Michaela Pavlatova was born in Czech Republic, graduated from the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design in Prague. As an animation film director, her films have received numerous awards at international film festivals. For a few years from 1998, Pavlatova has divided her time between Prague and San Francisco, where she worked as the art director for Wildbrain inc. After 2002 she directed the live action film "Faithless Games". In 2006 she finished, together with her partner Vratislav Hlavaty, the animated film adaptation of Camille Saint Saens' "The Carnival of Animals". Two years later, she directed another live action feature film "Children of Night". Her short animation film "Tram" had a premiere at Cannes Film Festival and won the Cristal for a short film at Annecy Festival. Besides her work as a director, she made animations for theatre performances and is the supervisor of the Animation department at FAMU. "My Sunny Maad" is her first animated feature film. She adapted Petra Prochazkova's book "Freshta" to create a moving and subtle film about a Czec woman, Herra, who left her country to follow her futur-husband Nazir in Afghanistan. The Dutch director Michael Dudok De Wit accepted our invitation to discuss with Pavlatova about "My Sunny Maad", and to share their filmmakers' points of views. Referring to his own feature film "The Red turtle" they compare their experience, issues and excitements as directors. Nicolas Rolland est un animateur et réalisateur français. Diplômé de l’école Emile Cohl à Lyon, il poursuit ses études à l’école de La Poudrière pour se former à la réalisation de films d’animation. En résidence d’écriture co-organisée par La Poudrière, le CEEA et CICLIC, il présente l’idée originale de "L’Incendie" à son futur producteur Christophe Camoirano de Girelle productions et rencontre Pierre Le Gall, son co-scénariste. Il pitche ensuite ce projet de court métrage au Festival national du film d'animation à Rennes en 2019 où il remporte la bourse CICLIC. Entre les sessions d’écriture et de recherches graphiques, il travaille sur plusieurs projets, que ce soit pour "La Chambre vide" de Dahee Jeong, "La Nuit des sacs plastiques" de Gabriel Harel, ou encore "L’Extraordinaire Voyage de Marona" d’Anca Damian. Chenghua Yang est une réalisatrice de films d'animation chinoise, qui vit et travaille en France. Elle est diplômée de la "China Academy of Art" en 2011. Elle réalise en 2014 "Le Cancre", pour la toute première saison de la collection En Sortant de l'école, autour de Prévert. Elle reprend ses études à l'EMCA et réalise "3m33 before the end" pour conclure son parcours. Elle a depuis participé à plusieurs films d'animation entre l'Europe et l'Asie. En parallèle, elle dessine des bandes dessinées et travaille comme graphiste et illustratrice. Patrick Imbert est un animateur et réalisateur français. Il étudie l'animation à Gobelins, l'école de l'image. Il a collaboré à de nombreuses séries animées, notamment en tant que directeur de l'animation pour le long métrage "Avril et Le Monde Truqué" produit par Je Suis Bien Content, et "Ernest et Célestine" produit par Les Armateurs. En 2018, il coréalise avec Benjamin Renner "Le Grand Méchant Renard et autres contes", lauréat du César du Meilleur Film d'animation. Récemment, il a réalisé "Le Sommet des dieux", un long métrage produit par Folivari. Il a su s'emparer du manga, ou plutôt roman graphique, éponyme de Jirô Taniguchi pour en proposer une adaptation saisissante, tant au niveau graphique que dans sa mise en scène. Loris Giuseppe Nese is an Italian director, screenwriter, cinematographer, producer and animator. While learning art in school, he started to make comics by himself. Then, he studied art, music and entertainment in Bologna and later graduated in cinema, television and multimedia production in Naples. In parallel, he handled different roles for video-clips, short films, fiction and non-fiction feature films. In 2020, he directed the animated the short film "Bad Mood" which was selected and awarded several times. Loïc Espuche est un réalisateur français de films d'animation. Diplômé en communication visuelle, il se forme à l'animation et à la réalisation à l'EMCA puis à la Poudrière. Les films qu'il réalise durant ses études, tels que "Je repasserai dans la semaine"et "Tombés du Nid", réalisent de beaux parcours en festivals, sont plusieurs fois primés et lui valent une belle notoriété. Il participe en 2013 à la collection "En sortant de l'école" autour de Guillaume Apollinaire. Il travaille ensuite sur plusieurs longs métrages : "J'ai perdu mon corps", "L'Extraordinaire voyage de Marona" et "Le procès contre Mandela et les autres", ainsi que sur des séries en tant que storyboardeur. Il a réalisé les saisons 2 et 3 de "La Petite Mort", chez DoncVoilà productions et travaille aujourd'hui au développement de son prochain court métrage "Beurk" produit par Iliade & films et IKKI films. Ivana Bošnjak also known as Ivana Volda is a filmmaker who graduated from the Graphics Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. Her graduation film "Crossed Sild", was co-directed with Lea Vidakovic. She also studied animation at the University in Volda, Norway. Since 2010, she has been working on lots of stop motion projects as a model maker, animator and director. She works with her husband Thomas Johnson, and they lately directed the delicate and subtil "Imbued Life". Birute Sodeikaite asked for her news, so here is her message. Phuong Mai Nguyen étudie l'animation aux Gobelins, d'où elle sort diplômée en 2009 puis la réalisation à La Poudrière. Son premier court métrage "Chez Moi" est présélectionné pour les Césars et shortlisté pour les Oscars en 2016. Elle travaille ensuite comme autrice graphique sur le court-métrage "Celui qui a deux âmes" (de Fabrice Luang-Vija), qui reçoit la récompense du Meilleur Court-Métrage aux César 2017. Aux côtés de Charlotte Cambon, intervenue dans le podcast en octobre de l'année dernière, Mai réalise la série "Culottées". Produit par Silex Films, cette adaptation des bandes-dessinées de Pénélope Bagieu a été un véritable défi visuel et de mise en scène pour elles. Toujours avec Silex films, elle développe actuellement le projet de long-métrage In Waves, adapté du roman graphique d’Aj Dungo. Nous avons passé plusieurs moments ensemble au printemps dernier : d'abord pour le Festival national du film d'animation, où je l'avais invitée en tant que membre du jury, puis pour la Bourse Art Brutal, où nous avons pu échanger sur des projets prometteurs. Réka Bucsi is a Hungarian illustrator and filmmaker. After graduating from MOME in Budapest, her film "Symphony no. 42" received worldwide acclaim, and was shortlisted for numerous awards, including for an Oscar. In 2017, after a production made in record time in Viborg (Denmark), she revealed the experimental masterpiece "Solar Walk". Originally conceived for a 47-minute live concert by the Aarhus jazz orchestra, it was later adapted into a 20-minute film that won, among other prizes, the Audi Short Film Award at the Berlinale. It takes us on a journey through time and space alongside dreamlike characters. Her surreal style often draws upon nature and animals to deliver complex messages through distinct and delightful imagery.
