The New York Mets had their tune-up before the big showdown with the Philadelphia Phillies, and it did not go well. The Mets dropped 3 of 4 games to the Miami Marlins, while the Phillies swept the Washington Nationals, shrinking the Mets' division lead to just .5 game. The New York Mets acquired Javier Baez at the trade deadline! Baez provided a shot in the arm on Saturday night with a two-run homer, and he did help the Mets win that game, but they still lost two-out-of-three to the Cincinnati Reds. After an uplifting series win vs. Washington, the New York Mets hit an immediate, sharp decline in their early roller coaster season, with a two-game sweep at the hands of the Red Sox.

After a sweep in Wrigley Field at the hands of the Cubs, the New York Mets returned home for a weekend series against the Washington Nationals. Jacob deGrom Jacob deGrom'd his way to a 2-hit shutout on Friday night. The Mets defense proved to be the issue on Saturday. The New York Mets just did something they didn't do at all in 2020: win consecutive series.  Excellent pitching performances from Jacob deGrom and Marcus Stroman helped the Mets take 2 of 3 from the Colorado Rockies. After a rough first five-plus games of the 2021 season, the New York Mets bounced back in a big way and swept the Philadelphia Phillies.
