2024 Ford Maverick Tremor: Flexing Compact Muscles
2024/02/20
The Ford Maverick might have been the answer for a lot of compact pickup fans' woes. The small pickup’s low price, small size, and useful bed have shaped up to create long wait times for prospective customers. Despite no shortage in sales, Ford expanded the lineup of its Tremor option package and the Maverick, by putting the two together. The Ford Maverick Tremor might not be as extreme as its full-size F-150 counterpart, but it does see some upgraded tires, a revised suspension, and a graphics package. Available on all-wheel-drive equipped and 2.0-liter EcoBoost-powered Maverick XLT and Lariats, this option package does limit your Maverick choices but makes up for it with a more capable rig off paved roads.   On this episode of Quick Spin, Autoweek’s executive editor Tom Murphy hops behind the wheel of the 2024 Ford Maverick Tremor and puts it through its paces. Murphy takes you on a guided tour of Ford’s compact pickup and highlights some of his favorite features. Later, Murphy takes you on a live drive review of this Maverick Tremor to show you how it feels in the real world. Adding to those segments, Murphy chats with host Wesley Wren about the Ford Maverick, the tremor package, and how the Maverick stacks up against the competition. Closing the show, the pair break down what makes the Maverick special.

Talking Cars with the Boss: 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross and 2023 Mazda CX-5
2024/02/19
The era of the crossover is here. Once the sedan was king, then the wagon became the family hauler, and then the minivan. Now, it’s time for crossovers. Naturally, that means automakers will keep finding spaces to throw new models and leverage existing names. When it comes to Toyota, it’s hard to find a name that resonates more than Corolla or Camry, which makes one of them a perfect addition to the crossover lineup. Toyota’s Corolla Cross leverages the existing love for the Corolla’s legacy, but gives shoppers, well, a crossover. Mazda approached its crossover and SUV naming conventions from a different angle. The company stuck with its alphanumeric system that its customers have grown to learn. Of course, the CX-5 is no spring chicken when it comes to the crossover sales sheet and has been in Mazda’s lineup for over a decade. On this bonus episode of Quick Spin Talking Cars with the Boss, host Wesley Wren chats with Autoweek’s boss: Natalie Neff. The pair chat about Neff’s time with these two crossovers, and give context to the two models. Neff and Wren chat about the evolving crossover space, the hybrid powertrain in the Corolla Cross, and the consistent styling of Mazda’s crossovers.

2024 Mazda CX-90 Review: Stiff Competition
2024/02/13
With Mazda’s CX-9 going away, the company needed to replace its largest offering with something more competitive in what might be the most competitive space in the car business. Not deviating too far from its established naming convention, Mazda showed off the new, CX-90 last year and ushered in a new 3.3-liter turbocharged I6 mild-hybrid powertrain. Slightly longer than the outgoing CX-9 in both name and vehicle length, the CX-90 does effectively the same job for Mazda as its outgoing crossover: give Mazda shoppers something with plenty of seats and space. Mazda offers its latest family hauler in two hybrid versions and a lone PHEV version, with the hybrid models packing the 3.3-liter I6 under the hood. The plug-in models sport a 2.5-liter I4 that works with an electric motor to make a combined 323 hp. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the 2024 Mazda CX-90 to put it through its paces. Wren takes you on a guided tour of this 3.3-liter-powered Mazda CX-90 to highlight its third-row room, cargo space, and some of his favorite features. Later, Wren takes you along on a live drive review of this large Mazda crossover. Adding to this, Wren chats with Autoweek’s Patrick Carone about the Mazda CX-90’s competition, its powertrain and more. Closing the show, the pair breaks down what makes the 2024 Mazda CX-90 special.

