Non-Formularity: A Non-Pathologising Approach to Understand and Support Children's Needs with Thedy Veliz
2026/06/28
In this episode, I'm joined by Dr Thedy Veliz, a child and family therapist and founder of the Institute for Non-Formulaic Youth, to explore his framework for non-formularity. Thedy Veliz, PhD, is a child and family therapist in private practice in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is the founder of the Institute for Non-Formulaic Youth. He recently completed his PhD at the California Institute of Integral Studies which is based in San Francisco. Dr. Veliz primarily works with parents of difficult children to help them understand the source of their children’s behavioral, learning, social, and emotional challenges. This understanding is then used to adjust their parenting interventions to downregulate their children’s sensitive nervous system. Dr. Veliz has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, a master’s in business administration, and a master’s in counseling psychology. Prior to becoming a psychotherapist, he held positions in engineering design and finance management at energy and technology companies.  Dr Thedy Veliz makes the case that these children aren't broken or bad, they're wired with a nervous system that's exquisitely susceptible to their environment, and that the variable we can actually change is the environment around them, not the child. We talk about why punishment so often backfires, why behaviour is the last thing to surface after a long and invisible build-up of stress, and the powerful shift from correcting our children to connecting with them. Thedy also shares the PACE stance for parents (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, Empathy) and the link between this sensitive neurobiology and real gifts like creativity, empathy and a fierce sense of social justice. Find out more at  https://www.nonformularity.com/ where you can also download Thedy's free parenting guide. Unmasking and Coming Home to Ourselves as Highly Sensitive People
2026/04/12
In this heartfelt and honest conversation, I am joined by integrative psychotherapist and HSP coach Simone De Costa, breathwork facilitator and coach Alan Friday, and Clinical Psychologist and conscious parenting coach Dr Genevieve Von Lob. We are the co-facilitation team behind the annual HSP Retreat in Devon. Together, they explore what it means to "unmask" - the process of shedding the adaptive personas we build to fit in, survive, and belong, and returning to our authentic selves. The conversation covers how masking often begins in childhood (especially for highly sensitive people), the roles we unconsciously take on, such as the people-pleaser, peacekeeper, or achiever, and the personal toll of living behind these masks over time. We each share our journey of unmasking - from burnout and crisis moments that became catalysts for deeper self-inquiry, to the gradual, courageous process of learning to trust our inner voice and body. We discuss how "coming home to yourself" is less about reaching a fixed destination and more about cultivating a safe, compassionate inner refuge - one built through embodied practices, self-acceptance, and genuine community. The episode closes with three practical tools for embodiment: breathwork and diaphragmatic breathing (Alan), the mindful body scan (Simone), and the three-sync check-in — tuning into thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations simultaneously (Genevieve). We also give a glimpse into our upcoming four-day HSP Retreat in Devon - a deeply nourishing, spacious, and welcoming container for sensitive people who are ready to finally exhale, belong, and be themselves. The Wild Sensitive, Unlocking the Power of The Highly Sensitive High Sensation Seeker with Randy Grasser and Annet van Duinen
2025/06/19
In this episode The Wild Sensitive, Unlocking the Power of The Highly Sensitive High Sensation Seeker I'm so excited to be talking with the inspiring Randy Grasser and Annet van Duinen.  With a rare combination of emotional depth and daring spirit, they are redefining what it means to be both Highly Sensitive (HSP) and High Sensation Seeking (HSS). Their lives are a living testament to this vibrant duality, walking the edge between stillness and adventure, introspection and bold exploration. Their mission is rooted in personal experience. Randy’s path has spanned over 50 countries and countless extremes, from surviving an avalanche and navigating wilderness trials to working in harsh industrial environments and creating a life-changing 26-day behavioral program for court-appointed teens. Each chapter of his journey uncovered a deeper truth: his sensitivity wasn’t a weakness, it was his greatest strength. Annet brings over a decade of coaching experience as a Professional Certified Coach (PCC), guiding individuals and organizations toward understanding, embracing, and leveraging sensitivity in powerful ways. A true explorer at heart, she combines emotional depth with bold curiosity, helping others find freedom and confidence in who they are, both in personal growth and professional leadership. Together, they are dedicated to educating and empowering others through every medium they can reach, be it their books, immersive retreats, online webinars and workshops, and meaningful conversations on social media. Their teachings offer a fresh, compassionate, and powerfully honest perspective, one that validates sensitivity as a strength while also honoring the craving for novelty, challenge, and growth that many HSPs feel but rarely understand. Sensitively Exploring Non-Ordinary Transformative Experiences (NOTEs) with Sameer Patel and Katie Mottram
2025/01/26
About the Speakers Katie has over 25 years of experience working in the mental health field, and her recent research, Is There Meaning in Madness?, aimed to promote the need to integrate transpersonal frameworks into mainstream mental health care. Katie was a founding director of the International Spiritual Emergence Network (ISEN) and advocates for viewing mental health crises as potential transformative opportunities if correctly supported. In 2017, following her personal brush with suicidality, Katie founded Emerging Proud, an international peer campaign highlighting stories of personal transformation through crisis. She joined the Board of the Soteria Network (UK) in 2024 who support the provision of alternative approaches to doula-ing people experiencing extreme states. Katie is an Associate Consultant and Trainer for a lived experience UK charity Imroc, and recently co-founded The ELEPHANT Collective project with Sameer Patel and co-produced the mini docu-series A Call to Awakening in 2021.  Sameer Patel Sameer is a filmmaker and the co-founder of the Kundalini Collective, an organisation established in 2018 to support individuals navigating spiritual awakenings. His own transformative ‘Kundalini awakening’ in 2006 profoundly reshaped his life, inspiring a deep exploration of spiritual and shamanic traditions across the globe. An Economics graduate from the London School of Economics, Sameer began his career in the City before transitioning into film finance. However, his spiritual journey catalysed a shift toward a creative path. As a filmmaker, his works have been acquired by Sony and Sky Arts and showcased at prestigious festivals such as Palm Springs. Recently, Sameer produced a British-Iranian feature adaptation of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant, reimagined as The Bitter Tears of Zahra Zand. He is now developing The Elephant, a documentary exploring ‘Non-Ordinary Transformative Experiences’ and their profound implications. Grief Tending, Shadow & Soul Work for Highly Sensitive People for Holistic Transformation with Jules De Vitto
2024/09/29
I'm excited to share S2, E11 of the Highly Sensitive Human Podcast. In this episode, I speak about a topic that is very close to my heart and something I feel very passionate about when it comes to being a Highly Sensitive Person, 'Grief Tending, Shadow & Soul Work for Highly Sensitive People for Holistic Transformation'. As HSP we are very attuned to their internal and external landscape and are more receptive to experiences of joy, awe, and beauty as well as despair, suffering and grief.  We’re strongly impacted by difficult circumstances, and we often carry grief related to what we needed and didn’t receive as children; the parts of ourselves that have been rejected and shamed; sorrow related to the suffering we see in the world including the loss and longing for deeper connection and community.  I share my perspective on grief tending, the importance of shadow work and connecting with our soul; how this often relates to our purpose as HSP.  Join the course: https://academy.highlysensitivehumans.com/courses/shadow-soul-grief-highly-sensitive-people.
