Up first, Jake introduces Kristy to the seedy underbelly of the 1990s New York crime scene, headed up by Christopher Walken and a murderer’s row of character actors in Abel Ferrara’s King of New York. We here at the Blindspots podcast would like to express that not every film we cover is a certified classic, nor does each film selected for discussion necessarily have to be one that either host holds any real fondness for. With that being said, for this month of November, we’re bringing another special themed month in the form of Thanksgiving movies! Up first, Kristy introduces Jake to Jodie Foster’s 1995 comfort food film about visiting your relatives at Home for the Holidays. Up first, Jake takes Kristy back to the eve of America’s bicentennial with Robert Altman's sprawling country music masterpiece, Nashville. Following that, Kristy and Jake buckle up for the ride of their lives in Martin Scorsese's haunting and criminally undervalued 1999 masterwork, Bringing Out the Dead. It's a hustle-and-bustle episode, full of star-studded casts, tricked-out tricycles, speeding ambulances, and more! Blindspots returns from a several-monthlong hiatus, and our hosts are bringing the laughs in the form of a largely defunct genre: the classic American studio comedy. Up first, Jake recommends Peter Bogdanovich’s 1972 romantic screwball masterpiece, What’s Up Doc? Then, Kristy brings Jonathan Lynn’s excellent 1993 courtroom comedy, My Cousin Vinny, to the table. On this episode of the podcast, Jake and Kristy revisit some of the more gruesome films that were a formative part of their childhood years. Up first is 1993’s Freaked, the twisted brainchild of Alex Winter that become a part of the regular viewing rotation in Kristy’s household. Then, it’s on to Jake’s recommendation with 1985’s Lifeforce, the Cannon Films-produced, Dan O’Bannon-penned, Tobe Hooper-directed intergalactic horror apocalypse. Not content with stopping there, the podcast hosts break format to gush over a film they love: Peter Jackson’s Dead Alive, the ultimate film in zombie horror-comedy carnage. Then, they take a trek on William Friedkin’s perilous journey through the jungle in 1977’s Sorcerer. Up first is Paula's pick, Hal Ashby’s 1973 film The Last Detail, an existentialist drama about two Naval officers escorting a third to prison. Then, they discuss Jerry's pick, Poetry, South Korean filmmaker Lee Chang-dong’s 2010 film about an elderly woman struggling to keep her life together. All of this excitement and more! Then, Kristy shares Jonathan Demme’s raw and emotionally loaded masterwork that is 2008’s Rachel Getting Married. Don your wingsuit, take flight, and enjoy.