2024 Morgan Super 3: Funky and Fun
2024/02/06
The Morgan Motor Company discontinued its legendary 3-Wheeler a few years back, but it would be hard for Morgan to move on without a three-wheeled machine in its roster. While the Harley-Davidson-based V-twin is gone, the Morgan Super 3 carries Morgan’s three-wheel torch into the next generation. Joining the three-wheel ranks is a similar cylinder count. The ’24 Morgan Super 3 sports a 1.5-liter I3 sourced from Ford. This Ford 1.5-liter sends 118 hp and 111 lb-ft of torque to the lone rear wheel through a five-speed manual transmission. On this episode of Quick Spin, Autoweek’s Mark Vaughn hops behind the wheel of the Morgan Super 3 to put it through its paces. Vaughn walks you around this three-wheeled Morgan highlights some of his favorite features, and explains how one gets into and starts the Morgan. Later, Vaughn takes you along for a live drive review. Adding to these segments, Vaughn chats with host Wesley Wren about the Morgan Super 3, its competition, and its space in the car world. Closing the show, the pair breaks down what makes the 2024 Morgan Super 3 special.

2024 Bentley Flying Spur Review: Rising to a Name
2024/01/30
The Bentley Flying Spur dropped Continental from its name nearly over a decade ago but doesn’t leave the name’s heritage. From the mythos of the Blue Train to the demands of its clientele, Bentley’s large Flying Spur sedan has big shoes to fill. Helping it live up to those lofty expectations, Bentley has equipped the Flying Spur with three different powertrains. There’s a Flying Spur hybrid, for those who want to be more conscious of their consumption, a V8 for those who are concerned about the exhaust note, and a W12 for the discerning customer who loves twelve cylinders. While we’ve sampled the Flying Spur hybrid, this particular tester’s 4.0-liter V8 sends 542 hp and 568 through the eight-speed automatic transmission. From there, power travels through an all-wheel-drive system before making its way to the wheels. On this episode of Quick Spin, Autoweek’s Mark Vaughn hops behind the wheel of the 2024 Bentley Flying Spur and puts it through its paces. Vaughn takes you on a tour of the Flying Spur to highlight some of his favorite features and then takes you along on a live drive review. Joining those segments, Vaughn chats with host Wesley Wren about his time with the Bentley. The pair discuss the Flying Spur’s competition, its price, and more. 2023 Toyota GR Corolla: A Rally-Inspired Treat
2024/01/23
The Toyota GR Yaris is one of the coolest and weirdest cars to ever leave a Toyota factory. The combination of an altered Yaris shell, a high-strung turbocharged three-cylinder, and an all-wheel drive system made hot hatch fans in the U.S. jealous. Well, Toyota finally answered the calls of bringing over a rally-inspired hatchback to the U.S., but in the larger Corolla shell. Still sporting a highly strung 1.6-liter I3 under its hood, the GR Corolla helps give North American Toyota fans a rally-inspired option. That 1.6-liter sends 300 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque through a six-speed manual transmission and into an all-wheel drive system. On this episode of Quick Spin, associate editor Emmet White hops behind the wheel of the ’23 Toyota GR Corolla and puts it through its paces. White takes you on a guided tour of the GR Corolla and highlights some of his favorite features. Later, White takes you along for a live drive review to highlight his experiences on the road. 2023 Toyota GR86: Budget Fun
2024/01/16
After nearly a decade, the Scion FR-S or Toyota 86 saw a successor. Now planted formerly under the Toyota banner, the sports coupe has formally entered its second generation. The second-gen Toyota 86 adopts the Gazoo Racing naming conventions and fixes some of the problems customers felt with the first-generation models. The team at Toyota and Subaru increased engine displacement and massaged the tuning to help overcome the older model’s lack of midrange power. Now packing a 2.4-liter flat-four under the hood, the GR86 sends 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque through either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. Power travels exclusively to the rear wheels. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the 2023 Toyota GR86 and puts it through its paces. 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale: Alfa's Mainstream Play
2024/01/09
Alfa Romeo might be best known for its Formula 1 presence, or its sporty convertibles that help stop weddings in major motion pictures. Unfortunately, the two-seat cabriolet isn’t exactly helping major automakers keep their lights on. Steering into the meat of the market, the folks at Alfa Romeo launched a sub-compact crossover dubbed Tonale. The Tonale might not be as exciting as its larger Stelvio sibling, or the long list of sporty Alfas of yesteryear, but it does help spread the brand’s awareness and give shoppers something different in a sea of crossovers. Powering the Tonale is exclusively a plug-in hybrid powertrain that blends a 1.3-liter I4 with a hybrid system to send 285 hp to the wheels. On this episode of Quick Spin, Autoweek’s Patrick Carone hops behind the wheel of the 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale and puts it through its paces. Carone walks you around the Tonale and highlights some of his favorite features. Later, Carone takes you along for a live drive review. Adding to these segments, Carone chats with host Wesley Wren about the Tonale’s similarities to the Dodge Hornet, Alfa’s presence in the United States, and more. Closing the show, the pair break down what makes the 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale special.

