195 The Winning Olympic Mindset–Justin Kavanaugh
2026/09/22
Olympic coach, Justin Kavanaugh - or Coach Kav - spent his career closing the gap between where elite athletes are and where they want to be. In this episode he describes the 'premortem', a tool for finding every reason a plan could fail before you commit to it, De Bono’s six thinking hats, and the 3-part feedback framework Kav's wife uses to separate venting from a genuine ask for help. If you or your team freeze before big decisions, or feedback conversations keep going sideways, this conversation with host Nina Sunday gives you tools that work in both high-stakes sport and everyday leadership. Experience our episodes in a whole new way. Watch every video version on our YouTube channel and subscribe to catch the next release: https://www.youtube.com/@manageselfleadotherspodcast?sub_confirmation=1 "Hope is a drug. It's not a strategy." Justin Kavanaugh IN THIS EPISODE [0:07] The coach's job is to strip decisions from the athlete before the race, so they step into competition with a full mental gas tank. [3:04] Closing the gap between where someone is now and where they want to be. [3:19] The 3 attributes of an Olympic mindset: speed, clarity and execution under pressure. [3:37] Why most people default to slow decisions, and why speed actually produces a better one. [4:23] Hesitancy grows cobwebs in the brain; the fix is to act, then pivot on the result. [4:38] Anxiety and adrenaline look identical at a neuroscience level. The difference is where you channel the focus. [5:26] Sleeping on a decision and trusting the subconscious to settle overnight. [5:56] The snow globe metaphor: let the dust settle and the picture gets clear. [6:43] Zone of genius during the race itself, and why big decisions belong before it starts, not during. [7:01] Scenario mapping and if-this-then-that rehearsal ahead of the moment that matters. [7:54] Mapping the dozens of small decisions hidden inside one big one. [8:18] Getting clear on the goal and the team's job before the work starts: the work before the work. [9:22] Always look for the second right answer instead of settling for the first idea. [9:45] The premortem: working backwards from failure to find what killed the project -before it happens. [10:44] How to run a premortem with a team, borrowed from the military After Action report. [11:34] The premortem as a form of black hat thinking, not pessimism. [12:13] Hope is a drug, not a strategy: the six thinking hats and building a strong desired outcome. [13:23] Courage before motivation. Confidence comes from having already taken the first step. [14:48] Primed Mind, the 3 ingredients of a high performance environment, and shorten blind spots through the Johari Window framework. [16:49] The 3H framework his wife uses for feedback: hear me out, help me, or handle it for me. [18:20] Who Justin works with, and the two different playbooks for businesses under $10,000,000 and businesses scaling past it. [19:59] Why Justin still runs free webinars for his small business website clients on SitesAtScale.com [20:55] A business mastermind with Brisbane, Sydney and Adelaide clients flying in, and an office in the Philippines. [21:26] Justin's own coaches: a mentor in Perth, a wife who leads Gen AI, and a nine-year-old son who keeps him honest. 192 ACT!: The First CRM Ever Built -- Mike Muhney
2026/08/11
The origin story of ACT, the software that started the CRM industry, and the investor lunch that could have ended it all. [0:01] Introducing Mike Muhney, co-inventor of ACT, and how customer relationship management existed before computers, the internet or Salesforce. [1:18] The "hail Mary" moment; realising a first product had failed with only $15,000 left of a $100,000 investment. [2:20] A holiday weekend brainstorm shifts the focus from tracking activities to tracking relationships. [3:15] An IBM sales school lesson on why you should walk into a first meeting like you're making a friend, not closing a deal. [5:10] How asking questions instead of pitching creates a psychological transference of trust with a client. [7:40] What early company culture looked like: choosing people for integrity, vulnerability and an absence of ego. [9:00] Why real relationships require face to face connection, not social media. [11:20] The napkin plan; architecting an entire product in a month before the investor's visit. [12:40] The lunch where an investor says no to a refund and instead doubles down with more money. [14:30] A late night pitch at a mentor's house turns into $400,000 in cheques by the end of the evening. [16:20] ACT launches nine months later, and why enthusiasm inside a company is as contagious as negativity. [18:00] The Comdex trade show gamble: fifty chairs, a packed booth, and a strategy nobody else was using. [19:40] A stranger with a million dollars in cash turns out to be Kevin O'Leary, and the offers keep climbing from there. [21:10] A teaser for the next episode: why ACT's co-inventors are building a new relationship focused platform, Contata. [22:00] ABOUT MIKE MUHNEY Mike Muhney is the co-inventor of ACT!, the software credited with launching the multi-billion dollar CRM industry. Released in 1987, before the internet and before Salesforce existed, ACT! grew from a failed first product and a desperate Fourth of July brainstorm into a tool used by tens of millions of salespeople worldwide. Mike went on to co-found Contata, a new relationship focused platform built to bring the "R" back into customer relationship management. 191 Remove Your Brain Blinkers--Anthony Bonnici
2026/07/28
