Climate Resilient Affordable Housing with Bijal Brahmbhatt | Understanding the Future | Season 3

Bijal Brahmbhatt is the Director of Mahila Housing Sewa Trust. In this episode, ‘Understanding the Future of Climate Resilient Affordable Housing’, with Bijal Brambhatt we discuss the effects of climate change on the urban poor, climate resilience, and its impact on their living standards. We start the discussion by understanding what urban poverty means, followed by the difference between urban poverty and rural poverty. We further discuss the rapid urbanization, job opportunities available for the poor, classification of labor, quality of life, and the reasons for migration to the urban area. Then our discourse moves towards the ground realities in the slums and settlements and pattern of migration and how they use their own network to find both housing and work opportunities. She also explains the unpaid and unnoticed efforts of women in supporting their families. Further, the discussion moves towards understanding the locations where the slums are situated and how incremental housing takes place. Then we discuss the problems faced due to climate change by the urban poor such as the heat island effect, disease outbreaks, and lack of sanitation and clean water. Lastly, we talk about affordable housing, issues of financing, loans, and lack of citizen engagement in urban areas. Kanak Tiwari and Nilesh Rajyadhaksha are the Project Coordinators of Master Plan Delhi, 2041 at NIUA. In this episode, 'Understanding the Future of Developing a Master Plan’, with Kanak Tiwari and Nilesh Rajyadhaksha, we explore and understand the process of developing a master plan for Delhi, 2041. In the first part of the episode, we start the conversation by understanding the definition of the master plan in context with Delhi’s master plan. This is followed by a discussion on the number of Indian cities which cater to such kind of planning along with the components and thoughts are taken into account while developing a master plan. We further discuss the vision for Delhi at a 20 years horizon as well as the agenda while developing the master plan 2041. Wilma Rodrigues is the Founder and CEO of Saahas Zero Waste. In this episode, 'Understanding the Future of Waste Management in Cities’, with Wilma Rodrigues, we explore the concept of waste management in terms of resource recovery in Indian cities. In this episode, we start the conversation by understanding the idea of waste management and its scenario in the urban sector in India. This is followed by a discussion on the functionality of resource recovery and the way it can lead to a zero waste ecosystem. In this episode, we start the conversation by understanding the meaning of urban water bodies and the various sources of freshwater in a city. This is followed by a discussion on Chennai’s zero-day problem and the approaches taken up to solve the same for the people of Chennai, including the promotion of rainwater harvesting techniques. We further discuss the concept of water body restoration, the process followed in restoring these water bodies, and the various projects associated with the same. He also explains the involvement of NGOs & other organizations in the process of water body restoration along with the operation & maintenance systems adopted once the water bodies are restored. Further, he gives his suggestions for cities which are facing similar issues w.r.t water body restoration and what could be the key point of action. At last, he helps us understand the skillsets required for restoring the water bodies as well as managing such a huge operation across the city.
