Description

Blink of an Eye, a new podcast with Louise Phipps Senft, explores stories of trauma, loss, awakening, and epiphanies. Ms. Senft recounts her experience navigating a life-changing accident that rendered her son, Archer, paralyzed from the neck on down, and expands the story with interviews of those behind the scene. Told through real journal entries and inspiring guests, Blink of an Eye will inspire you to explore the true nature of our relationships and interconnectedness in the face of an event that changes everything.

#331 Moonshots and Venture Philanthropy: A New Era at the Reeve Foundation
2026/10/21
#331 Moonshots and Venture Philanthropy: A New Era at the Reeve Foundation What if the key to curing paralysis requires us to look outside the traditional boundaries of medicine, and even beyond planet Earth? In this episode, Louise sits down with Dr. Marco Baptista, a neuroscientist and the Chief Scientific Officer at the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. Dr. Baptista shares his fascinating journey from studying physiological psychology as a first-generation Canadian in Toronto to leading groundbreaking research at the Michael J. Fox Foundation—where he sent LRRK2 protein crystallization experiments to the International Space Station to advance Parkinson's research. Now bringing his boundary-pushing philosophy to the spinal cord injury (SCI) community, Dr. Baptista unpacks why complex neurological conditions such as SCI demand a variety of therapies not just one, what is called combinatorial therapy, (such as combining transcutaneous epidural stimulation, peptides like NVG-291, and intensive rehab). He also highlights the critical need to break down academic silos through initiatives like the Open Data Commons, and how venture philanthropy funds like SCI Ventures are accelerating the notoriously slow process of commercializing lab discoveries. Finally, Dr. Baptista discusses the landmark FDA Patient-Focused Drug Development (PFDD) meeting and shares his ultimate moonshot: identifying the biological biomarkers that explain why some individuals show more resilience and recovery after an injury than others.    Links https://www.christopherreeve.org/ https://www.scipfdd.org/ https://odc-sci.org/   Have an idea or feedback for me? #330 The Exquisite Spinal Cord: Navigating Spinal Tumors and Their Acute Impact
2026/10/14
#330 The Exquisite Spinal Cord: Navigating Spinal Tumors and Their Acute Impact Louise sits down with Dr. Daniel Lubelski, a world-class neurosurgeon and the Director of Spine Tumor Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University, to explore a lesser-known cause of spinal cord injury: spinal tumors. Dr. Lubelski breaks down the biology of how tumors form inside and around the spinal cord, highlighting the surgical complexities of operating on an "exquisite" conduit with zero redundancy. He details the intricate balance of removing tumors while protecting vital nerve pathways, such as proprioception. Ultimately, Dr. Lubelski shares how modern neurosurgery is shifting its focus beyond simply removing a tumor to prioritizing the patient's long-term functional preservation and overall quality of life.   Links https://profiles.hopkinsmedicine.org/provider/daniel-lubelski/2707765 https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/neurology-neurosurgery   Have an idea or feedback for me? #329 From BCI Clinical Trials to the Patient-Focused Drug Development landmark meeting for FDA Clinical Trial Advocacy
2026/10/07
#329 From BCI Clinical Trials to the Patient-Focused Drug Development landmark meeting for FDA Clinical Trial Advocacy  Louise sits down with Ian Burkhart, a brain-computer interface pioneer, patient advocate, and co-founder of the BCI Pioneers Coalition. After sustaining a C5 spinal cord injury in 2010 at the age of nineteen, Ian made history as the first person to restore voluntary movement to a paralyzed hand using an implanted brain-computer interface. Ian shares his journey from his early days playing competitive lacrosse and studying video production at Ohio University to becoming a groundbreaking participant in a clinical trial conducted by Ohio State University and Battelle Medical Institute. He describes the profound experience of seeing his hand move in response to his thoughts, the reality of transitioning away from the trial when the device was removed, and the vital importance of incorporating lived experience into neurotechnology research. As the past president of the North American Spinal Cord Injury Consortium and a member of the FDA Patient Engagement Advisory Committee, Ian details the rigorous hurdles of translating medical devices from lab settings to commercial availability. He also highlights his recent work co-hosting the landmark externally led Patient-Focused Drug Development meeting, emphasizing the critical need for the FDA to hear directly from the spinal cord injury community and their caregivers to help shape future combination therapies, clinical trials, and biological advancements, and how YOU, those living with SCI, your families and care providers, can have your voices heard by the FDA in this critical next 30 days.