2024 Rolls-Royce Spectre: Ultimate Luxury
2024/01/02
When it comes to luxury cars, it’s hard to picture something more opulent than a machine from Rolls-Royce. The folks at Rolls-Royce have made some of the finest luxury cars on the road over the last century, and it seems like the company won’t slow down as it transitions into electric powertrains. The company’s first BEV bears the name Spectre, which is fitting with its quiet approach. The Rolls-Royce Spectre packs a pair of electric motors that rely on the 102 kWh battery pack for energy. This ultra-luxe cruiser rides on optional 23-inch wheels, which actually cost the Spectre range. On this episode of Quick Spin, Autoweek’s Mark Vaughn hops behind the wheel of the all-electric Rolls-Royce and puts it through its paces. Vaughn takes you on a guided tour of the ’24 Rolls-Royce Spectre and highlights some of his favorite features. Later, Vaughn takes you along on a live drive review of this all-electric Rolls-Royce. 2023 Dodge Challenger Swinger: Instant Nostalgia
2023/12/26
The Dodge Challenger is officially gone. Celebrating its departure, Dodge and Chrysler rolled out special Last Call models of its popular Challenger, Charger and 300 models to celebrate what was and put an exclamation mark on a run of reborn muscle machines. Spread across the R/T Scat Pack and Hellcat models, Dodge is sending away its Charger and Challenger in style, with the packages nodding at popular models of yesteryear. One of the models slated for the Challenger is dubbed Swinger, which packs a special stripe, limited colors and an array of special styling features. While this limited production Swinger added some interesting features to the wide-body Challenger Scat Pack, the bones were the same. Under this Challenger’s hood is a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 that sends 485 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque through either a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic. 2023 GMC Yukon Review: Comfort Over Cargo
2023/12/19
Like the Cadillac Escalade from a few weeks ago, GMC’s body-on-frame SUV is predictably posh on its upmarket trim variants. Also like Cadillac’s Escalade, the GMC Yukon is based on the General Motors body-on-frame platform that underpins a Chevrolet analog. Like the rest of this GM family of SUVs, the Yukon entered its fifth generation in ’21 and ditched its rear stick axle. Now sporting an independent rear suspension, the Yukon Denali’s air suspension makes for an even smoother ride. The Yukon Denali comes with 6.2 liters of V8 power under the hood, which sends 420 hp and 460 lb-ft through a ten-speed transmission. Of course, the entry-level Yukon models come with the smaller 5.3-liter V8 as standard equipment, but the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel I6. On this episode of Quick Spin Hearst Autos Gear Team member Jon Langston hopped behind a Super Cruise equipped Yukon Denali. Langston takes you on a guided tour of a ’23 Yukon Denali and highlights some of his favorite features. Langston also takes you along for a live drive review. Adding to these segments, Langston chats with host Wesley Wren about the Yukon Denali, his experience on a 1,600-mile road trip, and more. Closing the show, the pair break down what makes the 2023 Yukon Denali special.

2023 Hyundai Elantra N: Keeping Sport Compacts Alive
2023/12/12
Hyundai’s N Division is just over a decade old, but it’s already helping once-thriving segments. Once upon a time, the world was flooded with sporty compacts from automakers across the board, from Ford’s Focus and Fiesta hot hatchbacks to the Nissan Sentra SE-R, and everything in between. Despite the sport compact herd thinning out, the folks at Hyundai jumped into the fray with a hopped-up Elantra. Dubbed the Elantra N, this sedan packs a 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 under the hood that sends 276 hp to the front wheels by way of a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the 2023 Hyundai Elantra N and puts it through its paces. Wren takes you on a guided tour of the Elantra N and highlights some of his favorite features. Later in the show, Wren takes you along for a live drive review. Adding to the mix, Wren chats with Autoweek’s Emmet White, who experienced the DCT variant of the Elantra N. The pair talk share their experiences, compare the Elantra N to the competition, and more.
