October 21 - Families With Pride In Houston
2026/10/21
Send us Fan Mail
A single phone call sparked a movement: a dad told his council member he wanted somewhere to celebrate Pride with his little boys. Not a late-night parade, not a heat-soaked street, just a place where kids could be kids and LGBTQ families could feel fully welcome. That request became Families With Pride, now a five-year, family-friendly Pride festival at Discovery Green in downtown Houston.
We talk with Harris County Attorney Abbie Kamin and Tammi Wallace, CEO of the Greater Houston LGBT Chamber of Commerce, about what it takes to build an inclusive community event at scale and why it matters right now. From the joy on children’s faces to the importance of families seeing others who look like them, they share what representation and safety look like on the ground in Harris County. We also dig into the current political climate in Texas, how LGBTQ people get used as a distraction in attack ads, and why local government and community partners choosing to show up loudly can change what families feel is possible.
You’ll also get the practical details: why the festival moved to October during LGBTQ+ History Month, how fall weather and Discovery Green’s seasonal setup make it easier for families, and what to expect onsite, including arts and crafts, face painting, live music, Pride story time, mini golf, balloon art, costumes with prizes, and community resources. The conversation connects that celebration to a larger fight for visibility, including the Pride Banner District in Montrose and the message behind public spaces that refuse erasure.
If you care about LGBTQ rights, family-friendly events, Houston community leadership, or how cities protect belonging, hit play. Subscribe, share this with a friend who should come along, and leave a review so more families can find it.