“Don’t drink bad coffee.” Anthony Bonnici’s six-letter model for how we sabotage ourselves without noticing, from a guest who spent 13 years leading pharmaceutical sales and marketing teams, with brands worth over $150 million, before walking away from corporate life in 2005 to help hundreds of thousands of people across five continents remove the beliefs that block high performance. In this episode he explains the COFFEE model, six ways we sabotage ourselves through self-talk, the ACID process for shifting a limiting belief, and the exercise where a room of 600 people who all say “I can’t draw” leave holding a pastel sketch. If you lead a team member who rules themselves out before they’ve tried, this conversation gives you a way to raise it that invites curiosity instead of an accusation. Experience our episodes in a whole new way. Watch every video version on our YouTube channel and subscribe to catch the next release: https://www.youtube.com/@manageselfleadotherspodcast?sub_confirmation=1 IN THIS EPISODE [1:11] The blinkers metaphor behind the book title, and how a room of 600 people who all said “I can’t draw” left holding a pastel sketch inside 60 minutes. [4:42] The COFFEE model: catastrophise, overgeneralise, filter, forecast, emotionalise and effectualise, six ways self-talk sabotages performance. [10:51] The Oz principle, above and below the line thinking, and a harmaceutical case study where sales blamed marketing until the team drew a line under the argument and moved to solutions. [12:33] When “team repair” work gets invited in, and the ACID process for shifting a limiting belief: aware, challenge, imagine, do. [17:17] NLP, and the manager’s dilemma: how to invite a team member to question their own limiting belief without accusing them of having one. [21:52] Where to find Brain Blinkers and get in touch with Anthony. ABOUT ANTHONY BONNICI Anthony Bonnici is a Certified Speaking Professional (CSP), NLP practitioner, and author of Brain Blinkers. He spent 13 years in the pharmaceutical industry leading sales and marketing teams with brands worth over $150 million before leaving corporate life in 2005. 190 Gravitas: Confident Communication--Dr Louise Mahler
2026/07/07
[0:06] The psychology of vocal fry. Why ending a sentence in vocal fry removes commitment from your message. [1:07] Introducing Dr Louise Mahler: from singing opera on the great stages of Europe to Top 30 Global Guru in body language, vocal intelligence and communication; author of the bestselling book, Gravitas. [1:50] What's wrong with communication today? We've left out the most important part - delivery. [2:30] How gestures fell out of fashion after World War Two, and why body language theory of the 1970s-80s got it wrong; communication is about bringing your best, not pandering to others' perceptions. [3:30] Cicero: it's not about how to be understood; it's how not to be misunderstood. [4:10] The five canons of rhetoric, and why delivery was considered the most important; gravitas as the manner of trust and respect. [5:20] Gravitas is not seriousness; it's equally weighted with humour and levity. Cicero was said to be the funniest man in ancient Rome. [6:30] A keynote timing mix-up in front of hundreds of CFOs, and how walking on stage laughing set the room on fire. [7:20] Laughter is the bouncing of the diaphragm; only people who trust you will laugh with you. [7:50] Do some people just have executive presence, or can it be learnt? It's always learnt. [8:40] Creating anchors in the air with gestures; what the ancients called architecturally designing your material. [9:40] Three reasons to move: breathing, visual interest, and memory . . . how Roman orators presented for hours without notes. [11:00] The three rules of gestures: always congruent, never repeated more than twice, and hold each gesture until the next one. [12:20] Why breathing matters so much: if the breath doesn't work, go home. What a held diaphragm does to your voice and why upper-body tension reads as aggression. [14:00] Do you need vocal warm-ups before a meeting? The voice is warm all the time; just kick the diaphragm free. [15:00] A fix for nerves and self-doubt: confidence is competence. Without training there is no knowledge; without knowledge there is no confidence. [16:30] On a good day natural talent will arise; on a bad day they fall back on the craft. The amateur practises till they get it right; the professional practises till they can't get it wrong. [17:40] Where practice really happens: internalising your material in everyday life so it comes out authentically, improvised within a framework. [19:00] How metaphor speaks to the unconscious mind; opening with a creative link that connects to your message. [20:20] The autostereogram (magic eye picture) as a metaphor for transformational change: refocus the eyes and see the real picture behind the abstract. [21:20] Vocal fry explained: closing the throat, jamming the diaphragm, and why salespeople sabotage the end of their sentences. You never run out of breath; you only run into tension. [22:30] One thing to do before a big meeting tomorrow: breathe out, throw the elbows off the body, and show your palms - the gesture of trust. [23:00] How to work with Dr Louise Mahler: online and face-to-face coaching, keynotes and executive team work. 189 Hidden Beliefs Sabotage Leaders—Jim Britt
2026/06/15
