Welcome to the 9th episode of Conversations with Gentle Warriors. In this episode, we hear from Umang Sheth, and we learn about his journey as a caregiver, her experience with a Caregiver Saathi. Umang Sheth runs an NGO known as The Hugging Club of India. He works towards removing stigma in society regarding mental health. He is the caregiver of his parents. His mother suffers from schizophrenia and his father suffers from bipolar disorder. Umang speaks about how his caregiving journey inspired him to start his NGO. Belonging to the LGBTQ+ community, he personally went through a difficult journey. Learning from these challenges, he now strives to help people who are going through similar situations. “I became a parent to my parents at a very early age, and it came naturally.” Umang explains how he wasn’t aware that he himself was a caregiver. He takes us through the daily tasks that he had to do in order to care for his parents. It also lead to many difficult situations because he found it difficult to care for his loved ones when they showed extreme behaviours due to their mental illnesses. It was also hard to take them to regular doctor visits and ensure that they took the right medications. Umang himself went through a lot of emotional and mental pressure. Welcome to the 7th Episode of Caregiver Diaries: Season 2! Here’s a story about an invisible warrior, whose entire family got infected with COVID-19. It revolves around the difficulties faced during the time of COVID-19, helplessness, and resilience in the face of a crisis. It serves as a reminder of how we are all caregivers at some point or the other.  “In the middle of the night, I traveled to Meerut and Manesar, hunted for oxygen cylinders, and was able to get 2 oxygen cylinders at an exorbitant price of Rs.60,000 each. On reaching home, I was shattered to find one of the cylinders empty.” “I promised myself to take as much responsibility as I can, just because I could. Welcome to the  6th Episode of Caregiver Diaries: Season 2!   Here is a story about an invisible warrior, who was a long distance caregiver to her father, who suffered from Parkinson’s for almost 26 years.. Just like any of us, she also goes through low points emotionally, where she feels sad and stressed and questions everything. She realizes that life does change drastically and you suddenly lose someone you treasured and turned to at every point in life, but understanding that accepting it and dealing with in the right way, makes it easier.   “It's a massive void because it's that one person who you thought you could share anything with, who you thought would never leave you and who was your support all your life, and suddenly you're left without that, it's like suddenly you wake up and feel like you can't breathe.”   Acceptance, understanding, and a whole lot of support from both sides of the family is what helps her through these tough times. Welcome to the 8th episode of Conversations with Gentle Warriors. In this episode, we hear from Sonia Suri, and we learn about her journey as a caregiver, her experience with a Caregiver Saathi. Sonia Suri, being the youngest child, was a caregiver to her dad suffering from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and was a companion (Saathi) to her husband who was also a caregiver to his parents.  She talks about the difficulty faced in a household where taking care of your ageing parents was considered the responsibility of children. Sonia also speaks about making tough decisions on the behalf of her family and about the responsibilities that came with caregiving. “Please reach out for help, don’t be embarrassed if you’re not able to do it and somebody else does it for you” She stresses on the importance of joining support groups as well as learning about the disease that your loved one is suffering from. Sonia also talks about all the life lessons she learned throughout her journey, and about how she aims to create more awareness of the disease suffered by her dad. She shares her personal experience with caregiving and talks about the need for caregivers to be able to share their stories. “When you share, you share your burdens, your emotions with others and it makes it better” She talks about society today and how it is important to normalise sharing experiences and stories related to caregiving. She speaks about caregiver exhaustion and compassion fatigue that caregivers experience, and about how it remains unnoticed and unacknowledged in our society today.  Smriti takes us through the struggles she faced, as her mother’s conditioned worsened, and as her journey became harder. She talks about the importance in sharing the workload and sharing responsibilities in a family while caregiving so that there is enough time to look after oneself. “Reaching out to people who can guide you through your emotions is a very good step, so take that, don’t be hesitant. Don’t be hesitant of loving yourself, taking some time off for yourself.” She mentions the ups and downs she faced in her caregiving journey and talks about how her journey has helped her become more empathetic and patient in the things that she does. She talks about the struggles she experienced due to covid and the support she received from those around her. Welcome to the 6th episode of Conversations with Gentle Warriors. In this episode we get to meet Shobit, who was a caregiver to his father suffering from stage 4 lung cancer. He shares his experience with us, and extends his hand to help support anyone going through the same thing as he did. He talks about the few initiatives there are in India to support caregivers, and about the neglected and unrecognised nature of caregiving. He expresses all the stages he went through since they found out about the diagnosis, and talks about the shock he faced, with the underlying feeling of hope for a better situation. He shares the struggles faced by his family, and especially his mother, while he saw his father fight the illness the best he could. “Caregiving fundamentally, though there is a primary caregiver, it is fundamentally, when it comes to a family, should be a shared responsibility.”  He talks about the importance of shared responsibility in a family, and about how him and his siblings had their mothers back, supported her, and helped out in different areas in which they were strong in.  “I think it’s important, for family, for caregivers to ensure that they stay strong, stay hopeful, and stay positive in this journey”  He refers to support and hope as something being necessary especially since illnesses such as these bring out situations filled with uncertainty. Sudeshna, an only child, was a caregiver to her aging parents for the span of about 6 years. She talks about her learning experience while observing her mother's role as a caregiver for her father. “What keeps me going is that if the roles were reversed, my parents would not even think twice about taking care of me” She speaks about the realistic, unexpected, and tough aspect of caregiving as she looked after both her parents, and the emotional toll that caregiving had on her. She speaks to us about how she manages parenting as well as caregiving. She tells us about the comfort and safety offered by her family, as they help her stay positive and motivated. She talks about her relationship with her husband and discusses her experience from when the diagnosis occurred until now. “You can never be ready for what happens, as you go along you just have to take care of it" Seema continuously encourages the need for positivity in tough situations and necessity for hopefulness while facing challenges.
