How to talk to kids about puberty with Michelle Mitchell
2021/09/19
Let's talk PUBERTY. Specifically, how to broach this tricky topic with our kids!  We know the onset of puberty is a critical time for parents to provide both the education and support that our kids need to feel confident in their growing and changing bodies. But what’s the right time to start teaching our kids the ins and outs of puberty, how much information is TOO much, and what’s the best way to have open informative conversations with our kids without making them crawl up into themselves and die of embarrassment?  To take us through this subject and help us with some tips to guiding our kids through what to expect in their coming-of-age years, we chat with Michelle Mitchell, author of A Girl’s Guide to Puberty and A Guy’s Guide to Puberty. These books, designed to be read by and shared with our kids are jam packed with need-to-know info on puberty, they’re accessible for kids at the same time as offering a great jumping off point for parents to start these important conversations. There's a window of opportunity we have with tweens BEFORE the teenager roller door goes up (and they decide they already know everything)! Seize this opportunity, it's now or never! It's time to establish yourself as a trusted go-to person and reliable source of info about all things growing up and Michelle is going to help set us up for success!  Host: Liv @eeniemeeniemineymum Guest: Michelle Mitchell, Author of A Girl's Guide to Puberty & A Guy's Guide to Puberty @authormichellemitchell For resources & books: https://michellemitchell.org/ For more KIDDO content: @kiddomag http://www.kiddomag.com.au
Empowering young kids & teaching self acceptance with Scott Stuart
2021/08/22
Scott Stuart is an Aussie dad and best-selling children’s book author who is committed to creating content that empowers young kids. In fact, his messages about self-acceptance have been seen over 100 million times on social media. Yep, that was 100 million times. You see, before Scott rocketed to fame on Instagram and Tik Tok, he was like a lot of parents, just learning how to be the best dad he can be. When his young son fell in love with Queen Elsa from Frozen and was nervous to wear an Elsa dress alone to see Frozen 2 at the cinema, Scott embraced any discomfort and wore one right alongside him.                A video of them in their Elsa costumes together quickly went viral online and these days, Scott channels his writing, illustrating and social presence around creating inclusive content for young kids and parents. He gets really honest about his own journey and experiences and talks to us about his best-selling children’s books. Plus shares some great tips along the way. Understanding the impact of birth order with Michael Grose
2021/07/12
Are you the first born, a middle child or youngest in your family? Are you a perfectionist, a free spirit or a risk taker? According to the experts, position in the family – or your birth order – can affect your personality, behaviour and view of the world. In fact, some consider birth order to be one of the most powerful influences on personality. In this episode we chat with one of Australia’s leading parenting writers, Michael Grose, who wrote the very popular book “Why first-borns rule the world and later-borns want to change it”. The book unpacks birth order theory and explains how children in a family that share the same gene pool, similar socio economic environments and experience similar parenting styles can still have fundamentally different personalities, interests and even careers as adults, based on their birth order. The book was first published in 2003 – this year it’s been updated and rereleased with revised info based on modern families that are getting smaller. We chat with Michael Grose about how birth order can impact your personality and how understanding it can actually make us better parents. Teaching kids about consent, with Body Safety Educator Jayneen Sanders
2021/06/14
In this episode we’re tackling the important issue of teaching our kids about consent. How do we ensure our younger children know about and understand consent? It’s not always easy having these conversations with our kids, but it’s absolutely necessary. Parents are asking at what age should this conversation happen, how should it be introduced? How should we actually be talking about it? The good news is you can start teaching kids about consent from a very young age, without confronting discussions about rape or sexual violation. Talking us through this topic is award winning author, educator and advocate, Jayneen Sanders. Jayneen has actively advocated for body safety, gender equality and respectful relationship education being taught both in homes and in schools for over twelve years and has written and published several books on consent for children and parents including; ‘No Means No’, ‘My Body! What I Say Goes!’, ‘Some Secrets Should Never Be Kept’, ‘ABC of Body Safety & Consent’, ‘Let’s Talk About Body Boundaries, Consent & Respect’, and ‘Body Safety Education, A Parent’s Guide to Protecting Kids from Sexual Abuse’. Most of these books are suitable for children aged 3-9 years and give parents, carers, and educators the tools and framework to have conversations in age-appropriate ways with the children in their lives to educate and empower them. In this episode we cover topics including:  How and when to introduce the concept consent to young kids without relating it to sexPractical ways to model consent to childrenWhy kids should never be asked to keep secretsThe importance of teaching anatomically correct terminology for body parts Broaching sex ed with kidsCONTENT WARNING: In this episode, themes and references to sexual abuse and rape are covered.