Jim Britt turns one word into a leadership gut-punch: resourceful. Then, he goes even further: what if source is love, and fear is something we accidentally fall in love with instead? In this episode, you’ll hear a true story of losing everything, making one decision not to quit, and watching opportunity appear almost on cue. We also unpack the hidden beliefs and self-talk that sabotage leaders, plus the approval-and-control paradox that makes smart people freeze when it matters most. [3:10] A rock-bottom story: losing everything, choosing not to quit, and the single decision that changed the trajectory. [5:12] Taking action when you have almost nothing . . . and how one small move can unlock unexpected opportunity. [6:26] What most people do wrongly when they try hard but get no results . . . and how coaching can flip outcomes fast. [7:45] Why vision boards are optional but decisions are not . . . and how progress is built in “today,” not someday. [8:51] Why we set a goal, make a decision, then generate fear to stop ourselves . . . and the hidden role of subconscious self-talk. [9:36] How core beliefs formed in the first six years can shape adult confidence, relationships, and leadership behaviour at work. [10:20] What “not feeling worthy” can look like in adulthood . . . from staying silent in meetings to self-sabotaging success. [12:13] Why speaking to an audience can feel like facing predators . . . and how ancient survival wiring shows up as modern fear. [12:55] The approval and control paradox: why needing approval blocks it, and why needing control creates more anxiety. [13:22] How letting go of approval and control helps you become more yourself . . . and why that is what audiences respond to. [14:44] A “never again” public speaking moment . . . and how to turn a rough first attempt into skill-building rather than avoidance. [16:12] How to identify your mindset by looking at results in any area of life . . . and why decisions quietly shape how you show up. [17:29] Why leaders inside organisations should write a book . . . using publishing as credibility, conversation fuel, and visibility. [18:23] Personal branding for employed leaders . . . and how being published can help you rise through the ranks. [19:12] Practical advice for success: become “resourceful” by reconnecting to source . . . and choosing vision over fear. [2:18] Seeing customer journeys like lines of code and how one broken step can stop the entire business from working. [3:58] Where leaders should look first to find automation opportunities in their own workflows. [4:33] Using frequency as a decision filter to identify tasks that are worth automating and those that are not. [5:38] How long-standing annoyances and repeated behaviours signal high-value automation opportunities. [6:22] Why customer impact matters more than time savings when designing automated systems. [6:59] Creating intimacy at scale by personalising automated messages without becoming transactional. [8:07] Leveraging underutilised assets such as books, podcasts and content to strengthen automated touchpoints. [9:10] Building simple systems first and then reusing them for strategic leverage across multiple scenarios. [10:05] Using automation as a delivery system rather than relying on a single channel like email. [12:41] Choosing the right communication tools to deepen relationships, not just broadcast messages. [13:08] Reusing automation frameworks for anniversaries, milestones and ongoing client touchpoints. [14:26] Owning the indecision period after proposals are sent and why most businesses lose momentum here. [16:39] Using automation and AI notes to personalise long-term follow-ups months or years later. [18:02] Why templates combined with meaningful data create powerful, human-sounding automation. [18:47] The trade-off between learning automation yourself versus working with an expert. 2026/05/05
Lawrence Armstrong helps leaders turn strategy into something you can actually see. In this episode, he reveals the metaphors that kept a fast-growing firm nimble and future-ready: fleet of ships vs ocean liner, roadrunner vs coyote, the visible light spectrum for smart diversification, and the flywheel moment when hard work suddenly starts pulling you forward. If you lead a team through change, growth, or competing priorities, this conversation will give you language that sticks and frameworks people will remember. 186 The Empathy Gap–Daniel Murray
2026/04/21
In the ‘Manage Self, Lead Others’ emotional intelligence and leadership podcast, Daniel Murray brings empathy back to where it belongs - at work, right in the middle of performance, trust, and everyday decisions.   In this episode, you’ll learn how empathy becomes a practical leadership tool, what “consciously curious” looks like in real conversations, and why people don’t resist change, they resist feeling ignored. The outcome is shaped by belief, buy-in, and what happens during implementation.     [12:26] Communicating the “why” and the context … How to explain the path to the decision so teams stop resisting the change.     [14:10] Humility in leadership calls … Inviting input, staying open to course-correction, and treating change as a shared relationship.     [15:49] The real trust question: shifting from “who do I trust?” to “who trusts me?” and how that changes everything.     [17:33] The psychology of uncertainty … How the brain fills gaps with worst-case scenarios, and why leaders must reduce ambiguity.     [20:19] Turning empathy into performance, what empathy looks like in feedback, accountability, and leading teams through change.     Contact DANIEL MURRAY   https://danielmurray.au/ https://theempathygap.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/daniel-empathicconsulting/?originalSubdomain=au     ABOUT PODCAST HOST, NINA SUNDAY   Nina Sunday’s latest book, ‘’Manage Self, Lead Others: Constructive Conversations, True Self-Leadership, and Culture You Can’t Fake’’ now on Amazon -  paperback, kindle or audiobook.   Amazon USA https://a.co/d/3WaplI9 Amazon Australia https://amzn.asia/d/0KwghaM   You can read any Kindle eBook on your PC, laptop or phone; you don’t need a Kindle device.    === To learn more about face-to-face training programs with Nina Sunday or one of her experienced Facilitators from Brainpower Training Pty Ltd in Australia Pacific, visit: https://www.brainpowertraining.com.au...   === To visit Nina Sunday's speaker site for global in-person speaking bookings visit: https://www.ninasunday.com/   === Connect with Nina Sunday on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/ninasunday/   === To subscribe to Nina Sunday's blog go to https://www.brainpowertraining.com.au/ and scroll to bottom of the page to register       Learn more about your ad choices.
