it big. But underneath it's an absolutely brilliant, razor-sharp satire about consumer culture, corporate control, and the way music (and identity) gets sold to us. And walking us through it (between some hilariously astute takes on Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut) is Edward Miskie (writer/producer/sometimes performer). Edward is also the founder of The Remission Film Festival, which premiers for the first time April 17th, 2026. This festival focuses on creators who shed light on the experience of life before, during, & after cancer.  This is an episode you must hear.  Josie and the Pussycats links https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0236348/ https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/josie_and_the_pussycats Edward Miskie links https://www.remissionfilmfest.com/main https://www.edwardmiskie.com Stamper Cinema links https://www.stampercinema.com Want to be a guest on Stamper Cinema? Caddyshack (1980) - with podcaster Kirsten Rudberg
2026/03/30
Greeting! In this week's Stamper Cinema, we tee up one of the most chaotic, quotable, and beloved comedies of the 1980s—Caddyshack. Returning the podcast to talk about it is podcaster extraordinaire and all-around amazing human, Kirsten Rudberg (Byte Sized Blessings)!  Directed by Harold Ramis, this golf-course-set comedy throws structure out the window and replaces it with Bill Murray’s improvised monologues, Rodney Dangerfield’s relentless insults, Chevy Chase’s effortless cool, and a gopher with a serious attitude problem. Set at the prestigious Bushwood Country Club, Caddyshack explores class conflict (slob vs snob), rebellion, and absurdity through a loose collection of characters who all seem to be in different movies and somehow create magic together. Despite mixed reviews upon release, Caddyshack became a massive hit and a cornerstone of American comedy, influencing generations of comedians and earning its place as one of the most quoted films ever made. In this episode, Kirsten and I dive into behind-the-scenes madness, unforgettable performances, iconic lines, and the strange alchemy that turned a barely-scripted production into a cult classic. Plus - Kirsten gives the gopher the respect it deserves. Enjoy! The Blues Brothers (1980) - with actor Kyle Merrick
2026/03/07
Greetings! In this episode of Stamper Cinema, we’re putting the band back together to talk about the 1980 cult comedy classic The Blues Brothers. What began as a quirky musical sketch on Saturday Night Live somehow evolved into one of the most unique films of its era.  Joining us to break it all down is actor Kyle Merrick. We explore how a genuine love for blues and soul music turned a late-night comedy bit into a real touring band, and eventually into a major Hollywood production directed by John Landis. The episode covers the film’s simple but effective story: newly released ex-con Jake Blues and his brother Elwood embark on a “mission from God” to reunite their band and save the Catholic orphanage that raised them. Along the way they dodge police, anger rival musicians, and leave an absolutely insane trail of destruction across Chicago. We also look at the film’s incredible musical lineup, featuring legendary performers like James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, and Cab Calloway. Other topics include: The chaotic and ambitious production of the film The record-setting car chases and stunt work The lasting legacy of The Blues Brothers as one of the most successful films based on an SNL sketch The movie’s cultural impact and continued popularity with audiences Of course, no conversation about The Blues Brothers would be complete without revisiting some of the film’s most iconic and quotable lines, including the legendary “106 miles to Chicago” speech and the famous declaration that the brothers are “on a mission from God.” Enjoy!
